Now, four months later, they're not diabetic anymore, but at the time they were," he added. Dr. Ehud Ur, a professor of medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and president of the Canadian Diabetes Association's clinical and scientific division, said the research is still in the early stages. Like other experts, he is skeptical that diabetes can be cured and notes that the findings are not relevant to those already diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Last Monday, Sara Danius, permanent secretary of the Nobel Prize Committee for Literature at the Swedish Academy, announced publicly during an interview on Sveriges Radio's radio show in Sweden that the committee, after failing to contact Bob Dylan directly regarding the awarding of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature, had given up trying to contact him. Danius said: "Right now we are not doing anything. I have called and sent e-mails to his closest colleague and got very nice replies. For now, that is it." Previously, Ring CEO Jamie Siminoff said the company was founded after he was unable to hear his doorbell from his garage workshop. He said he invented a wireless bell. Siminoff said sales increased after he appeared on the show Shark Tank in 2013, when the show's panel of investors rejected his pitch for funding. Siminoff made his television shopping debut on QVC in late 2017. Ring also reached an agreement with a competing security company, ADT Corporation. Evidence suggests that an experimental vaccine can reduce the deaths caused by Ebola, but no drug has yet been proven effective at treating the infection. An experimental antibody cocktail, ZMapp, once showed some promising results in this field, but later formal studies suggested it was less effective at preventing deaths. In the PALM trial, ZMapp acted as a control, meaning that scientists used it as a benchmark and compared it to three other drugs. USA Gymnastics is supportive of the letter from the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee and understands the imperative need for the Olympic family to provide a safe environment for all athletes. We agree with the USOC statement that states that the interests of our athletes, our clubs, and our sport would be best served by considering a significant change to the structure of our organization rather than relinquishing our accreditation. USA Gymnastics is supporting an independent investigation that seeks to understand how the abuse described so vividly by the survivors of Larry Nassar could have gone undetected for so long and is open to any and all recommendations for needed and appropriate changes. USA Gymnastics and the USOC have the same goal: making gymnastics, as well as all other sports, as safe as possible so that athletes can pursue their dreams in a positive, empowering, and safe environment. In the 1960s, Brzezinski worked as an adviser to John F. Kennedy and later to Lyndon B. Johnson. During the 1976 election, he advised Carter on foreign policy and later served as national security adviser from 1977 to 1981, succeeding Henry Kissinger. At the National Security Council, Carter relied on Brzezinski for advice on international diplomacy, such as the Camp David Accords in 1978, U.S. normalization of relations with China by the late 1970s, the Iranian Revolution and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Turkey would also take custody of ISIS fighters that European countries have refused to repatriate, according to the statement. This confirms at least some dinosaurs were feathered (a popular theory), and provides other details that are seldom seen in the fossil record, such as colour and three-dimensional structure. Scientists said the animal's feathers were brown on top and pale or carotenoid on the bottom. The find also gives new insights into the evolution of feathers in birds. As modern birds do not have a well-developed quill, called a rachis, but do have other features of feathers (barbs and barbules), researchers have inferred that the rachis is probably a later development from those other feather features. The structure of the feathers suggests that they were not used for flight, but instead used to regulate temperature, or as decoration. Researchers suggested that while the specimen is a new species of dinosaur, the feathers are from an adult and not a juvenile. The researchers suggested that although it is the skeleton of a new species of dinosaur, the specimen is an adult and not a juvenile. A car bomb exploded early today outside a police station in Gaziantep, Turkey, killing two police officers and injuring more than two dozen people. The governor's office said in a statement that nineteen of the injured were police officers. Police said they suspected a member of the so-called Islamic State (IS, also known as Daesh) was responsible for the attack. They discovered that the Sun follows the same basic principles as all the other stars in the Solar System: their activity is governed by their brightness, rotation, and nothing else. Luminosity and rotation are used together to determine a Rossby number associated with the plasma flow. The lower the Rossby number, the less magnetic activity the star has relative to its rotational inertia. Throughout his journey, Iwasaki found himself in a great deal of trouble. He's been robbed by pirates, bitten by a rabid dog in Tibet, nearly drowned in Nepal, and arrested in India. 802.11n works in both 2.4 and 5 GHz. This will be backwards compatible with 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g, as long as the base station had dual radios. 802.11n is significantly faster than its predecessors, which were theoretically capable of 600 Mbit/s. Married with two grown-up sons, Duvall made no favourable impression on Miller, with whom he was related by history. Asked for his opinion, Miller said, "Mike was talking a lot during the hearing, you know, getting ready, so I wasn't really paying attention to what he was saying." We will work hard to reduce carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by a significant amount by 2020 compared with the 2005 level," Hu said. He did not put a figure on the cuts and said they would be made in accordance with China's economic situation. He called on developing countries to "avoid the old approach of polluting first and cleaning up afterwards." He added that "however, we should not ask them to take on responsibilities that go beyond their development, maturity and capabilities." The Iraq Oil Report will be released at 12:00 GMT today. Be advised that no one can guarantee that any course of action in Iraq now will not lead to sectarian war, increased violence, or collapse into chaos. The report opens by calling for an open debate and a U.S. consensus on Middle East policy. The report is highly critical of all aspects of current government policy on Iraq and calls for an immediate change of direction. The first of the seventy-eight recommendations called for a new diplomatic initiative before year end to secure Iraq's borders against hostile attacks and to reestablish diplomatic relations with neighboring countries. Argentina's current Senator and First Lady, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, announced her candidacy for the presidency in the city of La Plata, 50 km (31 miles) from Buenos Aires, yesterday afternoon. Kirchner announced his intention to run for president at the Teatro Argentino, the same venue he used to launch his Senate campaign in 2005 as a member of the Buenos Aires provincial delegation. The debate began with the controversy over disaster relief and reconstruction spending in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which some conservative fiscal hawks joked was "Bush's New Deal for New Orleans." Liberal criticism of reconstruction efforts has focused on the awarding of reconstruction contracts to individuals with access to confidential Washington information. More than four million people attended the funeral in Rome. So many people came to pay their respects that not everyone who wanted to attend the funeral in St. Peter's Square was able to do so. To allow people to follow the ceremony, large TV screens were set up around Rome. In other Italian cities, as well as in many other places around the world - in particular in Poland - similar preparations were made, which were observed by a large number of people. In the past, historians have criticized FBI policies that have focused resources on easily solved cases, particularly those involving stolen cars, in order to boost the bureau's clearance rate. Congress began funding the Obscenity Prohibition Act in 2005, and specified that the FBI should dedicate 10 agents to fighting adult pornography. Bush arrived in Singapore on November 16, beginning a weeklong Asian tour. He met with Singapore's deputy prime minister, Wong Kan Seng, and discussed trade and terrorism with Singapore's prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong. Following a week of falling poll numbers as he approached the midpoint of his term, Bush unveiled his proposed expansion of trade with Asia. Prime Minister Stephen Harper decided to send the "Clean Air Act" to a Commons committee for review by all parties before it was read a second time, after a twenty-five minute meeting with NDP leader Jack Layton in his office last Tuesday. Layton called for changes to the Conservatives' proposed environmental legislation at a meeting with the prime minister, and called for a "complete and comprehensive overhaul" of the bill. Since the federal government stepped in to take over the funding of the Mersey Hospital in Devonport, Tasmania, the state government and some federal MPs have been critical of the move, saying it was a stunt ahead of the November federal election. However, Prime Minister John Howard said the extra $45 million in Australian funding was designed to prevent the Tasmanian government from reducing the size of the hospital. According to latest reports, a tsunami has been triggered by the earthquake. Tremors have been felt in American Samoa and Niue. No major damage or injuries were reported in Tonga, but power was knocked out temporarily, possibly preventing tsunami warnings from being issued in time by the PTWC. As of Wednesday afternoon, fourteen schools on or near the coast in Hawaii were closed for the day due to the approaching storm. U.S. President George W. Bush welcomed the news. Bush spokesman Gordon Johndroe called the North Korean guarantee "an important step toward achieving the goal of the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula." Tenth Atlantic Hurricane Season's Tropical Depression Jerry Has Formed Over the Atlantic Ocean. As of now, Jerry is not expected to make landfall, the National Hurricane Center said. