Now we have 4-month-old rats that are not diabetic, and they used to be diabetic," he added. Dr. Ehud Ur, a professor of medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and president of the clinical and scientific division of the Canadian Diabetes Association, said the study is still in its early stages. Like other experts, he is skeptical about a cure for type 1 diabetes, noting that the discoveries do not help people who already have type 1 diabetes. On Monday, Sara Danius, permanent secretary of the Nobel Prize Committee for Literature at the Swedish Academy, publicly announced during a radio show on Sveriges Radio in Sweden that the committee, after being unable to contact Bob Dylan directly regarding the award of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature, had given up trying to contact him. Danius said: "Right now we are not doing anything. I have called and e-mailed their closest colleague and received friendly replies. For now, that's enough." Previously, Ring CEO Jamie Siminoff said the company was founded after he couldn't hear his doorbell from his garage. He rigged up a wireless bell, he said. Siminoff said sales increased after a 2013 appearance on the show "Shark Tank" in which the startup was rejected by the show's investors. Siminoff was showcased on the shopping channel QVC in late 2017. Ring was also sued by competitor security company ADT Corporation. Although an experimental vaccine may be able to reduce the mortality of Ebola, as of now, there are no drugs that are clearly effective in treating the existing infection. An experimental antibody cocktail, ZMapp, initially showed some promise, but formal studies indicated that it provided less benefit than desired for preventing death. ZMapp was used as a control, meaning that scientists used it as a baseline and then compared it to the other three treatments in the PALM study. The U.S. gymnastics team supports the letter sent by the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee and agrees that the entire Olympic family must work together to ensure a safe environment for all athletes. We agree with the USOC statement that the best interests of our athletes, our clubs, and our sports would be served by moving forward with significant changes to our organization, rather than disbanding. The U.S. gymnastics team is supporting an independent investigation that will seek to understand how a reported abuse by former team doctor Larry Nassar went undetected for so long, and will advocate for any changes deemed necessary and appropriate. The U.S. gymnastics team and the U.S. Olympic Committee have the same goal - making gymnastics, and all sports, as safe as possible so athletes can pursue their dreams in a healthy, positive and respectful environment. During the 1960s, Brzezinski worked as an advisor to John F. Kennedy and then to Lyndon B. Johnson. U.S. President Donald Trump announced Sunday night that U.S. troops would withdraw from Syria. The advert came after a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Turkey would also take in members of the Islamic State group that European nations have refused to repatriate, the declaration said. This not only confirms that at least some dinosaurs had feathers, a theory which is already widely accepted, but also provides details which are not often seen in fossils, such as colour and three-dimensional structure. Scientists have said the animal's upper plumage was brown and the lower plumage was either pale or carotenoid. The discovery also provides new insights into the evolution of feathers in birds. Dinosaur feathers, or "raptor plumage", are not actually quill-like, but have other features like hooks and barbs. Therefore, researchers have suggested that the raptor plumage was possibly the result of further evolutionary development following the appearance of hooks and barbs. The structure of the feathers suggests that they were not used in flight, but instead used in display or to regulate temperature. Researchers suggested that even though this is the tail of a young dinosaur, the sample was from an adult's plumage, not a juvenile's. The researchers suggested that even though the tail belongs to a young dinosaur, the sample reveals adult plumage, not juvenile feathers. A car bomb exploded at a police headquarters in Gaziantep in Turkey yesterday morning, killing at least two policemen and injuring more than twenty others. The governor's office said 19 of the injured were police officers. Police said they suspected a member of the Daesh (ISIS) militant group was responsible for the attack. They discovered that the Sun had the same basic principles as other stars: all stars in a system are determined by their brightness, rotation, and nothing else. Luminosity and rotation are used together to define the Rossby number of a star, which is a measure of the flow of plasma. The lower the Rossby number, the less active the star is in terms of magnetic reversals. Throughout his journey, Iwasaki faced many problems. He has been robbed by pirates, bitten by a rabid dog in Tibet, nearly married in Nepal, and arrested in India. 802.11n works in both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. This will make it compatible with 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g, so long as the base station has dual-radio. 802.11n is significantly faster than its predecessors, theoretically capable of 600 Mb/s. Duvall, who is married with two adult children, made no impression on Miller, who told the story. When asked for a comment, Miller said, "Mike was talking a lot during the hearing, I was getting ready to go, so I wasn't paying attention to what he was saying." Hu said China would try to reduce carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by 40 to 45 percent by 2020, compared with 2005 levels. He did not put a figure on the proposed cuts, saying they would be based on China's economic output. Hu called on developing countries to "avoid the old path of damage first and pay later." He added that "they must not, however, be asked to take on responsibilities which are beyond their stage of development, maturity and ability." The Iraqi Study Group will release its report today at noon GMT. He warns that there are no guarantees that anything the U.S. does in Iraq now will prevent a sectarian war, an increase in violence or a slide toward chaos. The report opens with a call for an open debate and a national consensus on U.S. Middle East policy. The report is highly critical of nearly all aspects of current government policy on Iraq and calls for an immediate change of direction. The first of the 78 recommendations is that a new diplomatic initiative should be taken by the end of this year to protect Iraq's borders from hostile intervention, and to rebuild relations with neighboring countries. Argentina's current Senator and First Lady, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, announced her candidacy for the presidency yesterday afternoon in La Plata, a city 50 kilometres (31 miles) from Buenos Aires. Ms. Kirchner announced her intention to run for president at the Teatro Argentina, the same venue where she launched her campaign for the Senate in 2005 as a member of the Buenos Aires provincial delegation. The debate began with a controversy over disaster relief and reconstruction spending in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which some conservative fiscal hawks jokingly dubbed the "Bush Plan for New Orleans." Liberal criticism of the reconstruction effort has focused on the awarding of reconstruction contracts to Washington influence peddlers. More than 4 million people came to Rome to attend the funeral. So many people came to pay their respects that not everyone was able to fit into St. Peter's Square for the funeral. Televisions were set up around Rome so that people could watch the ceremony. Similar arrangements were made in many other Italian and foreign cities, especially in Poland, which allowed many people to follow it. Historians criticized former FBI officials for directing resources to "easy solve" cases, especially those involving stolen cars, in order to increase the popularity of the agency. Congress began funding the obscenity initiative in fiscal year 2005, and specified that the FBI should dedicate 10 agents to adult pornography. Robin Uthappa led the innings with the highest score of 70 runs off 41 balls with 11 fours and 2 sixes. Middle-order batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid made a half-century stand. Bush arrived in Singapore at dawn on November 16, beginning a weeklong trip to Asia. He was welcomed by Singapore's deputy prime minister, Wong Kan Seng, and discussed trade and terrorism with Singapore's prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong. Following a week of defeat in the midterm elections, Bush spoke publicly about expanding trade in Asia. Prime Minister Stephen Harper agreed to send the government's "Clean Air Act" to a Commons committee for review, before second reading, following a 25-minute meeting with NDP Leader Jack Layton at the PMO on Tuesday. Layton has called on the prime minister to overhaul the Conservative environmental bill during a meeting with the prime minister, calling for a "full and careful re-write" of the Conservative environmental bill. Since the federal government stepped in to take over the funding of the Mersey Hospital in Devonport, Tasmania, the state government and some federal members have been critical of the move, calling it a stunt ahead of the November federal election. But Prime Minister John Howard said the act was only to protect the hospital's status from being downgraded by the Tasmanian government, which had offered a further A$45 million. Tsunami waves have been reported following the earthquake, according to the latest bulletin. Tsunami waves have been observed near Pago Pago and Niue. No major damage or injuries were reported in Tonga, but the island briefly lost power, preventing a tsunami warning from being broadcast by the PTWC. Fourteen schools in Hawaii that are either on the coastline or inland were closed for the entire day Wednesday, even though tsunami warnings had been canceled. U.S. President George W. Bush welcomed the news. Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for Mr. Bush, called the North Korean pledge "an important step toward achieving the goal of the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula." Tenth named Atlantic hurricane of the season, Tropical Storm Jerry, has formed in the Atlantic Ocean today. As of now, Jerry is not threatening any land, the National Hurricane Center said. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers estimated that 6 inches of additional rainfall could cause levees to break that were already damaged. Ala Nine, which saw flooding up to six feet deep during Hurricane Katrina, is currently at flood stage, as the nearest levee has been overtopped. Water is overflowing on a 100-foot section of the dike. Commons administrator Adam Cuerden expressed his disappointment with the exclusions when speaking to Wikinews last month. He [Wales] has been lying through his teeth from the start. First he pretended it was for legal reasons, then he pretended he'd been listening for years, and then he pretended he didn't know about the article removals. The community's irritation has led to the present-day efforts to create a policy regarding sexual content on the website which hosts millions of open-license media files. Most of the work was theoretical, but the program was designed to observe the Sagittarius Galaxy. The effect the team wanted to see was caused by the dark matter between the galaxies and the Milky Way. As the Moon pulls on the Earth, causing tides, the Milky Way also exerts a force on the Sagittarius galaxy. Scientists have concluded that dark matter interacts with other dark matter in the same way as normal matter. This theory suggests that most of the dark matter surrounding a galaxy is located in a disk around the galaxy in a sort of halo, and is composed of many tiny particles. TV footage showed a white plume of smoke billowing from the plant. Officials are urging area residents downwind of the power plant to remain indoors, close their air conditioners, and not to drink tap water. Japan's nuclear agency says radioactive iodine and calcium have been found at the plant. Authorities believe the containers may have been damaged, leaking uranium fuel into the ground. Dr. Tony Moll discovered extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis, or XDR-TB, in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. He said the new variant was "really bad and scary because it has such a high mortality rate," in an interview. Dr. Moll said some patients may have contracted the virus at the hospital, and at least two were health-care workers. In a one-year period, an infected person can infect between 10 and 15 close contacts. However, the percentage of XDR-TB in the total population of people with tuberculosis still appears to be low; 6,000 out of 330,000 people with tuberculosis in South Africa at any given time. Both satellites, each about 1,000 pounds (450 kg) and traveling at about 17,500 miles per hour, collided at an altitude of 491 miles. Scientists said the explosion from the collision was intense. They are still trying to figure out the size of the crash and how the earth will be affected. U.S. Strategic Command, a department of the Defense, is surveying the wreckage. The results of the analysis of the graph will be available on the public website. A pediatrician who worked at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania is expected to be charged with murder after her mother was found dead in the trunk of her car on Wednesday, authorities in Ohio said. Dr. Malar Balasubramanian, 29, was found unconscious on the side of a road in Blue Ash, Ohio, about 15 miles north of Cincinnati, wearing only a shirt and underwear and apparently under the influence of a powerful sedative. She led police to her black Oldsmobile Intrigue, parked about a quarter-mile away. Inside, they found the body of 53-year-old Saroja Balasubramanian covered in blood. Police said the man had been dead for a day. The first cases of the illness this season were reported in late July. The disease is transmitted by pigs and then passed to humans through mosquito bites. The outbreak has prompted the Indian government to take certain steps such as distributing thousands of mosquito nets and setting up pig farms in the affected areas, and spraying pesticides. Millions of doses of vaccine against encephalitis have also been promised by the government, which will help health agencies prepare for the next year. Plans for vaccines targeted at the areas most affected this year have been set back by funding shortfalls and low priority compared to other diseases. In 1956, Słania moved to Sweden, where he began working for the Swedish Postal Service after three years and became its chief recorder. He has produced more than 1,000 stamps for Sweden and another 28 countries. His work is so well known and of such high quality and detail that he is a rare celebrity among stamp collectors, and some collect only his work. His 1,000th stamp was the beautiful "Great Achievements of the Swedish Kings" by David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl in 2000, which is listed in the Guinness Book of Records. He has also designed banknotes for many foreign countries, and recent examples of his work include the portraits of the prime ministers on the new Canadian $5 and $100 notes. Gibson was taken to a hospital, where he later died. The lorry driver, 64, was unhurt in the accident. The vehicle involved in the accident was removed from the scene at about 12:00 GMT on the same day. Children were waiting to cross the road and were screaming and crying, a witness who works in a nearby garage said. They all raced back to the scene of the accident. Other issues on the agenda for Bali include saving the world's remaining forests and sharing technology to help developing nations grow in ways that are less polluting. The UN is also hoping to set up a fund to help developing countries cope with the impacts of global warming. The money could go toward flood-proofing homes, better water management and diversifying crops. Ms. Fluke wrote that efforts by some to prevent women from speaking about their health were unsuccessful. She came to this conclusion after receiving an overwhelming amount of positive comments and encouragement from both men and women urging her to make birth control medication a medical necessity. When the fighting stopped, after the casualties had been taken to hospital, about 40 of the remaining inmates remained in the yard, refusing to return to their cells. Traders tried to reverse the situation, but the demands of the inmates were not clear. Between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. (MDT), inmates set a fire inside the prison. Police in riot gear then entered the courtyard and fired tear gas at the inmates. Firefighters brought the blaze under control at 11:35 p.m. After the dam was built in 1963, the annual flooding that spread sediment throughout the river was stopped. This sediment is essential to create sandbanks and beaches, which provide habitat for wildlife. As a result, two fish species have become extinct and another two are now endangered, such as the Gila cypha. Although the water level will rise only by a few metres in the days following the flood, officials expect it will be high enough to rescue the eroding sand banks. No tsunami warning has been issued and the geophysics agency in Jakarta says there is no need for one since the quake's magnitude was below 6.5. With no tsunami threat, residents began panicking and fleeing their homes and businesses. Although Winfrey wept as she signed off, she made sure to tell viewers that she would be back. This is not a goodbye, this is the closing of a chapter and the opening of another." Final results of Namibia's presidential and parliamentary elections showed President Hifikepunye Pohamba easily re-elected. The ruling South West African People's Organization (SWAPO) also won a majority in parliamentary elections. Coalition and Afghan forces were heading to the scene to protect it, and other coalition aircraft were being sent in to help. The accident occurred at a high altitude in mountainous terrain and is believed to have been caused by enemy fire. Search and rescue efforts have been hampered by bad weather and rugged terrain. Medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) said it was the worst outbreak recorded in the country. MSF said in a statement, "Angola is on track for its worst outbreak ever, and the situation remains very bad in the country." The games started at 10am under sunny skies, and despite some early morning rain, it was a perfect day for some sevens rugby. Tournament favorites South Africa got off to a flying start, cruising to a comfortable 26-0 win over fifth-ranked Zambia. Looking decidedly rickety against their southern neighbours, South Africa, however, improved as the tournament progressed. Their disciplined defense, ball control, and teamwork were outstanding, and it was clear that this was a team that could not be beaten. Officials from the city of Amsterdam and the Anne Frank Museum said the tree was infected with a fungus and posed a public health risk, arguing that it was about to collapse. The hearing was scheduled for Tuesday, but was put on hold after an emergency court hearing. All of the cave entrances, collectively known as the "Seven Sisters", are at least 100 to 250 metres (328 to 820 feet) wide. Infrared images show that the temperature variations from night to day are similar to those in caves. They are colder than the surrounding surface during the day, and warmer at night. Their thermal behavior isn't as stable as those of the large caves on Earth, which often have a fairly constant temperature, but it is consistent with them being deep holes in the ground," said Glen Cushing, of the U.S. Geological Survey's Astrogeology Team and Northern Arizona University, in Flagstaff, Arizona. Traditionally, voting in France has been a low-tech affair: Voters go into a booth, fill out a printed ballot, and place it in an envelope. After officials verified the voter's identity, the voter would place the ballot in the box and sign the poll book. French electoral law is codified in a very detailed way. Since 1988, all ballot boxes have been transparent, so that voters and observers can see that there are no envelopes in the ballot box at the start of voting, and that no additional envelopes are added except those of voters who have been properly registered and authorized. Candidates can send representatives to observe all aspects of the process. Votes are counted by volunteers overnight, under careful supervision, using specific procedures. ASUS Eee PC, launched worldwide recently with upgraded functions and aimed at cost savings, has become a hot topic at the 2007 Taipei ICT Month. But the consumer laptop market would be radically changed and transformed after Asus won the Taiwan Sustainable Award in 2007 under the leadership of Chairman Yuan of the Republic of China. The station's website describes the show as "an old-school radio play with a healthy dose of geekiness and newbies!" In its early days, the show was only available on the long-running TogiNet Radio website, which focused on audio broadcasting. In late 2015, Toginet established AstroNet Radio as a sister station. The previous show featured amateur voice actors from East Texas. Scattered clashes were said to have continued through the night, with police nowhere to be seen in the streets of Bishkek. Bisqueque City was described as being in a state of "anarchy" by one observer, with looters roaming the streets and smashing up shops selling consumer goods. Residents of Bishkek blamed the protesters from the south for the illegalities. Accordingly, the actors on stage are smoking marijuana, and the theater is encouraging the audience to join them. Former U.S. Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann placed fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. After the results came in, Gingrich praised Santorum but took aim at Romney, whose campaign had run negative ads in Iowa against Gingrich. Perry said he would "go back to Texas and look at the results from tonight's party convention and see if there is a path forward for me in this race," but later said he would stay in the race and participate in the Jan. 21 South Carolina primary. Bachmann, who won the Ames Straw Poll in August, decided to end her campaign. The photographer was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he later died. He was in his twenties, according to reports. In a statement, Bieber said: "While my heart breaks for the loss of someone's life, my prayers go out to the family of the victim." According to celebrity news website TMZ, the photographer parked his car on the opposite side of Sepulveda Boulevard and tried to take photos of the traffic stop before crossing the street and continuing on, prompting the California Highway Patrol officer directing traffic to twice order him to return to his car. It is unlikely that the driver of the vehicle that struck the photographer will be charged criminally, police said. UN peacekeepers who have been stationed in Haiti since the devastating 2010 earthquake are being blamed for sparking the outbreak, which started near their camp. According to the suit, UN camp waste was not properly treated, leading to bacterial contamination in the Artibonite River, one of Haiti's largest. Before the troops arrived, Haiti had not had a case of yellow fever since 1800. The Haitian Institute of Justice and Democracy cited independent studies that suggested that the UN peacekeeping mission in Nepal, which was unaware, had brought the disease to Haiti. U.N. disease expert Danielle Lantagne said the outbreak was likely caused by U.N. peacekeepers. Hamilton confirmed that Howard University Hospital had listed the man's condition as stable. The patient had been in Nigeria, where an outbreak of Ebola virus occurred. Both uric acid and melanin were found in urine samples from pet animals that had died after eating the contaminated food. The two compounds react to each other to form crystals that can block kidney function, researchers at the university said. Researchers found that when they added melanin and uric acid to cat urine, crystals formed. The composition of those crystals is identical to the compound found in the urine of pet animals hit by lightning, when the two compositions are compared using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. I don't know if you saw this or not, but a large amount of goods from Central America came into the country without paying taxes. Still, eighty percent of our products were taxed in Central American countries. We treat you. That made no sense to me, and it was certainly not fair. I tell people, look, if you're going to criticize us, then criticize us for what we do, not for who we are. She is in custody awaiting indictment and trial, but any potential eyewitnesses may be compromised since her image has been widely disseminated. This is standard practice elsewhere in the UK, but Scotland's justice system is different and the courts consider the publication of photographs to be potentially prejudicial. Prof Pamela Ferguson, of the University of Dundee, said: "Journalists appear to be heading into dangerous territory when they publish photographs, videos and so on of suspects. The Crown Office, which is responsible for prosecutions, has told reporters there will be no further comment - at least until charges are laid. According to the leak, the document will be about the border dispute, which the Palestinians want based on the pre-1967 Six-Day War borders. Other issues include the future of Jerusalem, which is holy to both sides, and the issue of the Jordan Valley. Israel is demanding a continuous military presence in the valley for as long as a decade after a deal is signed, while the AP would agree to a five-year arrangement. Test shooters in the follow-up pest control audit were closely supervised by forest engineers while the test was monitored and its effectiveness was assessed. A partnership between the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc saw qualified volunteers recruited under the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. Mick O'Flynn, NPWS Interim Conservation and Estates Director, said the four volunteer shooters selected for the first operation had been given extensive safety and training briefings. Yesterday, Martelly promised a new nine-member Provisional Electoral Council (CEP). It is President Martelly's fifth CEP in four years. Last month, a presidential commission recommended the CEP's resignation as part of a package of measures to pave the way to new elections. The commission was formed in response to widespread protests against the government that began in October. Occasional violent protests have been sparked by the failure to hold elections that were originally scheduled for 2011. About 60 cases of overheating iPods have been reported, causing six fires and leaving four people with minor burns. Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) said it was aware of 27 device-related accidents. Last week, METI released that Apple had reported 34 more instances of overheating, which the company classified as "non-serious." The ministry responded by calling the Apple report "truly lamentable." The quake hit Mariana at 07:19 am local time (2119 GMT Friday). The Northern Mariana Islands Office of Emergency Management said there were no reports of damage in the islands. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also said there was no tsunami threat. A former Filipino policeman has hijacked a tourist bus in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, and taken hostages in Hong Kong. Rolando Mendoza fired his M16 rifle at the tourists. A number of hostages have been freed, and at least six have been confirmed dead. Six hostages, including children and elderly people, were released earlier, as well as Filipino photojournalists. Then photographers took the woman's place, and Mendoza was shot. Liggins followed his father's footsteps and pursued a career in medicine. He trained as an obstetrician and began work at the National Women's Hospital in Auckland in 1959. Although he was working in the hospital, Liggins began researching preterm births in his spare time. His research showed that if a hormone was administered, it would hasten fetal lung maturation in the baby. On Wednesday, government investigators recovered two "black boxes," or flight data recorders, Xinhua reported. Other fighters also paid tribute to Luna. Tommy Dreamer said, "Luna was the first Queen of Extreme. My first promoter. Luna died on a night with two full moons. Something special, just like her, a strong woman." Dustin Runnels (Goldust) said, "Luna was as crazy as I am, or maybe even crazier... I loved her and will miss her, I'm sure she's in a better place." Of the 1400 people surveyed ahead of the 2010 federal election, the number who were against changing Australia's status to a republic had risen by eight per cent since 2008. Former Prime Minister Julia Gillard said during the 2010 national election campaign that she believed Australia would become a republic at the end of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. Thirty-four per cent of those surveyed wanted Queen Elizabeth II to be the last Australian monarch. At the extremes of the spectrum, 29 per cent of respondents believed Australia should become a republic as soon as possible, while 31 per cent believed Australia should never become a republic. The Olympic gold medallist is set to compete in the 100m and 200m freestyle and three relay events at the Commonwealth Games but his participation has been thrown into doubt by the complaints. He was unable to take painkillers, which are banned at the Games. Mathematician and computer science professor Curtis Cooper at the University of Central Missouri discovered the largest known prime number as of January 25. The findings were verified by multiple people using a variety of hardware and software, and announced on Tuesday. Comets may have brought water to Earth, along with the organic material that gave rise to proteins and made life possible. Scientists want to know how planets form, especially how Earth formed, since comets have been hitting Earth for a long time. Cuomo, 53, took office earlier this year and signed a law last month making New York the 14th U.S. state to legalize same-sex marriage. He called the reports "politics and nonsense" He is expected to run for president in 2016. The NextGen is a system that the FAA says will allow planes to fly more efficient routes, save millions of gallons of fuel every year, and reduce carbon emissions. It replaces older radar-based technology with satellite-based technology, and allows air traffic controllers to pinpoint planes more accurately and provide more accurate information to pilots. There will be no extra transport and the surface trains will not call at Wembley. Parking and connections to public transport will not be available. Transport issues have heightened the possibility of the game being played behind closed doors, without supporters. On Wednesday, the journal Science published a study reporting the discovery of a new bird species in the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador. Researchers from Princeton University in the US and the University of Uppsala in Sweden reported that the new species evolved in only two generations, although it was previously thought to take much longer due to breeding between a native Darwin's finch, Geospiza fortis, and an immigrant cactus finch, Geospiza conirostris. Gold can be hammered into any shape. It can even be rolled into small balls. It can be stretched into a thin wire and twisted or braided. It can be hammered flat or rolled into leaves. It can be very thin and laid over another metal. Because of its thinness, it was sometimes used as a decoration for hand-painted books called "illuminated manuscripts". This is called chemical potential. You can make a red cabbage indicator. The juice from red cabbage depends on whether the chemical is acidic or basic (alkaline). pH is a measure of the amount of hydrogen ions (H+) in a particular chemical. Hydrogen ions are protons that have had their electrons removed (because hydrogen atoms consist of a proton and an electron). Mix the two doughs together, using your clean hands to form a ball. The moisture in your hands interacts with the outer layers, causing a weird sensation and forming a sort of shell. The cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-daro had a sophisticated sanitation system with sewers in most houses connected to a network of drains. Remnants of sewage systems have been found in the ancient Minoan cities of Crete and Santorini in Greece. Ancient Egypt, Persia, and China also had toilets. In ancient Rome, public toilets were often connected to public baths, which were open to both men and women. When you talk to someone who is far away from you, you are using a satellite. The satellite in space receives the call and then relays it back to Earth, almost instantly. The satellite was sent into space on a rocket. Scientists use telescopes in space because the Earth's atmosphere blocks some of the light and makes it hard to see. A giant rocket over 30 meters tall is needed to launch a satellite or a telescope. The wheel is an amazing invention that has changed the world in so many ways. The most important thing the wheel gave us was a much easier and faster way to move from one place to another. It gave us the train, the car, and many other forms of transportation. Below these are the medium-sized cats, which hunt medium-sized prey, from rabbits to deer and antelopes. Finally, many small cats, including free-living pet cats, eat many more small animals, such as bugs, rodents, lizards, and birds. The key to their success is the concept of the niche, a specialized function that each cat performs that keeps them from competing with each other. Lions are the most sociable of the cat family, living in large groups called prides. Prides consist of one to three adult male lions, about a dozen adult females, and as many as thirty cubs and young females. Women are often very close to each other, being an extended family of sisters and mothers. A pride of lions behaves much like a pack of wolves or dogs, and are surprisingly similar to lions in behavior but not to other big cats. They are also very deadly to their prey. A well-balanced athlete, the tiger can climb (although not well), swim, jump great distances, and pull with five times the strength of an average human. The tiger is a member of the same genus (Panthera) as the lion, leopard and jaguar. These four big cats are the only ones that roar. The tiger's roar is not like the roar of a lion, but more like a sentence of words roared and growled. Jaguars like to eat small animals. They hunt monkeys, snakes, rodents, and birds. Most of the animals that the jaguar eats are much smaller than the jaguar. Scientists believe jaguars track their prey by following its scent on the ground. They have excellent night vision and can see well in the dark. They are also very stealthy and able to stalk their prey. Jaguars hunt their prey by stalking and ambushing. When a small group of living things (a small population) separates from the main population from which they came (perhaps by crossing a mountain range or a river, or by going to an island from which they can't easily return), they often find themselves in a different environment from the one they were in before. This new environment has different resources and new competitors, so the new population will need to have different characteristics than the original one and adapt to become a strong competitor. The original population has not changed, they still need those same adaptations. Over time, as the new population begins to adapt to its new environment, it becomes less and less like the original population. Eventually, after thousands or even millions of years, the two populations might become so different that they can no longer be called the same species. We call this process speciation, which is simply the formation of new species. Speciation is an inevitable and important part of the evolutionary process. Plants produce the oxygen we breathe and take in carbon dioxide we exhale (breathe out) Plants make their own food using photosynthesis. They also give off shade. We build our houses from plants, we make our clothes from plants, most of the food we eat is from plants. Without plants, animals would not be able to survive. The Mosasaurus was the top predator of its time, so the only thing it was afraid of was another Mosasaurus. Its long jaws held up to 70 sharp teeth, and a second set of teeth was located in the roof of its mouth, so that nothing it caught could escape. We don't know for sure, but it may have had a double tongue. Its diet included sea turtles, sharks, other mosasaurs, and possibly even cannibalism. He also attacked anything that came into the water; even a giant like a Tyrannosaurus rex would have been no match for him. While most of their food was familiar to a Roman, they still had their fair share of strange or exotic foods, such as boar, turkey, snails, and a type of rodent called an arganaz. Another difference was that while the poor and women ate while sitting on chairs, the wealthy men would hold banquets where they would lie on their sides while eating. Ancient Rome was not a supplier of food to Europe from the Americas and Asia, as it would be in later centuries. For example, they did not have wheat, tomatoes, potatoes, or chocolate, and no ancient Roman ever tasted a Peruvian. The Babylonians made a main temple for each of their gods, which were considered to be the house of the respective deity. People made sacrifices to the gods, and priests performed rituals to appease the gods. Each temple had an open courtyard and an inner sanctuary where only the priests were allowed. Sometimes special pyramids shaped like a tower, called ziggurats, were built as part of a temple. The top of the tower was a special sanctuary for the god. In the hot climate of the Middle East, houses were not important. Most Jewish family life was outdoors. Women cooked in the courtyard, and shops were no more than open booths facing the street. Stone was used in the construction of houses. There were no great forests in Canaan, so timber was very costly. Greenland has been sparsely populated from the beginning. According to Norse sagas, Erik the Red was exiled from Iceland for murder and went west, where he discovered Greenland and named it. But regardless of his discovery, Native American tribes had already been living there for some time. Although all the countries were "Scandinavian", there were great differences between the peoples, kings, customs, and history of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland. If you've seen the movie The Legend of the Lost Treasure, you may notice a treasure map on the back of the Declaration of Independence. However, this is not true. Although there is something written on the reverse side of the document, it is not a treasure map. The words "Original Declaration of Independence, Dated July 4, 1776" are written on the bottom of the document, upside down. Although no one knows for sure who created the large parchment document - measuring 29 3/8 by 24 1/2 inches - it was originally rolled up for storage. Thus, a note may simply have been added as a tag. The landings and subsequent battles on D-Day freed northern France, but southern France was still under German occupation. It was under French "Vichy" control. These were the French who made a deal with the Germans in 1940 and worked with the invaders rather than fighting them. On August 15, 1940, the Allies invaded southern France and code named the operation "Dragoon". In just two weeks, American and Free French forces had liberated southern France and were advancing into Germany. A civilization is a unique culture shared by a large number of people living and working together in a cooperative society. The word civilization is derived from the Latin word civilis, meaning civil, related to the Latin civis, meaning citizen, and civitas, meaning city or city-state, and also in some way defining the size of a society. Cities are the precursors of nations. Culture of a civilization involves the passing of knowledge from one generation to another, a long-standing cultural tradition, and a just distribution. Smaller cultures often leave no historical record and are not recognized as civilizations. During the Revolutionary War, the Thirteen Colonies first formed a weak central government - consisting of a single body, Congress - under the Articles of Confederation. Without the power to tax, the Congress had to rely on the states for revenue, and as there was neither a national executive nor judiciary, the states generally did not cooperate in carrying out the federal laws. Also, there was no authority to revoke state taxes and tariffs. Articles required the unanimous consent of the states in order to be amended, and the states gave so little regard to the central government that their representatives were seldom present. The Italian national football team, together with the German national football team, is the second most successful in the world, and was the FIFA World Cup champion in 2006. Popular sports include football, basketball, volleyball, water polo, fencing, rugby, cycling, ice hockey, roller hockey, and Formula 1 racing. Winter sports are more popular in the northern regions, with the Italians competing in international games and Olympic events. Japan has approximately 7,000 islands (the largest of which is Honshu), and is the world's seventh-largest island. Because of Japan's numerous islands, Japan is often geographically referred to as an "archipelago" Taiwan's history dates back to the 1500s, when Europeans sailing past the island called it Ilha Formosa, which means Beautiful Island. In 1624, the Dutch East India Company established a base in the southwest of Taiwan, and introduced new practices in grain production for the aboriginal peoples, and employed Chinese to work on their rice and sugar cane plantations. In 1683, the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912) gained control of Taiwan's western and northern coastal areas and made Taiwan a province of the Qing Empire in 1885. In 1895, after its defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–95), the Qing government signed the Shimonoseki Treaty, ceding sovereignty over Taiwan to Japan, which governed the island until 1945. Machu Picchu has three main structures, the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun and the Temple of the Three Windows. Most of the buildings on the outside of the complex have been reconstructed to give visitors a sense of what they looked like originally. In 1976, thirty percent of Machu Picchu was recovered, and this recovery continues to this day. 35 mm film was the most common film size in the world, and it was the standard film size at the end of the era of analogue photography. It is still made today, but more importantly, its aspect ratio is the standard for digital camera sensors. 