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers estimated that 6 inches of additional rainfall could breach previously damaged levees. In the Ninth Ward, which was inundated by as much as 20 feet of water during Hurricane Katrina, water is about waist-deep after the nearby levee broke. Water is overflowing on a 100-metre-wide stretch. Commons media licensing administrator Adam Cuerden expressed his frustration at the deleted media elements when speaking to Wikinews last month. They've been lying ever since. First they said it was because of the legal reasons, and then they said it was because they were listening to us. It was just their way to get rid of us. Community anger has led to the current efforts to create a policy governing sexual content on the site, which hosts millions of open-licensed media. Most of the work was theoretical, but the program was designed to simulate the observations made in the Sagittarius Galaxy. The effect the team was looking for would be caused by the gravity of the dark matter in the galaxy pulling on the Milky Way. Like the Moon's gravity causes tides on Earth, the Milky Way's gravity causes tides in Sagittarius. Scientists have concluded that dark matter affects other dark matter just as normal matter does. This theory suggests that most of the dark matter surrounding the galaxy is located in a halo, surrounding the galaxy, and is composed of many small particles. Television crews filmed thick white smoke billowing from the plant. Officials are telling residents living near the plant to stay inside, shut their air conditioners and not to drink tap water. Japan's nuclear agency says it has found cesium and iodine at the plant. Officials speculate that this may be an indication that the uranium fuel rods in the reactors are damaged and leaking. Dr. Tony Moll discovered extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. In an interview he said the new variant was "extremely concerning" and "must not be allowed to spread." Some patients at the hospital may have contracted the infection there, said Dr. Moll, at least two of them were health-care workers at the hospital. After a year, a single infected person can infect 10 or 15 of their immediate contacts. However, the proportion of XDR-TB in the total TB group remains low, at 6,000 of 330,000 people with TB in South Africa at a given time. Both satellites - each of which weighed more than 1,000 pounds and were traveling at about 17,500 miles per hour - crashed into Earth at an altitude of 491 miles. Scientists say the explosion created by the collision was massive. Scientists are still trying to determine the size of the collision and its effect on Earth. U.S. Strategic Command, which oversees the U.S. nuclear arsenal from its headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska, was tracking the test. The results of the analysis of the location will be published on a public website. A doctor who worked at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania is expected to be charged with murder in the death of his mother, whose body was found in a car trunk Wednesday, authorities in Ohio said. Dr. Malar Balasubramanian, 29, was found unconscious and alone, wearing only a shirt and underwear, on a street in the Blue Ash suburb of Cincinnati, about 15 miles north of the city. He walked over to his black Oldsmobile Intrigue, which was parked about 500 feet away. They found the body of 53-year-old Saroja Balasubramanian covered in blood-stained blankets. Police said the body had apparently been there for a day. The first cases of the illness this season were reported in late July. Pigs are carriers of the disease that is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. The outbreak has prompted the Indian government to take steps such as deploying pig hunters in severely affected areas, distributing thousands of mosquito nets and spraying pesticides. The government has promised several million doses of the injectable vaccine against encephalitis, which will ensure that the agencies are ready for the next rainy season. This year, immunization plans in the historically most-affected areas have been set back by funding shortfalls and low priority compared to other diseases. In 1956, Słania moved to Sweden, where he spent three years working for the Swedish Postal Service, eventually becoming the chief engraver. He has produced more than 1,000 stamps for Sweden and another 28 countries. His work is of such high quality and detail that he is a "name collector" among philatelists, and some specialise in collecting his work exclusively. His 1,000th stamp was the beautiful "Great Swedish Kings" by David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl in 2000, which is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. He has also designed banknotes for many countries; recent examples of his work include the portraits of Canadian prime ministers on the new $50 and $100 Canadian banknotes. Gibson was taken to hospital where he died a short time later. The lorry driver, 64, was unhurt in the collision. The vehicle was removed from the scene at about 12:00 BST on the same day. Fluke wrote that attempts by some to drown out women's voices speaking about women's health have been unsuccessful. He was led to this conclusion by the many positive comments and encouragement he received from men and women, urging him to make birth control medication a medical necessity. Following the riot and after the injured were taken to hospital, about 40 prisoners remained in the yard and refused to return to their cells. Negotiators have been trying to resolve the standoff, but the inmates' demands are not known. Between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. MDT on Tuesday, inmates set a fire in the outdoor recreation area. After that, riot officers entered the courtyard and fired tear gas at the inmates. Firefighters eventually got the blaze under control at about 11:35 p.m. Following the completion of the floodgates in 1963, the annual flooding that scoured the riverbed was no longer experienced. This sediment was necessary to create shorelines and beaches, which provided habitat for both flora and fauna. As a result, two fish species are now extinct and another two are endangered, including the Cyprinodon diabolis. Even though the water level will rise only by a few centimeters after the flood, officials are hopeful it will be enough to replenish the eroded river banks below. No tsunami warning has been issued and the geophysics agency in Jakarta said in a statement that none would be issued because the quake's magnitude was below 6.5. With no tsunami risk, residents began to panic and started leaving their homes and businesses. Top-ranked South Africa got off to a good start with a comfortable 26-0 win over No. 5 Zambia. South Africa may have been outplayed by their northern neighbours in a one-sided final, but they can at least take heart from the fact that they improved as the tournament progressed. Their well-disciplined defense, superior ball-handling, and great teamwork made them stand out, and it was obvious that they were the team to beat. Officials in Amsterdam and the Anne Frank Museum say the tree is infected with a fungus and is a danger to public safety. They say the tree is about to collapse. All of the cave entrances, collectively known as the "Seven Sisters", are between 100 and 250 metres (328 and 820 ft) wide. Infrared images show the temperature variations between day and night, which is consistent with caves. They're actually warmer than the ground around them during the day, and cooler at night. Its thermal behavior is not as stable as those of the large caves on Earth that often maintain a relatively constant temperature, but it is similar to that of a large pit in the ground," said Glen Cushing of the U.S. Geological Survey and Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz. Traditionally, voting in France has been a decidedly low-tech affair: Voters would go into a booth, fill out a printed ballot, and place it in a box. After election officials verify a voter's identity, the voter fills out the ballot and places it in the ballot box. French electoral law is very precisely codified. Since 1988, ballot boxes have been transparent so that voters and observers can see that there are no ballots in the box at the start of voting, and that there are