35 mm film is actually 36 by 24 mm. The aspect ratio of this type of screen (divided by twelve for the lowest common integer ratio) is therefore 3:2. Many common formats (e.g. APS family of formats) are the same or very close to this ratio. The often abused and frequently demoralized thirds law is a simple guideline that provides a dynamic while maintaining a reasonable amount of order in a figure. He believes the intersection of the lines that divide the image into thirds horizontally and vertically (see example) is the most effective place for the main subject. During this period in European history, the Roman Catholic Church, which had become rich and powerful, was under scrutiny. For more than a thousand years, Christianity has united the European states, despite the differences in language and customs. They were all affected by his influence, from the king to the plebeian. One of the most important Christian principles is that wealth is to be used to relieve suffering and poverty, and church funds are provided for that purpose. The central leadership of the church had been based in Rome for more than a thousand years, and the concentration of power and wealth in Rome led to questions about whether this principle was being upheld. Within days of the outbreak of hostilities, Britain began to enforce a naval blockade of Germany. The strategy also succeeded in cutting off vital supplies to both military and civilian populations, albeit at the cost of violating international laws generally accepted and enshrined in several international agreements over the past two centuries. Britain has declared a number of international waters to be a no-go area for any ship, friend or foe, and even neutral vessels have been ordered to stay away. Germany, having got a limited reply to its unrestricted submarine warfare, expected a similar response to its unrestricted aerial warfare. During the 1920s, most people and nations were pacifist and isolationist. After witnessing the horrors and atrocities of World War I, all nations wanted to avoid this from happening again in the future. In 1884, Tesla moved to the United States to take a job at the Edison Company in New York City. He came to the United States with no money, a book of poetry, and a letter of recommendation from his former boss, Charles Batchelor, to Thomas Edison. The ancient Chinese had a unique way of distinguishing different periods; each major phase of Chinese history or any particular dynasty was given a distinct name. Additionally, between each dynasty was a period of disunity among the provinces. The most well-known of these periods is the Three Kingdoms Era, which lasted for 60 years between the Han and Jin dynasties. During these periods, there was a vicious war of succession going on between many of the noble families for the throne. The Three Kingdoms is one of the bloodiest periods in Chinese history, with thousands of people dying in battles to claim the throne in the large palace of Xi'an. There are many social and political effects, such as the use of the metric system, the change from absolute to republicanism, nationalism and the belief that the country belongs to the people, not one ruler. Furthermore, after the Revolution, all positions were opened to men, allowing the most ambitious and successful to prosper. This was also true of military rank, which was no longer based on social class, but on character. The French Revolution also inspired many other peasants in other countries to start their own revolutions. Muhammad was deeply interested in matters beyond worldly concerns. He used to frequent a cave called "Hira" on the mountain of "Noor" (light) for meditation. The very cave in which Muhammad is said to have meditated gives a vivid picture of the religious inclinations of Muhammad. Tucked high in the mountains north of Mecca, the cave is completely isolated from the rest of the world. In fact, it's not an easy thing to find, even if you know it exists. Once inside the cave, it is a complete isolation. There is nothing to see here but the clear blue sky above and the surrounding mountains. Very little of the outside world can be seen or heard from inside the cave. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the World that still exists today. Built in the 3rd century BCE by the Egyptians, the Great Pyramid is one of several great pyramids built to honor dead pharaohs. The Giza Plateau, or the "Necropolis of Giza", is the site of several pyramids (including the Great Pyramid, which is the largest), some small tombs, several temples, and the Great Sphinx. The Great Pyramid was built for Pharaoh Khufu, and many of the smaller pyramids, tombs, and temples were built for Khufu's wives and family members. The "triangle up" mark resembles a V, while the "triangle down" mark resembles either a diamond or a square with a bottom. Top hand means to start from the top and pull the bow; bottom hand means to start from the bottom and push the bow. A bow up produces a soft sound, while a bow down produces a louder, more assertive sound. You can work out your own notes, but remember the printed notes are there for a musical reason, so ignore them at your peril. On October 6, 1789, King Louis XVI, Queen Marie Antoinette, their two young children (eleven-year-old Marie-Thérèse and four-year-old Louis-Charles) and King Louis's sister, Madame Elizabeth, were forced to return to Paris from Versailles by an angry mob of market women. In an open carriage, they were jeered at by a crowd shouting abuse at the king and queen as they made their way back to Paris. The King and Queen were obliged to keep the windows of their carriage open because of the crowd. At one point, a protester waved a picture of a dead Royal Guard at Versailles in front of the queen, who looked away in horror. U.S. imperialist aggression in the Philippines was paid for by the Filipino people. They were made to pay taxes to the U.S. colonial regime to shoulder a big chunk of the expenditures and the floating-rate bonds for the Philippine government through Wall Street banks. Of course, the huge profits from the long-term exploitation of the Filipino people would be the basic gains of US imperialism. To understand the Templars, it is necessary to understand the context in which the order was created. The period in which these events occurred is commonly referred to as the High Middle Ages, the period between the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries (1000–1300 CE). The Middle Ages were preceded by the Early Middle Ages and followed by the Late Middle Ages, which by convention end around 1500. Technological determinism is a concept that encompasses several ideas in practice, from the provision of technology or the imperative to provide technology to a strict concept that human destiny is determined by an underlying logic associated with the laws of science and its expression in technology. Most technological determinist views share two general ideas: 1) that technological development is independent of cultural or political influences; 2) that technology itself has "effects" on society that are independent of social conditions. For example, someone might claim that the invention of the automobile required the invention of roads. A national network of roads is not economically viable for only a few cars, so new methods of production are developed to reduce the cost of owning a car. The increased number of cars on the road led to an increase in road accidents, which gave rise to the invention of new techniques in the health system to treat the bodies of the injured. Romanticism had a great deal of cultural determinism as a result of writers such as Goethe, Fichte, and Schlegel. In the context of Romanticism, geography made citizens and, over time, customs and culture associated with that geography, which were in harmony with the place of the society, became better than possibly binding laws. As Paris is known as the fashion capital of modern times, Constantinople was considered the fashion capital of medieval Europe. Its status as a centre of luxury began about 400 A.D. and lasted to about 1100 A.D. Its status was reduced in the 12th century when crusaders returned from the Crusades with goods such as silk and spices, which were more valuable than anything the Byzantine markets could offer. It was during this period that the title "Capital of Fashion" was transferred from Constantinople to Paris. The Gothic language was at its peak between the 10th and 11th centuries, and also in the 14th century. In the beginning, the clothing was greatly influenced by the Byzantine culture of the Eastern region. However, due to the slow communication channels, West Coast styles may be behind the times by 25 to 30 years. By the end of the Middle Ages, Western Europe had developed its own style. One of the most important innovations at that time was the use of buttons to close clothing. Subsistence farming is farming for the purpose of providing just enough food to sustain the farmer and his family. Subsistence farming is a simple, usually organic, system of farming which uses native seeds from the region, and may use crop rotation or other simple techniques to maximize yield. Historically, most farmers were involved in subsistence farming, and this remains the case in most developing nations. Subcultures are groups of individuals with similar mindsets who feel neglected by society standards and help them gain a sense of identity. Subcultures can be distinguished by age, ethnicity, class, location, or sex of their members. The characteristics that distinguish a subculture may be linguistic, aesthetic, religious, political, sexual, geographic, or some combination. Members of a subculture often signal their affiliation through distinctive style of dress, mannerisms, and argot. One of the most common methods used to illustrate the importance of socialization is to look at the few unfortunate cases of children who, through neglect, misfortune, or intentional abuse, were not socialized by adults when they were growing up. These children are called "feral" or "wild" children. Some of these children were confined by individuals (often their own parents); in some cases, the abandonment of the child was due to the parents' rejection of the child because of severe intellectual or physical disability. Children who are traumatized may have experienced serious trauma or abuse as a child, before being abandoned or running away from home. Others are said to have been created by animals; some are even said to have lived in the jungle by themselves. When completely reared by animals, the wild child's behavior (within the bounds of physical possibility) is almost indistinguishable from the behavior of the particular pet animal, whether it be fear or indifference to humans. While project-based learning makes learning both easier and more interesting, the scaffolding approach goes one step further. Scaffolding is not a learning method, but rather a way to help students who are experiencing a new learning experience, such as using a new computer or starting a new project. Scaffolds can be either virtual or physical; in other words, a teacher can function as a scaffold, as can that chatty Microsoft Office assistant. The virtual ramp simulators are integrated into the software and are designed to question, alert, and explain procedures that may be difficult for the student to master alone. Children are removed from their parents for an infinite number of reasons ranging from neglect to abuse and even extortion. No child should be raised in an environment that does not nurture, care, and educate, yet this happens. We see the Family Reunification System as a safe space for these children. Our adoption platform is duty-bound to provide secure homes, loving guardians, regular schooling, and assured medical care. It is assumed that foster care will meet all the needs that were lacking in the home from which they came. The Internet combines elements of both mass communication and interpersonal communication. The distinctive features of the Internet leads to additional dimensions in terms of approach and gratification. For example, "learning" and "socializing" are important reasons why people use the Internet (James et al., 1995). Personal involvement" and "relationship continuity" were also identified as new motivations by Eighmey and McCord (1998) when they studied reactions to web pages. The use of video recording has led to important discoveries in the understanding of micro expressions, facial movements that last for a fraction of a second. In particular, people are said to be able to tell when someone is lying by reading their micro expressions. Oliver Sacks, in his article The President's Speech, showed how people who are unable to understand speech because of brain damage are able to accurately judge the sincerity of others. He even suggests that such an ability to read human body language may be shared by other animals, such as pet dogs. Genetic research in the 20th century concluded that there were two types of gene variation: silent and overt. The mutation adds a new genetic variant and selection removes it from the group of expressed variants. Segregation and recombination mix the alleles from the two parents in the offspring. In the savanna, it is hard for a primate with a digestive system like that of a human to get enough protein from available vegetation to meet its requirements. In addition, not acting can have serious consequences: severe depression, malnutrition and ultimately death. The most easily accessible plant-based resources would be proteins in leaves and legumes, but those are hard for primates to digest unless they are cooked. Meanwhile, animal-based foods (ants, termites, eggs) are not only easily digested, but provide high-quality protein containing all essential amino acids. Considering all of this, it would not be surprising to learn that our ancient ancestors solved their "protein problems" much like the savanna chimpanzees do today. A nap is a short sleep that is intentional, usually lasting from 10 to 60 minutes. This can easily be done by using a medium-loud alarm to wake a person without fully rousing him or her. If you find yourself re-setting your alarm while still in bed, try putting it on the other side of the room so you have to get out of bed to turn it off. Other bio-rhythm based possibilities include drinking lots of liquid (preferably water or tea, a well known diuretic) before bed, since this will force you to wake up to urinate. The level of a person's inner peace is inversely correlated to their level of physical and spiritual stress. The lower the tension, the higher the vital force. Every person has the potential to completely experience peace and happiness. Everyone can achieve enlightenment. The one thing that prevents you from achieving enlightenment is your own tension and negativity. Tibetan Buddhism is based on the teachings of the Buddha, but it is expanded by the Mahayana path of love and by many yogic techniques of India. In essence, Tibetan Buddhism is quite simple. It is comprised of Kundalini Yoga, meditation, and the path of enlightened love. In Kundalini yoga, kundalini energy (life force) is awakened through yoga postures, breathing exercises, mantras, and visualization. The central part of Tibetan meditation is Deity Yoga. Through visualization of various deities, energy channels are cleansed, chakras are activated, and enlightened consciousness is created. Germany was a regular villain in World War II, which led to U.S. and Soviet cooperation. With the end of the war, ideological, political, and cultural clashes led to the dissolution of the countries. Two years after the end of the war, former allies had become enemies, and the Cold War began. It was envisioned to last for the next 40 years, and indeed would see action in Africa, Asia, Afghanistan, Cuba, and many other places. By 17 September 1939, the Polish defense had already been destroyed, and the only option was to retreat and regroup in the Romanian bridgehead. However, those plans became obsolete almost overnight when more than 800,000 Soviet Red Army soldiers created the Belarusian and Ukrainian fronts after invading eastern Poland in violation of the Treaty of Riga, the Soviet–Polish Non-Aggression Pact, and other international, bilateral, and multilateral agreements. Shipping is by far the most efficient way to transport goods over long distances by sea. Traditionally the role of the Navy has been to ensure that their country is able to move both troops and supplies while denying their opponents the ability to do the same. One of the most notable recent examples of this was the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II. The United States was trying to get men and supplies across the Atlantic Ocean to help Britain. At the same time, the German Navy, using mostly U-boats, was trying to stop that traffic. If the Allies had failed, Germany would have been in a position to conquer Britain just as they had conquered the rest of Europe. Domestication of sheep is believed to have taken place about 10,000 years ago in the Zagros Mountains of Iran. Ancient cultures and tribes began keeping these animals as they provided milk, fur, and meat. Domesticated goats were usually kept in hillside or mountainous areas in herds, under the care of shepherds, often children or adolescents, akin to the more well known shepherd. These methods of herding are still used today. The first wagonways in England were made in the 16th century. Although the carriages were made only of parallel planks of wood, this made it possible for the horses to pull them at a higher speed and carry heavier loads on the rougher roads. Sleepers were put in early on to keep the rails in place. Eventually it was found that the rails would be more effective if they had a metal cover. This became standard practice, but it was hard on the wooden wheels of wagons. Eventually wooden wheels were replaced by iron wheels. In 1767, the first all-iron rails were introduced. The first known means of transportation to humans was walking upright, about two million years ago with the invention of the upright man, Homo erectus. Their ancestor, the Australopithecus, did not walk upright like we do. Evidence of bipedalism dates from about 4.2 to 3.9 million years ago in the fossils of Australopithecus. However, Sahelanthropus may have walked upright on two legs about seven million years ago. We can start living in a way that is more friendly to the environment, we can join the environmental movement, and we can even be activists to reduce future suffering to some degree. This is exactly what most symptomatic relief does. However, if we don't want just a temporary solution, then we need to get to the root of the problem and fix it. It can't be denied that the world has changed considerably due to the scientific and technological achievements of the human race, and problems have increased due to overpopulation and the lavish lifestyle of the man. After the adoption by Congress on July 4, a handwritten copy, signed by both the President of Congress, John Hancock, and Secretary Charles Thomson, was delivered to a printer named John Dunlap, located about a mile away. During the night, about 150-200 copies were made, known today as "Dunlap copies". The first public reading of the document was given by John Nixon on the West Lawn of the Independence Hall on July 8. On July 6, a copy was sent to George Washington, who read it to his troops in New York on July 9. A copy also arrived in London by August 10. Dunlap's 25 remaining copies are the earliest surviving examples of the document. The original, hand-written copy is lost. Many paleontologists today believe that a group of dinosaurs survived and is still alive today. We call them the birds. Many people don't think of them as dinosaurs because they have feathers and can fly. But there are many similarities between modern birds and the dinosaurs. They have claws and scales on their feet, lay eggs, and walk on two legs like a Tyrannosaurus rex. Nearly all modern computers represent information in the form of binary numbers. A binary number can have only one of two values, 0 or 1, and is called a binary digit - or a bit, in computer jargon. Internal poisoning may not be immediately apparent. Symptoms such as vomiting are so nonspecific that a diagnosis cannot be made immediately. The most common sign for an internal poisoning event is an open container of medication or a toxic chemical used as a household cleaner. See the label for instructions specific to this poison. Entomologists use the term "insects" in a formal sense to refer to this group of insects. This word is derived from a former familiarity with cockroaches, which are rather structurally complex insects to be stuck to people. Both the barber and the bedbug are nest parasites, adapted to living in the nests or roosts of their hosts. There are an estimated 400,000 cases of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the United States, making it the leading neurological disease of young adults and adults MS is a disease of the central nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord and optic nerve. The research showed women were twice as likely to be diagnosed with multiple sclerosis than men. A couple may decide that having a baby is not in their or their son's best interests. Such couples are permitted to decide whether or not to make an adoption plan for the baby. In an adoption, biological parents give up their parental rights so that another couple can take over the care of the child. The goal of science is to understand how the world works, using the scientific method. Science research is led by the scientific method. It is not, in fact, only testing; an experiment is a trial used to disprove one or more hypotheses or to ask questions. Observation also guides scientific research. Naturalists and philosophers focused on classic Latin texts, especially the Bible. All of Aristotle's scientific thinking, including psychology, was accepted. As knowledge of Greek declined in the West, it became distant from its Greek philosophical and scientific roots. Many normal physiological and behavioral rhythms are dependent upon the presence of endogenous cycles and their production by biological clocks. Periodic rhythms, which are not absolutely responses to environmental stimuli, have been observed in most living things, including bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals. Biological clocks are self-sustaining oscillators that will continue to operate for at least one complete cycle without environmental interference. Hershey and Chase's experiment was one of the most important pieces of evidence that DNA was genetic material. Hershey and Chase used bacteriophages, or viruses, to introduce their own DNA into the bacteria. They then performed two experiments to either label the phage DNA with radioactive phosphorus or the phage protein with radioactive sulfur. Mutations can have a number of different effects depending on the type of mutation, the importance of the piece of genetic material affected, and whether the affected cells are germ cells or not. Only mutations in germ cells can be passed on to children, while mutations in other parts of the body can cause cell death or cancer. Nature tourism is travel to natural areas for enjoyment of natural beauty, including flora and fauna. Local activities include fishing, photography, watching birds, visiting parks, and learning about the ecosystem. A great example is to visit, take photos, and learn about orangutans in Borneo. Every morning, people from small towns inland drive to work in other towns, and meet other people who work in those small inland towns. This dynamic bus system is connected in some way to everyone, and is supporting a car-based transportation system. Science today is pointing out that this carbon-based economy has disrupted the stable biosphere that has allowed human evolution over the past two million years. Everyone participates in society, and everyone uses the transportation systems. Almost everyone also complains about the transportation systems. In developed countries, you seldom hear similar levels of complaints about the quality of the water or bridges collapsing. Why do transport systems get so many complaints, why do they fail so often? Are transport engineers simply incompetent or something more fundamental going on? Traffic Flow is the analysis of how individual motorists and their vehicles move between different locations, and how they interact with each other. Unfortunately, studying traffic flow is hard because driver behavior cannot be predicted with 100 percent certainty. Fortunately, drivers tend to behave in a reasonably consistent fashion, so traffic flows can be represented mathematically. To better represent the traffic flow, relations were established between the three main features: (1) flow, (2) density, and (3) speed. These relationships help with planning, designing, and operating transportation facilities. Insects were the first animals to take to the skies, and their ability to fly has helped them escape predators, find food and partners more efficiently. Most insects can fold their wings back across their bodies. This gives them a range of small places to hide from predators. Today, the only insects that cannot fold their wings back are dragonflies and damselflies. About a thousand years ago, a man named Aristarchus said that the Solar System went around the Sun. Some people believed that he was right, but most people believed the opposite; that the Solar System went around the Earth, including the Sun (and the other stars). That makes sense, because Earth doesn't look like it's moving, does it? The Amazon is the largest river on Earth, and the second longest. It carries more than eight times the volume of the world's second largest river. The Amazon is also the largest river on Earth, sometimes reaching widths of almost 10 km. Twenty percent of the world's fresh water that flows into the oceans comes from the Amazon. The main branch of the Amazon River is 6,387 km (3,980 mi) long. It is fed by thousands of smaller rivers. Although stone pyramids were built right up to the end of the Old Kingdom, the Giza pyramids were the tallest, and technically the most advanced. The ancient Egyptians of the New Kingdom were awed by the achievements of their predecessors, who had been dead for more than a thousand years. The population of Vatican City is about 800 people, and it is the smallest independent country in the world by population. The Vatican City officially uses Italian in its legislation and communications. Italian is also the lingua franca among most of those who work in the state, while Latin is still widely used in religious ceremonies. All citizens of the Vatican are Roman Catholics. Humans have known the basic chemical elements such as gold, silver, and copper for a long time because they can be found unrefined in nature, and are relatively easy to extract using primitive tools. Philosopher Aristotle theorized that all matter is composed of one or more of the four elements - earth, water, air, and fire. This was more to do with the four states of matter (in the same order): solid, liquid, gaseous, and plasma, though he also theorized that they are rearranged to form new things. Alloys are simply a mix of two or more metals. There are a lot of elements in the periodic table. Elements such as calcium and potassium are considered metals. Of course there are other metals such as silver and gold. You can also get alloys that are composed of a small amount of non-metallic elements, such as carbon. Everything in the universe is made of matter, and all matter is made of tiny particles called atoms. Atoms are so small that trillions of them could fit into the period at the end of this sentence. So the pencil was a good friend to a lot of people when it came out. Unfortunately, as new ways of writing appeared, the pencil became less important. Nowadays people communicate by using computers and do not need to be close to a pointer. We can only imagine what the keyboard will look like when something new comes along. A fission bomb works on the principle that energy is needed to assemble a nucleus of multiple protons and neutrons. It's sort of like pushing a heavy car up a hill. The energy stored in the nucleus is released again as the nucleus splits, and some of that energy is given off as heat. Some atoms have unstable nuclei, which means that they tend to split apart with little or no prompting. The surface of the Moon is covered in small rocks and dust. The outer part of the Moon is called the crust. The crust is 70 km (43 mi) thick at the surface and 100 km (62 mi) thick at the base. The layer is thinner under the sea and thicker under the mountains. There could be more debris on the near side because the crust is thinner. It was easier for lava to come up. Content theories seek to understand what motivates people, or what they find attractive. These theories suggest that people have certain needs and desires that are internalized as they become adults. These theories look at what it is in particular people that makes them want to do the things they do, and what in their environment will encourage or discourage them from doing those things. Two popular theories of motivation are Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theory and Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory. In general, two personalities will emerge as managers begin to lead their former coworkers. One side of the spectrum will try to remain "one of the guys" (or gals). These managers have a hard time making unpopular decisions, disciplining, assessing