no extra ballots added after eligible and authorized voters have been counted. Candidates can send representatives to observe all aspects of the process. By the night of the election, volunteers will count the ballots in the presence of observers, following special procedures. Rick Perry and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann placed fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. After the results were in, Gingrich praised Santorum but took aim at Romney over an Iowa advertisement that ran a negative campaign against Gingrich. Perry said he would "take a hard look at the results from tonight's caucus and see if there is a path forward for me in this race," although he later said he would continue in the race and appear at the Jan. 21 South Carolina primary. Bachmann, who won the Ames Straw Poll in August, decided to end her campaign. The photographer was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he later died. He was reportedly 20 years old at the time and in a statement, Bieber said, "While my heart breaks for the victim, I do not condone the senseless violence that took the life of an innocent human being." UN peacekeepers who have been stationed in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake have been accused of spreading a deadly cholera epidemic. According to the suit, waste generated at the U.N. camp was not properly sanitized, allowing bacteria to leach into the Artibonite River, one of Haiti's largest. Before the troops arrived, Haiti had not had a case of the disease since 1800. The Haitian Institute of Justice and Democracy cited independent studies that found the UN's Nepalese peacekeeping battalion knew it was bringing cholera to Haiti. Danielle Lantagne, a UNICEF expert on the disease, said the outbreak was probably caused by U.N. peacekeepers. Hamilton confirmed that Howard University Hospital was admitting the patient in stable condition. The patient was in Nixeria, where a number of Ebola virus cases have been reported. Both cyanuric acid and melamine were found in the urine of dogs that died after eating contaminated pet food. The two compounds interact to form crystals that can block kidney function, researchers at the university said. Researchers found that when they added melamine and cyanuric acid to cat food, crystals formed in the urine of the cats. The composition of these crystals matches what is found in petroglyphs when they are compared by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). I don't know if he's aware of this, but most of the goods from Central America that come into this country are free of tariffs. However, 80 percent of our goods were taxed at Central American customs. For me, it didn't make sense and it wasn't right. The only thing I would say to the other side is that we're going to treat them the same way that they've treated us. He was later transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge. Adekoya appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, charged with murdering his son. He is being remanded in custody ahead of a hearing and trial, but any evidence from witnesses could be tainted by the extensive coverage of his image. It is standard practice in the UK, but Scottish judges work in a different way and, following consideration by the courts, the publication of the photographs was deemed to be prejudicial. Prof Pamela Ferguson, of the University of Dundee, said: "Journalists seem to be following a dangerous line in publishing photographs, names and addresses of those suspected." The Crown Office, which is responsible for prosecutions, told reporters there would be no further comment - at least until charges are laid. The document, according to the leak, will be based on the Palestinians' demand to return to the pre-1967 Six-Day War borders. Other issues reportedly discussed include the future of Jerusalem, which is holy to both nations, and the value of the Jordan River. Israel is demanding a continuous military presence in the West Bank for at least ten years after the agreement is signed, while the PA has agreed to only five years. The marksmen on the trial's supplementary pest-control duty would be closely monitored by rangers during the trial and its effectiveness assessed. A partnership between the NPWS and the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. employed licensed volunteers under the Sporting Shooters Association shooting program. Mick O'Flynn, Park Conservation and Heritage Manager for NPWS, said: "The four volunteers have now been selected for the first operation of the guide and training in safety. Martelly has invested one month in the new Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) composed of nine members. It is Martelly's fifth provisional electoral council in four years. Last month, a presidential commission recommended that the Electoral Council (CEP) be resigned as part of a package to take the country to early elections. Martelly responded to the widespread protests against the government that began in October with the commission. The violent protesters have been enraged by the inability to hold elections, some of which have been postponed since 2011. There have been nearly 60 reports of iPod overheating, resulting in six fires and minor burns to four people. Japan's economy, trade and industry minister said there had been 27 reported accidents involving the devices. Last week, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced that Apple had reported an additional 34 cases of overheating, which the company considered "non-serious." The ministry said in a statement that it was "really regrettable" that Apple had postponed the release of the report. The quake hit Mariana at 07:19 am local time (2119 GMT Friday). The National Weather Service in the Northern Mariana Islands said no damage was reported in the country. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also reported no tsunami watches in effect. A Filipino former policeman has hijacked a bus carrying tourists from Hong Kong in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Rolando Mendoza shot the tourists with his M16 rifle. Many hostages were rescued and at least six people have been killed so far. Six hostages, including children and elderly people, were released for the first time, as well as Filipino photographers. Photographers later swapped places with an elderly woman who needed the toilet, and Mendoza was shot dead. Liggins followed in his father's footsteps and became a doctor. He trained as a general surgeon and started work at the National Women's Hospital in Auckland in 1959. Liggins began studying preterm births in his spare time while working in the hospital. His research showed that if the hormone was administered, lung maturation in the foetus would be accelerated. On Wednesday, government investigators recovered the two black boxes from the flight, Xinhua reported. Other fighters also paid tribute to Luna. Tommy Dreamer said, "Luna was the first "Extreme" Queen. My first representative. Luna died on the night of the two full moons. Something special, almost like her. A strong woman." Dustin "Goldust" Runnels said of Luna, "Luna was as rare as a diamond, perhaps more so... I loved her and I miss her, I hope she's in a better place." Of the 1400 people surveyed ahead of the 2010 federal election, the number who were against Australia becoming a republic increased by eight per cent from 2008. Former prime minister Julia Gillard argued during the 2010 federal election campaign that Australia should become a republic at the conclusion of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. Thirty-four per cent of respondents to the survey said they believed Queen Elizabeth II should be the last monarch of Australia. At the extremes of the survey, 29 per cent said Australia should become a republic at the earliest possible date, while 31 per cent said Australia should never become a republic. The Olympic gold medallist was due to swim the 100m and 200m freestyle at the Commonwealth Games and was also set to compete in three relays, but his participation is now in doubt. I can't take the medication I need to manage the pain because it's banned at the Games. On January 25, Curtis Cooper, a mathematician and professor of computer science at the University of Central Missouri, discovered the largest known prime number. Many people independently verified the discovery using different hardware and software by early February, which was reported on Tuesday. Comets may have been the source of water and organic material on Earth, including proteins necessary to support life. Scientists hope to gain insight into the process of planet formation, in particular how the Earth formed, since comets have been hitting the Earth for a very long time. Cuomo, 53, began his term as governor this year and signed a bill last month legalizing same-sex marriage. He called the reports "political gossip and hearsay." He is expected to run for president in 2016. NextGen is a system the FAA says will allow planes to fly more-efficient routes, save millions of gallons of fuel annually, and reduce carbon emissions. It replaces older radar-based technology with satellite-based technology, which allows air traffic controllers to pinpoint a plane's location more precisely and give pilots more accurate information. There is no extra buses and the Underground does not stop at Wembley; there is no off-site car and coach parking. The traveling concerns opened the door for the game to be played in an empty arena with just the home team's players in attendance. A study published in the journal Science on Thursday announced the discovery of a new bird species in the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador. Researchers from Princeton University in the US and Uppsala University in Sweden suggested the new species evolved in as little as two generations, although they believe the process took much longer due to hybridisation between the Darwin's finch and the cactus finch. Gold can be hammered into any shape. It can be rolled into a ball. It can be spun into a fine thread, which can be twisted or woven. It can also be hammered or rolled into sheets. It can be thinned down to a paste and mixed with other metals. Its thickness can be made so thin that it was used as a gesso for illuminated manuscripts, called "illuminations". This is called the pH of a chemical. A pH indicator can be made using the red cabbage. The solubility of a substance depends on its acidity or basicity (alkalinity). The solubility of a substance depends on its acidity or basicity (alkalinity). pH is a measure of the amount of hydrogen ions (H+) in a particular chemical. Hydrogen ions are the protons that have lost an electron (because hydrogen atoms consist of a proton and an electron). Mix the dry ingredients together, then add the wet ingredients and knead into a ball. The moisture in your hands will react with the outer layers, giving you a weird sensation and making your hands sticky. The cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-daro had a well in most houses, connected by a sophisticated sanitation system. Evidence of sewage systems has been found in the Minoan palaces of Crete and Akrotiri on Santorini in Greece. In ancient Egypt, Persia, and China, there were also public toilets. In ancient Rome, public toilets were often part of public baths, which were open to both men and women. When you call someone who is a thousand miles away, you are using a satellite. The satellite in space hears the call and immediately echos it back to Earth. A rocket launched the satellite into space. Scientists use telescopes in space because the atmosphere of Earth blocks some of the light and makes it hard to see. A giant rocket over 100 feet tall is needed to launch a satellite or a telescope into space. The wheel has changed the world in so many ways. The most important thing the wheel has given us is easy and fast transportation. By train, by car, and by many other means. Underneath them are more medium-sized predators, such as the spotted hyena and the striped hyena, which eat everything from dung beetles to antelopes and deer. Finally, many small cats (including free-ranging pet cats) eat a lot of small prey, such as insects, rodents, lizards, and birds. The secret to their success is the niche, a specialized job that every cat is assigned to and which prevents them from competing with each other. Lions are the most social of the cat species and live in large groups called prides. A clan may consist of one to three unrelated adult males, several dozen females, and perhaps as many as three dozen pups. Females are usually related to each other, as they are part of a large family of brothers and sisters. Lion kills are much like those of wolves or hyenas, other animals that are strikingly similar to lions in behavior but not to other large cats. A well-balanced tiger can swim, run long distances, and jump five times higher than an average human can. The tiger is a member of the same genus (Panthera) as the lion, leopard and jaguar, and is the only cat that can roar. A tiger's roar is not like a lion's roar, it is more like a sentence with words distorted by a growl. Ocelots prefer to eat small animals. They hunt monkeys, snakes, rodents, and birds, when they can. The animals that ocelots hunt are much smaller than the ocelots themselves. Scientists believe that cougars hunt and find prey (food) by using their sense of smell, tracking where their prey has been. They can see very well in the dark using their night vision, and are very graceful in their movements. The ocelots hunt their prey by crouching and pouncing upon them. When a small group of living things (a small population) separates from the main group to which it belongs (perhaps by crossing a mountain range or a river, or by migrating to a new island), they are likely to find themselves in a different environment from the one they left. This new boundary line has different resources and different capabilities, so the new population will need different features or adaptations to be a stronger competitor than they needed to be at that time. The native population has not changed at all; they still pursue the same adaptations as before. Over time, as the new population gets accustomed to their new environment, they also begin to look less like the rest of the population. Eventually, after thousands or even millions of years, the two populations will become so different that they will no longer be the same species. This process is called speciation, which simply means the formation of new species. Speciation is an inevitable and critical part of the evolutionary process. Plants make oxygen that we breathe and take in carbon dioxide that we exhale (breathe out). Plants make their food through photosynthesis. They also give shade. We build our houses with plants, we make our clothes out of them, and most of the food we eat comes from them. Without plants, most animals would not survive. The mosasaurus was the top predator of its time and was not afraid of anything, including other mosasaurs. Its long snout was adorned with more than 70 sharp teeth, and it had an additional pad on its lower jaw, which meant that nothing that came into its mouth ever escaped. We don't know for sure, but it may have had a double tongue. Its diet consisted of turtles, large fish, other mosasaurs, and possibly even cannibalism. It also attacked anything that came into the water; even a giant creature like the Tyrannosaurus rex would not have been safe from it. While most of their food would be familiar to us today, the Romans had an eclectic mix of exotic or unusual foods at their feasts, including peacock, wild boar, quails, and a type of rodent called a leaven. Another difference was that while the poor and women ate while seated on chairs, wealthy men would hold a feast and sit on their sides while eating. Ancient Rome's diet did not include foods from America or Asia that arrived in Europe in later centuries. For example, they did not have millet, tomatoes, cashews, or coconuts, and no Roman ever ate a turkey. The Babylonians built a temple for each of their gods that was considered the home of the deity. The people offered sacrifices to the gods and the priests tried to meet the needs of the gods through rituals and festivals. All of the temples have an open courtyard and then an inner sanctuary that is only accessible to the priests. Sometimes special pyramid-shaped towers, called ziggurats, were built and used as part of the temple complex. The top of the tower was a special sanctuary for the god. In the hot climate of the Middle East, houses were not important. Most Jewish families lived outdoors. Women cooked in the courtyard; shops were simply open counters facing the street, and stone was used to build houses. In the region of Canaan there were no great forests, and wood was very costly. Greenland is very sparsely populated. According to Norse sagas, Erik the Red was exiled from Iceland for murder and while sailing west he discovered a land which he called Greenland. Despite its discovery, the Eskimos had already been living there. Although all the countries were "Scandinavian", there were great differences between the peoples, kings, traditions, and history of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland. If you've seen the movie National Treasure, you might think the map to the Declaration of Independence is tattooed on the back of the document. This, however, is not correct. Though there may be something written on the back of the document, it is not a treasure map. On the back of the Declaration of Independence was written: "The original Declaration of Independence, dated the 4th of July, 1776." The text was written below the document, upside down. Although no one knows for certain who wrote it, it is known from early in its existence that the document was kept in a large scrolled parchment (29 3/4 by 24 1/2 inches). Thus, that notation may simply have been added as a tag. D-Day and the battles that followed it liberated northern France, but southern France remained under German occupation. It was under French "Vichy" rule. These were Frenchmen who in 1940 made peace with the Germans and worked with the occupiers rather than fighting them. On August 15, 1940, the Allies invaded southern France, code named Operation Dragoon. In just two weeks the Americans and the Free French had pushed the Germans back into southern France. A civilization is a unique culture shared by a large group of people living and working together: a society. The word civilization is derived from the Latin word civilis, meaning civil, and civitas, meaning city or city-state. It is also associated with the size of a society. Cities are the birthplaces of nations. A civilized culture is one that passes knowledge from one generation to another, leaves a lasting cultural heritage, and is widely disseminated. Smaller civilizations often leave little or no historical record, and are not recognized as civilizations in their own right. During the American Revolutionary War, the Thirteen Colonies created a weak central government (consisting of Congress alone) under the Articles of Confederation. The Congress was unable to impose taxes, and without a national executive or judiciary to enforce its laws, it relied on state officials, who often refused to cooperate. He had no power to invalidate tax laws or to set rates between the states. Articles required the unanimous approval of all the states in order to be changed, but the states took it upon themselves so loosely that their representatives were often absent. The Italian national team, along with the German one, is the second most successful in the world and was the FIFA World Cup champion in 2006. Some popular sports include football, basketball, volleyball, water polo, fencing, rugby, cycling, ice hockey, roller hockey, and Formula 1 racing. Winter sports are more popular in the northern regions, while Italians compete in international games and Olympic events. Japan is an archipelago of over 7,000 islands (the largest of which is Honshu), and is the world's seventh-largest island country. Because of the group of islands it comprises, Japan is often geographically referred to as an "archipelago". Early European explorers called Taiwan "Beautiful Island" in the 16th century. In 1624, the Dutch East India Company established a base in the southwest of Taiwan, and introduced sugarcane and manpower from China to work on their sugar and rice plantations, marking the beginning of large-scale sugar production. In 1683, the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912) took control of the western and northern coastal regions of Taiwan, and in 1885 they declared the island a province of the Qing Empire. Following its defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–95), the Qing government signed the Shimonoseki Treaty in 1895, ceding sovereignty over Taiwan to Japan, which governed the island until 1945. Machu Picchu has three main structures: the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun and the Room of the Three Windows. Most of the buildings on the edge of the complex have been reconstructed in order to give visitors an idea of what they looked like originally. By 1976, 30 percent of Machu Picchu had been restored, and work continues to this day. For example, 35 mm film size is much more common in the world of photography than standard 35 mm film size, which was the standard film size at the end of the era of analog photography. This is still done today, but what is more important is the aspect ratio that was inherited by digital camera sensors from the days of analogue photography. 35 mm film, made even more confusingly, is 36 by 24 mm. Thus, this aspect ratio (obtained by dividing by 12) is 3:2. Standard formats (e.g. those in the APS family) are the same or very close to this aspect ratio. The over-used and often ridiculous thirds rule is simply a guideline that creates dynamic tension while still maintaining some semblance of order. It states that the most effective position for the main subject is at the intersection of the lines dividing the image into thirds vertically and horizontally (see example). During this period in European history, the Roman Catholic Church, which had become rich and powerful, was put under the microscope. For a thousand years, Christianity has united European states despite their differences in language and customs. His dominance in all aspects of life affected everyone from the king to the peasant. One of the most basic principles of Christianity is that wealth is to be used to relieve suffering, and that church funds are for that purpose. For a thousand years, the central authority of the church was in Rome, and this concentration of power and wealth led many to question whether the church was being true to its mission. Immediately after the start of hostilities, Britain began a naval blockade of Germany. The strategy has been effective in cutting off vital civilian and military supplies, though it has violated international law codified by many international agreements over the past two decades. Britain has sown mines in international waters to prevent ships from entering entire ocean areas, endangering even neutral vessels. Because of the limited response to this approach, Germany expected a similar response to its unrestricted submarine warfare. During the 20s, pacifism and isolationism were the prevailing mindsets among most citizens and nations. After bearing witness to the horrors and atrocities of World War I, many nations sought to avoid a similar situation in the future. In 1884, Tesla moved to the United States, where he accepted a job with the Edison Company in New York City. He arrived in the U.S. with four cents in his pocket, a book of poems, and a letter from his last employer, Charles Batchelor, recommending him to Thomas Edison. In ancient China, there was a unique method of distinguishing different periods of time; every dynasty in Chinese history or any family that came to rule was given a distinct period. In addition, between each of the succeeding dynasties was a period of disunity among the provinces. The most well-known of these periods is the Three Kingdoms era, which lasted for 60 years from the end of the Han dynasty to the beginning of the Jin dynasty. During these periods of time, there was a vicious war between various noble families who tried to gain the throne. The Three Kingdoms is one of the bloodiest periods in Chinese history, with thousands of people dying in battles to claim the throne in the grand Xi'an palace. It had many social and political consequences; for example, the use of the metric system, the passing from absolutism to republicanism, nationalism and the belief that the country belongs to the people and not to a single ruler. After the revolution, admissions were opened to all male applicants, which allowed the most ambitious and determined to succeed. The same is true of the military, where rank is now based on size rather than class. The French Revolution also inspired many other working class people in other countries to start their own revolutions. Muhammad had a great interest in matters concerning the Hereafter. He often went to a cave which came to be known as "Hirana" on the mountain of "Noor" (light) for meditation. The same cave, which has survived the passing of time, provides a vivid insight into the spiritual beliefs of Muhammad. Perched on top of a mountain in Mecca, the cave is completely isolated from the rest of the world. Indeed, it is not easy to find out if someone knows it exists at all. In the cave, it is completely dark. There is nothing to see here but the beautiful sky above the many surrounding mountains. Most of this world can not be seen or heard from inside the cave. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the World that still exists today. Built in the 3rd century BCE as a funerary monument for a pharaoh, the Great Pyramid is one of several large pyramids built in ancient Egypt. The Giza Plateau or "Necropolis of Giza" in Egypt contains many pyramids (the Great Pyramid being the largest), many tombs, several temples, and the Great Sphinx. The Great Pyramid was built for Pharaoh Khufu, while most of the other pyramids, tombs, and temples were built for Khufu's wives and family members. The "top hat" mark looks like a V, while the "flapper" mark resembles a triangle or square that is missing its lower half. Top hand means to start from the tip and draw the bow, while bottom hand means to start from the heel (where the hand holds the bow) and pull the bow. The normal upward bow produces a softer sound than the downward bow, which is more intense and assertive. You can write your own notation, but don't forget that the printed notes on the staff are there for a musical reason and should be taken into account. On October 6, 1789, a mob of market women forced King Louis XVI, Queen Marie Antoinette, their two young children (11-year-old Marie-Thérèse and 4-year-old Louis-Charles), and the king's sister, Madame Isabel, to return to Paris from Versailles. They returned to Paris on a train surrounded by a hostile crowd shouting abuse at the king and queen. The people made the King and the Queen open the car windows. At one point, a member of the mob ripped off the head of a Royal Guard beheaded at Versailles and held it up for a queen to see. American imperialism in the Philippines was paid for by the Filipino people. They had the obligation to pay taxes to the U.S. colonial regime in order to finance most of the expenditures and the interest payments on the loans issued in the name of the Philippine government by the Wall Street banks. Of course, the extraordinary benefits from the long exploitation of the Filipino people would be the basic achievements of US imperialism. To understand the Templars, it is necessary to understand the context in which the order was created. The era in which these events took place is commonly referred to as the High Middle Ages, the period of European history from the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries (A.D. 1000–1300). The Middle Ages were preceded by the High Middle Ages and followed by the Late Middle Ages, which are usually taken to have ended around 1500. Technological determinism is a broad concept that encompasses a range of ideas in practice, from the technological imperative or technological push to a strict sense that human destiny is determined by an underlying logic of science and its expression in technology. Many of the interpretations of technological determinism share two main ideas: that the development of technology is independent of