performance, delegating, and holding people accountable. At the other end of the spectrum, the individual becomes an impossible person to recognise, someone who feels he has to change everything that the team has done and do it his own way. After all, the leader is responsible for the success and failure of a team. This behavior often leads to conflicts between the leaders and the rest of the team. Virtual teams need to maintain the same standards of excellence as conventional teams, but there are some slight differences. Virtual team members typically serve as the primary point of contact for their immediate physical team. They are often more independent than regular tour members, as their tours can be at odds with local time zones. The presence of a "virtual invisible team" (Larson and LaFasto, 1989, p.109) is also a unique characteristic of a virtual team. The "invisible team" is the management team to whom everyone on the team reports. The invisible team sets standards for everyone on the team. Why would a company want to go through the trouble of establishing a learning organization? - One of the practical reasons for the concepts of the learning organization is innovation. When all available resources are effectively utilized by all the functional departments of an organization, creativity and ingenuity become evident. As a result, a process that a team-based organization goes through in order to address a problem can lead to an innovative new process that meets the client's needs. Before an organization can be innovative, leaders must create a culture of innovation, shared knowledge, and organizational learning. Angel (2006) explains Continuum's approach as a methodology to help organizations achieve higher levels of performance. Neurobiological data provides physical evidence for a theoretical approach to cognitive science research, thus narrowing the scope of research and making it much more precise. Scientists have relied on correlations between behavioral and brain abnormalities to guide their research. It is already well known that many types of brain damage, injury, lesions, and tumors affect behavior, and impair certain mental functions. The arrival of new technologies has allowed us to see and investigate brain structures and processes in a way that was never possible before. This gives us a lot of information and material to build simulation models that help us understand the processes that go on in our mind. While AI has a very strong science fiction connotation, AI is a branch of computer science which deals with the behavior, learning and adaptation of intelligent machines. Artificial intelligence research is concerned with the creation of intelligent machines that can automatically perform tasks that would normally require human intelligence. Examples include control, planning and scheduling, interpersonal skills, problem solving and diagnostic ability, and verbal and written communication skills. These things have become separate disciplines, and their aim is to find solutions to real-life problems. Artificial intelligence is widely used in fields such as economics, medicine, engineering, and military, and is integrated in many consumer software applications and video games. Class trips are very important for any school group. Often, teachers would love to take their students somewhere that is inaccessible by bus. Technology offers a solution with virtual field trips. From the classroom, students can visit a museum, go to an aquarium, or admire beautiful works of art. A virtual field trip can also be a great way to reflect on a hike and share experiences with future classes. For instance, students at North Carolina's Bennet School create a website about their trip to the state capital every year, but old websites are kept online as scrapbooks. Blogs can also help students become better writers. Students, of course, often start blogging with poor grammar and spelling, but the knowledge that they are being read by anyone other than their teacher makes a big difference. As students are often the most critical audience, the blogger begins to take steps to improve his writing and avoid criticism. Also, having a blog "forces students to become more aware of their place in the world." The need to interest the reader will motivate students to be intelligent and interesting (Toto, 2004). Blogging is a tool that has inspired collaboration and encouraged students to extend their learning beyond the traditional school day. Proper use of blogs "can make students more analytical and critical; by actively interacting with online content, students can be placed in the context of other writings, and gain their own views on specific issues (Oravec, 2002). Ottawa is the charming and bilingual capital of Canada, and is home to a number of art galleries and museums that showcase the country's past and present. The Niagara Falls are further south; while to the north lies the pristine natural beauty of the Muskoka Lakes and more. Because of all of this and more, Ontario is considered by many to be the essence of Canada. Much of the country to the north is sparsely populated, and some areas are virtually uninhabited. A population comparison that surprises many people: There are more African Americans living in the U.S. than there are Canadian citizens. East Africa or Eastern Africa is the eastern portion of the African continent, comprising the countries of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Somalia. Madagascar is by far the largest, and an entire continent when it comes to wildlife. Most of the smaller islands are independent nations, or French overseas territories, and are known for their luxury beach resorts. The Arabs also brought Islam to the islands, which gained popularity in Comoros and Mayotte. European exploration and colonialism began in the 15th century with the discovery of the sea route from Europe to India by Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. The country is bordered to the north by the Sahel, to the south and west by the Atlantic Ocean. Women: it is advisable for all female travellers to claim to be married, regardless of their actual marital status. A ring can also be useful (as long as it doesn't look too valuable). Women need to be aware that cultural differences may allow behavior that would otherwise be considered rude or creepy - following a woman, grabbing an arm, etc. Be firm in rejecting men. Don't be afraid to be firm (for cultural or other reasons, that doesn't mean it's all good!). The modern city of Casablanca was founded by Berber fishermen in the 10th century, and was used by the Phoenicians, Romans, and Moroccans as a strategic port called Anfa. The Portuguese destroyed and rebuilt it as the White House, only to abandon it after the 1755 earthquake. The Moroccan sultan rebuilt the city as Daru l-Bayda, from which the name Casablanca was derived by Spanish traders who established a base there. Casablanca is one of the least interesting places to shop in Morocco as a whole. In the historic part of the Medina, traditional Moroccan items such as tagines, pottery, leatherware, narghiles and an abundance of tourist traps are easily found. Goma is a city in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, near Rwanda. In 2002, Goma was destroyed by lava from the eruption of nearby Nyiragongo volcano, which buried large parts of the city, especially the centre. While Goma is reasonably safe, any visiting outside the town should be studied to understand the status of the ongoing battle in the North Kivu province. The city is also a base for climbing nearby Nyiragongo volcano and some of the cheapest gorilla trekking in Africa. Taxis (mototaxis) are available in Goma, and a normal (local) price for a short ride is around 500 Congolese francs. Timbuktu has come to be used as a metaphor for distant and exotic lands, given its relative inaccessibility. Today, Timbuktu is a poor city despite its fame as a tourist attraction, and it has an airport. In 1990, it was placed on the World Heritage in Danger list due to the threat of desertification. It was a major stop on Henry Louis Gates's PBS series Wonders of the African World. The city is vastly different from the rest of the country, and has a more Arab than African feel to it. Kruger National Park is located in northeast South Africa, along the border of Mozambique to the east, Zimbabwe to the north, and the Crocodile River to the south. The park is 19,500 km2 (7,500 sq mi) and contains 14 different ecological zones, ranging from tropical rainforest to desert. It is one of South Africa's most popular attractions and is considered the flagship of the South African National Parks (SANParks). There are entrance and conservation fees for the park, just as there are for all national parks in South Africa. A Wildcard can also be a great way to see multiple parks in Southern Africa or all of Southern Africa's national parks. Hong Kong Island, which gives its name to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, is where most visitors go to see the sights. The skyscrapers of Hong Kong have been likened to a shimmering bar graph, thanks to their reflections in the waters of Victoria Harbour. For the best views of Hong Kong, leave the island and head across the harbour to Kowloon. Most of Hong Kong's urban development has taken place on reclaimed land along the north coast. This is where the British Colonists chose to settle, and so if you are interested in evidence of early British colonial influence, this is a good place to start. The Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest in the world, covering 80 km (50 mi) along the coasts of Bangladesh and India. The Sundarbans is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The part which lies in India is called the Sundarbans National Park. But the forests are not just mangrove swamps - they are home to some of the world's remaining great rainforests. The Sundarbans covers an area of 3,850 km2, of which one third is water, and is the largest contiguous mangrove forest in the world. Since 1966, the Sundarbans have been a wildlife sanctuary, and an estimated 400 Bengal tigers and 30,000 deer live there today. There are several buses departing from the inter-district bus station (on the other side of the river) throughout the day, but most, especially those going east and to Jakar/Bumthang, leave between 06:30 and 07:30. Buses between districts are usually full, so it is best to book your seat a few days in advance. Most districts are served by Japanese mini-buses, which are comfortable and durable. Taxis are a quick and comfortable way to get around, especially to nearby destinations such as Paro (Nu 150) and Punakha (Nu 200). The Oiapoque Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge. It crosses the Oiapoque River to connect the Brazilian town of Oiapoque with French Guiana's Saint-George-de-Oiapoque. The two towers are 83 metres high, 378 metres long and have two runways each 3.5 metres wide. The vertical lift of the bridge is 15 metres. The bridge was completed in August 2011 and opened to traffic in March 2017. The bridge is scheduled to open in September 2017, which coincides with the scheduled completion of Brazilian customs inspections. The Guarani were the most important indigenous group in what is now eastern Paraguay, living as nomadic hunters and practicing subsistence farming. Other Native American groups, such as the Guaicurus and the Paiaguás, also lived in the Chaco region and relied on hunting, gathering, and fishing for their livelihoods. During the 16th century, the land now known as Paraguay was called La Gigante de las Indias (The Giant of the Indies) by the Spanish conquerors because of its size. The Spanish began a three-century period of colonization. Since the founding of Asunción in 1537, Paraguay has succeeded in preserving many of its indigenous characteristics and identity. Argentina is known for having one of the best polo players, and teams, in the world. The biggest event of the year takes place in December at the Las Cañadas Polo Fields. Smaller tournaments and matches can also be seen here at other times of the year. To find out about tournaments and where to buy tickets for polo matches, visit the Argentine Polo Association. The official currency of the Falkland Islands is the Falkland Island pound (abbreviated FKP), which is equal to one pound sterling (GBP). Money can be exchanged at the sole bank on the islands, which is located in Stanley, opposite the FIC West store. Pound sterling is usually accepted anywhere in the islands, and in Stanley US dollars and major credit cards are also widely accepted. In remote islands, odds are you won't be able to use credit cards, though you may be able to pay with U.S. or British money. Find out ahead of time what form of payment the proprietors will accept. It is next to impossible to change money outside of the Falkland Islands, so be sure to exchange your money before departing the islands. As Montevideo is south of the equator, it is summer there while it is winter in the northern hemisphere and vice versa. Montevideo is a subtropical region with temperatures above 30 °C (86 °F) in the summer. Winter can be deceptively cold, with temperatures rarely below freezing, but wind and humidity make it feel colder than it is. There is no such thing as a "rainy" or "dry" season - the amount of rainfall remains more or less the same throughout the year. While most of the animals in the park are accustomed to the presence of humans, they are still wild animals and should not be fed or otherwise disturbed. Follow park regulations and stay at least 100 yards/meters away from bears and wolves, and 25 yards/meters away from all other wildlife! Though they appear docile, bison, bears, and wolves, like all wild animals, can be dangerous. Year on year, dozens of visitors are injured because they get too close. These animals are large, wild, and potentially dangerous, so don't get too close. Also, be aware that bears and other wildlife are attracted to food odors, so store and prepare food appropriately, and keep your campsite clean. Apia is the capital of Samoa. The city is located on the island of Upolu and has an estimated population of 40,000. Apia was founded in the 1850s, and has been the official capital of Samoa since 1959. The port was the site of a well-known naval standoff in 1889, when seven German, American, and British ships refused to leave. All the ships were sunk, with the exception of a Royal Navy cruiser. Nearly 200 German and American lives were lost. During the Mau Mau Uprising, a peaceful meeting in the town was ambushed, and the paramount