cultural or political influences, and that technology has "effects" on society that are inherent rather than socially constructed. For example, you could say that the invention of the internal combustion engine led to the development of roads. However, a national network of charging points is not economically viable for a motley collection of cars, so new methods of production are designed to reduce the cost of owning a car. Mass ownership of cars also led to an increase in road accidents, which gave rise to the invention of new medical techniques to repair injured bodies. Romanticism contains an important cultural determinism element, coming from writers like Goethe, Fichte and Schlegel. In the context of Romanticism, geography shaped individuals, and over time, customs and culture associated with that geography, the valleys, because they were in harmony with the place of that society, were better than the laws imposed arbitrarily. As Paris is known as the fashion capital of the modern world, Constantinople was considered the fashion capital of medieval Europe. Its sound as the music of the wealthy began around 400 A.D. and lasted to about 1100 A.D. Its status had declined by the 12th century, in part because of the Crusaders' return from the East with silk and spices which were more highly regarded than anything the Byzantine markets could provide. This was also the time when the title of the fashion capital changed from Constantinople to Paris. The Gothic style was at its zenith between the 10th or 11th century and the 14th century. At first, clothing was greatly influenced by Byzantine culture in the East. However, due to the time it took for news to travel by ship, Western styles were about 25 to 30 years behind. By the later Middle Ages, Western Europe had begun to develop its own style. One of the great innovations of the Crusades was the use of buttons to fasten clothes. Subsistence farming is farming for the sole purpose of providing enough food for the farmer and his family. Subsistence farming is a simple, organic farming system using native seeds from the region, combined with crop rotation or other simple techniques to maximize yields. Traditionally, farmers were engaged in subsistence farming, and this is still the case in many developing countries. Subcultures are groups of individuals with similar mindsets who feel ignored by society standards and help them gain a sense of identity. Subcultures can be distinguished by age, ethnicity, class, location, and/or gender. The qualities that distinguish a subculture may be linguistic, aesthetic, religious, political, sexual, geographic, or some combination of those factors. Members of a subculture often express their affiliation through a distinctive and symbolic use of style, including clothing, behavior, and jargon. One of the most common methods used to illustrate the importance of socialization is to look at the few unfortunate cases of birds that, through neglect, abuse, or deliberate mistreatment, were not socialized by their parents as they grew up. These birds are either called "wild" or "feral". Some wild birds have been reared by humans (often by their own parents); in some cases, abandonment of these birds is due to the parents' rejection of their serious intellectual or physical disability. Wild children may have experienced serious abuse or trauma before being abandoned or running away. Others were said to have been raised by animals, and some were isolated from civilization. When raised by non-human animals, feral young will exhibit behaviors (within the bounds of their physical abilities) which are nearly identical to those of the particular animal who cared for them, whether it be fear or indifference toward humans. While project-based learning should make learning easier and more interesting, the statistics go further. Coaching is not a method of learning, but a support to individuals who are going through a new learning experience, such as using a new computer program, or starting a new project. States can be either virtual or real, e.g. the master or mistress is a state, but so is the paper clip in Microsoft Office. Virtual labs are software-based, and their purpose is to question, provoke, and explain procedures that might otherwise be difficult to tackle alone. Children are referred to care for a wide range of reasons including neglect and abuse to drug and alcohol misuse. No child - boy or girl - should ever be raised in an environment that is not nurturing, affectionate, and educational, but it does happen. We viewed the foster care system as a safety net for that population of children. It is assumed that our foster care system provides safe homes, loving caregivers, stable education, and reliable medical attention. The foster care system is designed to provide all of the things that are missing when a child is removed from their home. The Internet combines elements of both mass communication and interpersonal communication. The unique features of the Internet have led to additional dimensions in the understanding of agency and gratification. For example, "learning" and "socialization" are important motivations for Internet use (James et al., 1995). Eighmey and McCord (1998) also identified "personal involvement" and "continuous relations" as new motivations when they studied reactions to web sites. The use of video recordings led to fundamental discoveries in the understanding of micro expressions, facial movements lasting a thousandth of a second. In particular, it is asserted that it is possible to read the mind of a person by correctly understanding the micro expressions. In his article The President's Speech, Oliver Sacks explained how people who are unable to understand speech because of brain damage are still able to tell when someone is being insincere. These skills in understanding human behaviour may even be shared with other animals, such as pet dogs. Genetic research in the 20th century led to the discovery of two types of gene variation: hidden and expressed. A mutation introduces a new gene variant and selection removes the set of variants expressed. The segregation and recombination of alleles above and below each of the two reservoirs in each generation. In the savanna, it would be hard for a primate with a digestive system more like that of a human to get enough essential amino acids from the available plants. In addition, not doing so has serious consequences: depression, malnutrition and ultimately death. The most easily accessible trace minerals would be the proteins in leafy greens and legumes, but these are hard for primates like us to get enough of unless they are cooked. In contrast, animal foods (insects, termites, eggs) are easy to pronounce and provide all essential amino acids in abundant protein. Considering all of this, it should not surprise us that our ancient ancestors solved their "protein problem" in much the same way that chimpanzees in the savannah do today. Daytime napping is the intentional act of falling asleep during normal waking hours and then waking up a short time later (between 10 and 60 minutes). This can easily be done using a reasonably quiet buzzer to bring the dreamer back to consciousness without fully waking up. If you find that your alarm is off when it should be on, try moving it to the other end of the room so that you are forced to get out of bed to switch it off. Other options based on circadian rhythms include drinking lots of fluids (preferably water or tea, a well-known diuretic) right before bed, forcing you to wake up to use the bathroom. The amount of inner peace that a person has is inversely proportional to the amount of tension in their body and mind. The lesser the tension, the more positive will be the vital force present. Every person has the potential to find complete peace and satisfaction. Everyone can achieve the state of enlightenment. The only obstacle standing between us and that goal is our own tension and negativity. Tibetan Buddhism originated from the teachings of the Buddha, but these were extended by the Mahayana path of love and by many yoga techniques from India. At its core, Tibetan Buddhism is quite simple. It is comprised of yoga, meditation, and the path to enlightenment. Through Kundalini yoga, Kundalini energy (creative life force) is activated through yoga postures, breathing exercises, mantras, and visualization. The center of Tibetan Buddhist meditation is the deity Yoga. Through visualization of the various deities, the energy channels, the chakras react and enlightened consciousness is created. Germany was a common enemy in World War II, which led to cooperation between the USSR and the U.S. post-war ideological, process and cultural clashes led to disagreements between the countries. Two years after the end of the war, former allies had become enemies, and the Cold War began. It would last for the next couple of centuries and was actually fought by professional soldiers in battles from Africa to Asia, in Afghanistan, Cuba, and other places. By 17 September 1939, the Polish defense was already broken, and the only hope was to retreat and reorganize behind the Romanian bridgehead. However, these plans became obsolete within a day or two, when 800,000 Soviet Red Army soldiers entered and created the Belarusian and Ukrainian fronts, after having invaded eastern Poland in violation of the Riga Peace Treaty, the Russo-Polish Non-Aggression Pact, and other international treaties, both bilateral and multilateral. Using ships to transport goods is by far the most efficient way to transport large amounts of people and cargo across the ocean. Traditionally, the function of the military has been to ensure that the country is able to move both people and goods while interfering with the enemy's ability to do the same. One of the most notable recent examples of this was the Atlantic Campaign of World War II. The United States sought to transport men and supplies across the Atlantic Ocean to help Britain. Meanwhile, the German Navy, mainly using its U-boats, tried to stop the traffic. If Germany's allies had failed, Germany would have conquered Britain just as they had conquered the rest of Europe. Domestication of sheep is believed to have taken place about 10,000 years ago in the Zagros Mountains of Iran. Ancient cultures and tribes began domesticating these animals for easy access to milk, wool, meat, and hide. Domestic sheep generally were kept in flocks that moved about open country, often under the supervision of a shepherd, a practice that is still common today. The "waggonways" (carriages drawn by horses) were built in England as early as the 16th century. Although wooden planks laid side by side made up the first railways (known as wagonways), they allowed horses to travel more quickly and carry heavier loads than the more primitive roads of the time. Trusses were put in early to hold the road in place, but it became apparent over time that the road would be much more effective with a steel beam on top. This became standard practice, but it was hard on the wooden wheels of the carriages. Eventually wooden wheels were replaced by iron ones. The first all-iron wheels were introduced in 1767. The first known method of transportation was walking upright, about two million years ago when the first homo erectus (upright man) appeared. Its predecessor, the Australopithecus, did not walk upright like we do today. The specialization of bipedalism dates from about 4.2 to 3.9 million years ago in the fossils of Australopithecus, though the Sahelanthropus may have been bipedal as early as seven million years ago. We can start living in a more respectful way towards the environment, we can join a movement to defend the environment and even become an activist to reduce future suffering to some degree. In many cases, it is simply a treatment of the symptoms. However, if you don't want a temporary solution, then you should try to find the root of the problem and fix it. It can't be denied that the world has changed considerably as a result of the advances made by the human race in science and technology, and problems have increased due to overpopulation and the human way of life. After Congress adopted it on July 4, 1776, a copy of the draft was sent by hand to the President of Congress, John Hancock, and the Secretary, Charles Thomson, for review about a mile away at John Dunlap's print shop. That same night, between 150 and 200 copies were printed, now known as the "Dunlap broadsides". The first public reading of the document was given by John Nixon on the steps of Independence Hall on July 8. A copy was sent to George Washington on July 6 and read to his troops in New York on July 9. A second copy was sent to London on August 10. Of Dunlap's 25 broadsides, these are the earliest surviving copies of the document. The original broadside is lost. Some paleontologists today believe that a group of dinosaurs survived to this day. They are called birds. Many people do not consider them to be dinosaurs even though they had feathers and could fly. These birds have many features still similar to those of the dinosaurs. They have scaly feet and claws, lay eggs, and walk on two legs like a Tyrannosaurus rex. Today, nearly all computers work by representing information in the form of binary numbers. A binary number can have only one of two values, namely 0 or 1. These numbers are called binary digits or bits in computer jargon. Internal poisoning may not be immediately obvious. Symptoms, such as vomiting, are so nonspecific that a quick diagnosis is not possible. The most obvious sign of internal poisoning is an open container of medications or household poisons. Follow the instructions on the label for first aid for that particular poison. Entomologists use the formal term bug for this group of insects. The word is derived from the classical familiarity with lice, insects which have a great capacity to adapt to parasitism of humans. Both male and female lice are parasites, and are adapted to living on a single host, either human or another animal. Across the United States, there are approximately 400,000 known cases of multiple sclerosis (MS), making it the most common neurological disease of young adults and middle-aged individuals. Multiple sclerosis is a disease that affects the central nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. The research showed that women are twice as likely to suffer from multiple sclerosis than men. A couple may decide that it is not in their interest, nor in the best interests of the child, to have a child. These couples can choose an adoption plan for their baby. In an adoption, biological parents give up their parental rights, and another couple may take in the child or the child may be placed in foster care. The goal of science is to determine the nature of the world through scientific methods. This methodology, in fact, forms the basis for most scientific research. It is not only through experimentation, but the experiment is a test of one or more hypotheses, and questions and observations lead to scientific investigation. Naturalists and philosophers focused on classical texts, especially the Latin Bible. Aristotle's opinion was accepted in all matters relating to science, including psychology. As the knowledge of the Greeks declined in the west, western civilization separated itself from its philosophical and scientific roots. Many rhythms observed in physiology and behavior are dependent on the presence of endogenous cycles and their production by biological clocks. Most living things, including bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals, exhibit regular rhythmic patterns that are not responses to periodic environmental cues. Biological clocks are self-sustaining oscillators that will keep ticking away without any external input. Hershey and Chase's experiment was one of the pieces of evidence leading to the suggestion that DNA is genetic material. Hershey and Chase used bacteriophages, or viruses, to get their own DNA into bacterial cells. They conducted two experiments in which either the bacteriophage's DNA was labelled with radioactive phosphorus, or its protein was labelled with radioactive sulfur. Mutations can have many different effects depending on their class, the significance of the affected gene, and whether the affected cells are progenitor or differentiated. Only mutations in germ cells can be passed on to offspring, while mutations in other areas can cause cell death or cancer. Nature tourism is interested in people who want to visit nature areas to enjoy landscapes, also flora and fauna. Examples of on-site activities include hunting, fishing, bird watching, park visits, and ecosystem studies. For example, visit, photograph, and learn about orangutans in Borneo. Every morning, people from small rural towns would drive to work, pass each other going to the same place they just came from. This dynamic ride-hailing service connects riders around the world and supports private vehicle-based transportation. Science today tells us that this massive carbon-based economy is changing one of the stable states of the biosphere that has supported human evolution for the past two million years. We all participate in society, and we all use the transportation system. Everyone around the world complains about the transportation system. In developed countries, you rarely hear similar levels of complaints about the quality of the water or bridges collapsing. Why do transport systems generate so many complaints? Why do they fail so often? Are transport engineers simply incompetent, or is there some more fundamental problem? Traffic flow is the study of how cars and other motorized vehicles move from one place to another and interact with each other. Unfortunately, traffic flow is hard to study because driver behavior cannot be predicted with 100% certainty. Fortunately, drivers are reasonably predictable, so traffic flows are reasonably regular and can be approximated mathematically. To gain a better understanding of traffic flow, relations were established between its three main characteristics: (1) flow, (2) density and (3) speed. These relationships help to plan and design traffic operations. Insects were the first to take to the air. Their ability to fly meant that they could escape from predators, find food more efficiently, and attract mates. Most insects can fold their wings back against the body. This will give them a wider range of small places to hide from predators. Today, the only insects that cannot fold their wings are the dragonflies and damselflies. About a thousand years ago, a man named Aristarchus said that the Solar System went around the Sun. Some people thought he was right, but most people disagreed; the Solar System, including the Sun (and the other stars) went around the Earth. It's intuitive, right? The Earth doesn't seem to be moving, does it? The Amazon is the second longest, and has the largest volume of water of any river on Earth, discharging 8 times more water than the world's second largest river. The Amazon is also the widest river on Earth, at six miles across. Twenty percent of all the world's fresh water