chief Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III was killed. There are many beaches because Auckland is between two bays. The most popular ones are in three areas. The beaches on the north coast (in the North Harbour district) face the Pacific Ocean and extend from Long Bay in the north to Devonport in the south. They are mostly sandy beaches with safe swimming, and many are shaded by pohutukawa trees. The beaches on the Tamaki Drive are on the shores of Waitemata Harbour, in the sophisticated suburbs of Mission Bay and St Heliers, in central Auckland. These are often family-friendly beaches packed with shops and restaurants right on the beach. Swimming is safe. The local beer is called "Number One". It is not a real beer, but it is fun and refreshing. The other local beer is called "Manta". There are so many great French wines to enjoy, but if you're looking for something a little different, then look no further than New Zealand and Australia. The local tap water is completely safe to drink from, but bottled water is easily available if you prefer. For Australians, the concept of a "flat white" coffee is a strange one. A short black coffee is an "espresso", a cappuccino has a lot of cream (not foam) and tea is served without milk. Hot chocolate is made according to Belgian standards. Natural juices are expensive but good. Many trips to the reef are made year-round, and injuries from diving or snorkeling at the reef are rare. Continue to heed the advice of local authorities, obey all signs and heed security warnings. The box jellyfish can be found near beaches and river mouths from October to April, but can be seen at other times of the year. Sharks actually exist, but they rarely attack humans. Most sharks are scared of humans and will swim away. Saltwater crocodiles do not actively live in the ocean. Their main habitat is in the river systems to the north of Rockhampton. An advance reservation will ensure that you have a place to stay when you arrive at your destination. Travel agents are usually affiliated with specific hotels, though other types of lodging, such as hostels, may be booked through a travel agent. Travel agents usually offer packages which include breakfast, transport to and from the airport, and sometimes even flights and hotels. They can also secure your reservation so that you have time to think about the offer or gather other documents for your destination (e.g. a visa). However, if you have any problems or special requests, you should contact your travel agent, not the hotel directly. At some music festivals the vast majority of attendees camp on site, and for many this is an essential part of the experience. If you want to be close to the action then you would be advised to arrive early to secure a pitch near the music. Also remember that even after the main acts have finished for the night, some of the festival's side stages may still be going on until late. Some festivals have special areas for families with small children. If you cross the northern Baltic Sea in winter, check the location of your cabin, as the noise of the ice crushing can be unbearable to a sensitive ear. St. Petersburg cruises include city tours. Passengers are exempt from visa requirements (see terms). Casinos normally go to great lengths to maximize the time and money spent by their visitors. There are usually no windows or clocks, and the aisles are purposely winding to make it difficult to find exits. They usually have specialty food, beverage, and entertainment options to keep guests happy and on-site. Some places will serve you drinks at your table, but intoxication affects your judgment, and all good players know the importance of keeping a clear head. Whenever you find yourself driving in high latitudes or up a mountain, you need to consider the possibility of encountering snow, ice, or extremely cold temperatures. On icy or snow-covered roads, friction is low and you can't drive as if the road is dry. In a snowstorm, it is possible for enough snow to fall to immobilize you for an extended period of time. Visibility can also be reduced by falling snow or blowing snow, or by condensation or frost on car windows. On the other hand, ice and snow are normal in many countries, and traffic remains almost uninterrupted throughout the year. Safaris are probably the biggest tourist attraction in Africa, and are the main reason that many visitors come to the continent in the first place. The word safari (pronounced /səˈfɑːri/) in its colloquial use refers to a land trip to observe and experience African wildlife, especially in the savannah. Some animals, like elephants and giraffes, will come close to cars, and with basic equipment you should be able to see them. Lions, leopards and cheetahs can be skittish, and you're apt to see them best with binoculars. Also known as "wilderness walking", "trekking" or "backpacking", a foot safari involves hiking for hours or days. The Paralympics will be held between 24 August and 5 September 2021. Some events will be held at other locations around Japan. Tokyo will be the only city in Asia to have hosted both the summer and winter Olympics, having been the host city in 1964. If you had already booked your flights and accommodation for 2020 before the postponement was announced, you may be in for a hassle. Cancellation policies vary, but as of Mar. 31, 2020, most coronavirus-related cancellation policies were in effect through July 2020, when the Olympics were scheduled. Most tickets for the event are priced between 2,500 and 130,000 yen, with regular tickets costing about 7,000 yen. Drying clothes can help them dry out. Many hotels provide an iron and board which can be borrowed, even if there is not one in the room. If you don't have an iron, or if you don't like using a curling iron, you can try a hair dryer. Be careful not to overheat the fabric (which could cause it to shrink or even burn). There are many ways to purify water, some more effective against specific threats. In some areas, boiling for one minute is sufficient; in others, several minutes are required. The quality of filters varies, so if you are in any way unsure, consider buying bottled water from a reputable company. Travelers can expect to encounter animals that are new to them in regions outside of their home range. Pests can spoil food, irritate, or in the worst case, cause an allergic reaction, spread poison, or transmit infections. Infectious diseases, or animals that can injure or kill people by force, are not usually considered pests. Duty-free shopping is the opportunity to buy goods without paying taxes and duties in certain places. Travellers in countries with high taxes on things like alcohol and cigarettes can save a lot of money, especially on things like alcohol and cigarettes. The stretch from Point Marion to Fairmont is the most challenging for drivers on the Buffalo-Pittsburgh Road, which often passes through isolated hill country. If you are unaccustomed to driving in the mountains, use common sense: steep grades, narrow roads, and sharp curves are the norm. The speed limits announced are noticeably lower than those in the preceding and following sections - usually 55-65 km/h - and compliance is strictly enforced. Interestingly, however, cell phone service is much better here than it is along many other portions of the trail, such as in the Pennsylvania Wilds. German sweets are very good, and in Bavaria they are quite sophisticated and varied, similar to those of the neighboring Austria in the south. Fruit-based confections are ubiquitous, with baked apples in sweetmeats year-round, and cherries, peaches, and plums in season in the summer. Many German bakeries also feature nuts, raisins, and other dried fruit in their famous breads, which is why they pair so well with a strong cup of coffee. If you want something small but sweet, try some jelly doughnuts, known as Berliner, Pfannkuchen or Krapfen depending on the region. A curry is a dish whose main ingredients are spices and herbs, with or without meat or vegetables. A curry can be "dry" or "wet" depending on how much liquid is used. In northern India and Pakistan, yogurt is commonly used in curries; in southern India and other coastal regions of the subcontinent, coconut milk is more common. With 17,000 islands to choose from, Indonesian cuisine is a veritable smorgasbord of regional styles found throughout the country. However, without other qualifiers, the term is usually taken to mean food originating from central and eastern Java. Now ubiquitous throughout the archipelago, Javanese cuisine includes an array of simple yet flavorful hot dishes, with coconut, chili, sugar (especially coconut sugar), and various aromatic herbs as preferred seasonings. To keep a knight's feet from dragging, stirrups were used, which hung from either side of the saddle. They give the rider more stability, but can be a safety issue, as the rider's feet can get trapped in them. If a rider is thrown from a horse, but is caught in the stirrup, he or she could be dragged by the horse. To avoid this risk, several safety precautions can be taken. First, most pilots use boots with a high heel and a flat sole, which is quite narrow. Some saddles, particularly English saddles, have safety bars which prevent the leather from falling off the saddle if the rider falls backwards. As Chile's premier rock climbing destination, the Cochamó Valley is often referred to as the "Yosemite of South America" due to its numerous steep granite cliffs and walls. Meetings include exciting perspectives of the peaks. Climbers from all over the world are constantly establishing new routes among the infinite possibilities of the cliffs. Snowboarding and skiing are popular winter sports that involve going down a snow-covered hill on a snowboard or skis. For many enthusiasts, skiing is an important activity when they travel, sometimes referred to as "ski bums" who take a number of trips for the sole purpose of skiing. The idea of skiing is very old - rock paintings of skiers date from 5000 B.C.! Alpine skiing as a sport dates back to at least the 17th century, and in 1861 the world's first ski club was established in Australia by Norwegian settlers. Backpacking skiing: also known as backcountry skiing, ski touring or ski mountaineering. It is related but usually does not involve skiing or mountaineering, which is done in steep terrain and requires much stiffer boots and skis. Think of the skiing trail as a hiking trail. In good condition, you can cover more distance than on foot, but speed will seldom approach that of cross-country skiing without a heavy pack on a prepared trail. Europe is a small continent geographically, but has many independent countries. Normal travel between several countries would require multiple visas and passport control. The Schengen Area, however, operates as a single country in this regard. If you remain in this area, you will not go through another immigration checkpoint when you cross the border again. Also, with a Schengen visa, you will not have to apply for a separate visa for each of the Schengen member countries, which will save you time, money, and paperwork. There is no universal definition of what constitutes an antique. Some governments define antiques as anything 100 years old or more. The age range varies geographically, with the age limit sometimes being lower in places like North America than it is in Europe. Artisan goods may be antique, but they are not as old as similar mass-produced goods. Reindeer herding is an important means of livelihood among the Sami people, and the culture of trade is also important for many other professional classes. Although it is a tradition, not all Sami have participated in large-scale reindeer herding, but have relied on fishing, hunting, and so on, using the reindeer mostly as draft animals. Today, many Sami work in modern businesses. Tourism is an important source of income in Sápmi, the Sami homeland. Although widely used, especially among non-Romani people, the word "gipsy" is often considered pejorative because of its association with negative stereotypes and inaccurate perceptions of the Romani people. If the country you are visiting is under a travel advisory, your health insurance and/or trip cancellation insurance may be affected. Also, you should look at what other governments say about their citizens traveling abroad, but that advice is for their citizens. For instance, an American in the Middle East is likely to experience different things from an European or an Arab. Advice is only a brief summary of the political situation in a given country. The views expressed are typically superficial, general, and simplistic compared to the more in-depth information available from other sources. A weather phenomenon that is potentially hazardous, socially or economically disruptive, or life-threatening. Bad weather can happen anywhere in the world, at any time of year, and under a variety of conditions. High winds, hail, excessive rainfall, and forest fires are some of the effects of a severe climate, as are storms, tornadoes, flash floods, and cyclones. Regional and seasonal severe weather includes blizzards, snowstorms, ice storms, and dust storms. Travellers are strongly advised to heed any weather warnings for their region as this could affect travel plans. Any visit to a country considered to be a war zone would require professional training. A web search for "Hostile Environment Training" will usually lead to an outfit in your home region. A course will usually cover all of the topics discussed here, but in much more detail, and often with practical experience. A basic course is usually 2 to 5 days long, and includes some drills, first aid, and sometimes weapons training. Many books and magazines are devoted to survival in the wilderness, but few deal with survival in a combat zone. Travellers heading overseas for gender reassignment surgery should ensure they have valid travel documents for the return journey. Governments' willingness to issue genderless passports, or update existing documents to reflect a desired name and gender, varies. The disposition of foreign governments to honor such documents is widely varied. Airport security checkpoints became much more intrusive after 9/11/2001. Transgender people who have not had gender reassignment surgery should not be required to go through body scanners with their privacy and dignity intact. Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels due to the gravitational pull of the moon and sun on the earth. Because of the underwater topography, return flow is concentrated in a few deep sections, and a strong deep current can build up. Most deaths occur from drowning while trying to swim against the current, which can be impossible. Once you get out of the current, swimming back is no more difficult than it would have been otherwise. Try to get a viewpoint from where you won't be seen or, depending on your skills or if you've been spotted, wait for help to arrive. The re-entry shock comes sooner, lasts longer, and can be more severe than the culture shock (the honeymoon is shorter). Travelers who have easily adapted to a new culture sometimes have a hard time adjusting to their native culture. When you move back to your home country after living abroad, you get accustomed to the new culture and lose some of your local cultural habits. When you went out for the first time, people were probably patient and understanding, knowing that it takes time to adjust to a new country. People don't realise that patience and understanding are also essential for those returning home. One of the things most worth seeing in the children's area is the light and sound show in the pyramid. You can see the pyramids in the dark and in silence before the show starts. You always hear the sound of tourists and traders. The history of sound and light is like a story book. The Sphinx is defined as the background and narrator of a long story. The scenes are shown on the pyramids and different pyramids are lit up. The South Shetland Islands, discovered in 1819, are claimed by several countries and have the highest number of active bases with sixteen as of 2020. The archipelago is 120 km (75 miles) north of the peninsula. The largest island is Isla Rey Jorge, where the village of Villa Las Estrellas is located. The others are Livingston Island and Deception, where an active volcano provides a dramatic natural harbour. Ellsworth Land is the southernmost part of the peninsula, bordering on the Bellingshausen Sea. Here the mountains of the Peninsula meet the plateau, re-emerging as the 360 km (225 mile) long Ellsworth Range, which is cut by the Minnesota Glacier. The northern part, or Sentinel Range, includes the highest mountains in Antarctica, Vinson Massif at 4,892 m (16,050 ft). In remote locations without cellphone coverage, a satellite phone may be the only option. A satellite phone does not usually replace a cell phone, as you must be outdoors with a view of the sky to make a call. The service is often used for transportation, including recreational boating and remote data and voice communications. Your local phone carrier can provide more details on how to connect to this service. Travelling and learning is an increasingly popular option for those taking a gap year. This is particularly popular among school-leavers, who can take a gap year before going to university, without jeopardising their education. In most cases, going to study abroad for a year as a gap year will increase your chances of getting into higher education in your home country. There will usually be a fee for enrolling in these educational programs. For those who enjoy boat trips, Finland is a great destination. Inland lakes and coastal archipelagos provide thousands of islands in the "Land of a Thousand Lakes". In the islands and lakes, you do not necessarily need a yacht. While the offshore islands and the largest lakes are big enough to accommodate any size boat, smaller boats or even canoes offer a different experience. Boating is a national pastime in Finland, with a boat for every seven or eight people. This is also done in Norway, Sweden and New Zealand, but in a much more limited way (e.g. in the Netherlands the number is one to forty). Most Baltic Sea cruises include a lengthy stay in Saint Petersburg, Russia. This means that you could spend two full days exploring the historic town and then return to the ship for the night. If you are going to do only sea trips then no separate visa is required (valid from 2009). Some cruise lines feature Berlin, Germany in their brochures. As the map above shows, Berlin is not on the coast, and a visit to the city is not included in the cruise price. Flying can be frightening for people of all ages and backgrounds, but especially those who have never flown before or who have experienced a traumatic event. It is not something to be ashamed of: it is no different from personal fears and prejudices that many people have about other things. For some, understanding a bit about how planes work and what happens during a flight can help overcome a fear of the unknown or of being out of control. Freight companies are paid to deliver things quickly. Often, time is of the essence in delivering commercial documents, merchandise or critical parts for an urgent repair. Some major airlines have their own jets, but for other routes and smaller companies, this has been an issue. If they ship by air freight, depending on the route, it may take days to arrive from origin to destination and go through customs. The only way to ship a bag was to send it as air freight, but airline regulations do not allow freight to be shipped without a passenger, so you had to be the passenger. The obvious way to fly first or business class is, of course, to pay for it yourself (or, even better, to get your company to pay for you). However, they are not cheap: expect to pay up to four times as much for a business class ticket as you would for an economy class ticket, and eleven times as much for a first class ticket. In general, you shouldn't even bother looking for a premium economy or first/business class seat on a direct A to B flight. Airlines know there is a small group of passengers who are willing to pay a premium to get where they want to go quickly and comfortably, and they charge accordingly. The capital of Moldova is Chisinau. The country's language is Romanian, but Russian is widely spoken. Moldova is a multi-ethnic republic that has suffered from ethnic conflict. In 1994, this conflict gave rise to the Transnistrian "Republic of Transnistria" in eastern Moldova, which has its own government and currency but is not recognized by any UN member state. Economic relations have been restored between the two parts of Moldova, despite the failure of political negotiations. The main religion in Moldova is Orthodox Christianity. Izmir is Turkey's third-largest city with an estimated 3.7 million people, and has the country's second-largest port after Istanbul, as well as an excellent transportation center. Once the ancient city of Ephesus, it is now a modern, developed, and crowded commercial center surrounded by mountains. Its wide avenues, glass-fronted buildings, and modern shopping malls are marked by traditional red tiled roofs, the 18th-century market, and old mosques and churches, though the city has a Mediterranean rather than a classical Turkish feel. The village of Haldarsvík overlooks the island of Eysturoy and has a unique octagonal church. There are interesting marble reliefs of pigeons on tombs in the churchyard. It is worth spending half an hour exploring the intriguing village. To the north, and easily accessible, is the romantic and fascinating town of Sintra, which became known to foreigners through Lord Byron's extravagant description of its beauties. Scotturb 403 buses frequently go to Sintra, with a stop at Cabo da Roca. Also in the north, visit the huge Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima (Relicarium), a well-known pilgrimage site of Marian apparitions. Keep in mind that you are basically visiting a huge cemetery, also as a place that is of incalculable importance to a large portion of the world's population. There are still many people - both Jewish and non-Jewish - alive today who either survived the period or had family members who were killed or worked there until they were murdered. Please, don't mock the Holocaust or the Nazis. Do not damage the place by marking or breaking buildings with graffiti. Barcelona's official languages are Catalan and Spanish. About half of the population prefers to speak Catalan, most understand it, and almost all are fluent in Spanish. However, most signs are only in Catalan, as Catalan is the language established by law as the official language. However, Spanish is widely spoken in public transportation and other facilities. Regular advertisements on the metro are in Catalan only, but unplanned interruptions are announced by an automated system in several languages, including Spanish, English, French, Arabic and Japanese. Parisians have a reputation for being egocentric, rude, and arrogant. Although this is often a misleading stereotype, manners go a long way toward making a good impression in Paris, and will greatly facilitate your travels. Parisians will seem very rude at first, but if you show some basic courtesy they'll warm up to you The Plitvice Lakes National Park is heavily forested, mostly with beech, fir and pine trees, and has a mix of alpine and Mediterranean vegetation. There is great diversity of plant communities, due to varied microclimates, different soils, and different altitudes. The area is also home to an abundance of wildlife and birds. Rare animals, such as European brown bears, wolves, eagles, owls, lynx, wild cats and martens, as well as many other common species can be found there. Women visiting the monasteries have to wear skirts that come down to their ankles, and their shoulders have to be covered as well. Most of the monasteries will provide robes for those who come unprepared, but if you bring your own robes, especially if they are brightly colored, you will probably be greeted with a smile by the monk or a nun. Similarly, men are required to wear pants that cover their ankles. Clothing can be rented on arrival; however, it is not cleaned after every use, so you may not feel comfortable using the gowns. For men, there is only one size! Majorcan cuisine, like similar Mediterranean cuisine, is based on bread, vegetables, and pork (especially pork), and uses olive oil for cooking. A simple yet popular summer meal is Pa amb Oli (bread with tomato and olive oil, topped with anything else you like, such as cheese, tuna, etc.) All nouns, including Sie for you, are capitalized at the beginning of a sentence. This is an important way of distinguishing between some verbs and objects. This also makes reading easier, possibly at the cost of some awkwardness in writing, when it is necessary to ascertain whether a verb or an adjective is being used as a noun. Italian:The pronunciation is relatively easy because most words are pronounced exactly as they are spelled. The main letters to watch out for are C and G, because of their varied pronunciations depending on the following vowel. Also, make sure to pronounce r and rr differently: caro means dear, while carro means car. Persian is a regular and relatively easy language to learn. Therefore, this Persian grammar guide will help you learn a lot about Persian grammar and understand sentences better. Of course, if you know a Romance language, it will be an easy task to learn Portuguese. Nevertheless, those who speak a little Spanish may quickly conclude that Portuguese is similar enough that there is no need to study it separately. Most of the premodern observatories have been superseded today, and are either in museums or schools. As light pollution was not a problem at the time they were built, they are often found in or near metropolitan areas or university campuses, and are easier to reach than more recent structures. Most modern telescopes for research are huge instruments in remote locations with favorable seeing conditions. The viewing of cherry blossoms, known as hanami, has been a part of Japanese culture since the eighth century. The concept originated in China, where the peach blossom was the favourite flower. Traditionally in Japan, the first cherry blossom viewing parties were held only by the emperor for himself and other members of the imperial court. Plants look best when they are in their natural habitat, so resist the temptation to remove even a "dead" leaf. If you visit a formally arranged garden, picking "samples" will get you ejected without discussion. Singapore is usually a very safe place to visit, and most things can be bought once you arrive. But while it's "hot and humid" here in the "high tropics" (just a few degrees north of the Equator), you can expect both the heat and the sun to be extreme (when it's not overcast, anyway). There are also buses heading north to Hebron, a traditional burial place of the Biblical patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and their wives. Check to see if the bus you want to take goes to Hebron and not just to the nearby town of Kiryat Arba. Inland waterways can be a great theme for a holiday. For example, visit the castles of the Loire Valley, the Upper Middle Rhine Valley or take a cruise along the interesting landmarks of the Danube or the Erie Canal. They also mark popular hiking and biking trails. Christians celebrate Christmas as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus. Many of the traditions of the holiday have been adopted by non-Christians in many parts of the world. There is a tradition of spending Easter Eve outdoors under the stars watching the sunrise. There are, of course, Christian theological explanations for this tradition, but it may be a pre-Christian spring fertility rite. Traditional churches usually have an Easter Vigil on Saturday night during Easter Weekend. Many congregations will break off at midnight to celebrate the resurrection of Christ. All the animals who originally came to the islands came either by swimming, flying, or being carried by something. Because of the distance from the mainland, most mammals are unable to make it to the Galapagos, so the Galapagos Giant Tortoise is the main herbivore in the Galapagos. Since humans arrived in the Galapagos, many mammals have been introduced, including goats, horses, cows, rats, cats, and dogs. If you visit the Arctic or Antarctic in the winter, a polar night occurs, which means the sun does not rise above the horizon. This is a great time to see the Northern Lights, as it gets dark around the right time. As the areas are lightly populated, and thus light pollution is not a problem, you can also enjoy the stars. Japanese business culture is more hierarchical and formal than what Westerners are accustomed to seeing. Suits are standard business attire, and coworkers often address each other by their last names and titles. Harmony at work is crucial, and it emphasizes the importance of working together as a team rather than celebrating individual achievements. Employees generally need the approval of supervisors for all decisions, and are expected to comply with the instructions of supervisors without question.