that flows into the oceans comes from the Amazon. The main river of the Amazon is 6,387 km (3980 miles) long. It gathers water from thousands of smaller rivers. Although stone pyramids were built right up to the end of the Old Kingdom, they were never as large as those at Giza, nor as technically sophisticated in their construction. The new regime desecrated the tombs of the old kings, some of which were more than a thousand years old. The population of the Vatican City is around 800 people, and it is the smallest independent country in the world by population. Vatican City has Italian as the official language for its legislation and official communications. Italian is also the language spoken by most of the people working in the state, while Latin is often used in religious ceremonies. All citizens of the Vatican are Roman Catholics. Humans have known the basic chemical elements gold, silver, and copper from antiquity, as they occur in nature and can be extracted from it using primitive tools. Philosopher Aristotle theorized that all matter was composed of one or more of the four elements: earth, water, air, and fire. This was similar to the four states of matter (in the same order): solid, liquid, gas, and plasma, but also the theory that they can be transformed into new stuff that makes up everything we see. Alloys are basically a mixture of two or more materials. Don't forget that the periodic table contains many elements. Elements like calcium and potassium are metals. Of course there are other metals like silver and gold. Some alloys also include small amounts of non-metallic elements, such as carbon. Everything in the universe is made of matter, and all matter is made of tiny particles called atoms. Atoms are so small that trillions of them can fit into the period at the end of this sentence. Thus, the pencil became a good friend of many people at the time of its invention. Unfortunately, with the introduction of new methods of writing, the pencil was relegated to inferior status and uses. Nowadays people send messages on their computers without ever touching a keyboard or mouse. We can only imagine what the keyboard will look like when something new comes along to replace it. The nuclear fission reactor works on the principle that it takes energy to force a nucleus with many protons and neutrons together. It's like trying to push a heavy car uphill. When you break the nucleus apart, some of that energy is released. Some atoms have unstable nuclei, which means that they tend to break down if you hit them with a little bit of energy. The moon's surface is covered in rocks and soil. The outer layer of the moon is called the regolith. The crust is approximately 70 km (40 mi) thick at its thinnest point and 100 km (60 mi) thick at its thickest point. It's thinner under the sea and thicker on land. There might be more magma closer to the surface on the near side, because the crust is thinner. It would be easier for the lava to come up. Theories about content tend to focus on what motivates people or what they find attractive. These theories suggest that people have certain needs and desires that are internalized when they become adults. These theories study what makes people want to do certain things, and what makes them do or not do certain things. Two popular theories of motivation are Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theory and Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory. In general, two types of behaviors can be observed when former peers become leaders. On one extreme, they may try to remain "one of the guys" (or gals). These managers have a hard time making unpopular decisions, giving out discipline, assessing performance, allocating responsibilities, and holding people accountable. On the other hand, he becomes an individual no one recognizes, and he believes he has to change everything that made the team successful and made it his own. After all, the captain is the last person responsible for the success or failure of the team. This behavior often creates a rift between leaders and the rest of the team. Virtual teams function at the same levels of excellence as conventional teams, but there are some differences. Virtual team members often serve as a proxy for physical teammates. They are likely to be more independent than conventional team members, since their teammates can be in other time zones, and this may be something that the national coach does not understand. The presence of a true "invisible team" (Larson and LaFasto, 1989, p. 109) is also a unique characteristic of virtual teams. Your "invisible team" is the group of people you answer to, and your "invisible team" sets standards for everyone on it. Why would you want a learning organization to go through the slow process of establishing an organization that promotes learning? One of the goals of becoming a learning organization is innovation. When all available resources are used effectively by all departments in a company, creativity and ingenuity can flourish. Thus, the process of a company that works together to overcome an obstacle can create a new process of innovation that is responsive to the customer's needs. Before an organization can be innovative, leadership must create a culture of innovation, and share knowledge and learning across the organization. Angel (2006) explains the continuous approach as a methodology used to help organizations achieve a higher level of performance. Neurobiological data provides physical evidence to support theoretical research into cognition, thus reducing the scope of the research and making it more precise. The correlation between brain pathology and behavior supports the scientists' research. It has long been known that a variety of brain damage, trauma, lesions, and tumors can affect behavior and impair certain mental functions. The application of new technologies has allowed us to see and investigate brain structures and processes in a way that was never possible before. This provides an abundance of information and material that can be used to build simulation models to help us understand the process in our mind. While AI has strong science fiction overtones, it is a branch of computer science which studies the behavior, learning, and adaptation of intelligent machines. Artificial intelligence research seeks to produce machines that can automatically perform tasks that would normally require intelligent behavior. Examples include controlling, planning, and scheduling, being able to respond to patient questions and concerns, and knowing how to read, write, and speak. These things have become separate disciplines, and they try to give solutions to real-life problems. Artificial intelligence is now widely utilized in the fields of economics, medicine, engineering, and military, and has been integrated into numerous consumer software applications and video games. Tours are an important part of any course, and often teachers will be keen to take their students to places that are inaccessible by bus. Technology offers a solution in the form of virtual field trips. Students can see museum exhibits, visit an aquarium, or admire beautiful works of art, all from their desks. Taking a virtual field trip can also be a great way to reflect on the expedition and to share experiences with other classes in the future. For example, students at North Carolina's Bennet School create a website about their annual trip to the state capital; the website is redesigned every year, but the old ones are kept online to act as an album. Blogs can also help students improve their writing. While students often start blogging with poor grammar and spelling, the presence of an audience will generally encourage them to improve. As students, we are often the most critical audience, so the blog editor would have been keen to improve his writing and avoid criticism. Also, maintaining a blog "forces students to learn more about the world around them." The need to engage the audience and interest the readers motivates students to showcase their intelligence and be interesting (Toto, 2004). Blogs are a tool that encourages collaboration and can engage students in learning beyond traditional school hours. A savvy use of blogs "can empower students to become more analytical and critical; by offering an active response to online materials, students can take a stance on issues and develop their own views on particular topics (Oravec, 2002). Ottawa is Canada's bilingual capital with an array of art galleries and museums to explore the country's past and present. To the south are the Niagara Falls and to the north is the unspoiled natural beauty of Muskoka and beyond. All of these things, and many more, are why Ontario is considered by foreigners to be intrinsically Canadian. Much of the country to the north is sparsely populated, and many areas are virtually uninhabited. Here's a number that will surprise many people: There are more African Americans living in the U.S. than there are Canadian citizens. East Africa or Eastern Africa is the easternmost region of the African continent, which includes Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Somalia. Madagascar is by far the largest of the islands, a full-fledged continent in terms of its flora and fauna. Most of the smaller islands are independent nations or French overseas territories, well-known for their luxury beach resorts. Arabs also brought Islam to the region, which became entrenched in Comoros and Mayotte. European exploration and colonialism began in the 15th century with the discovery of the sea route from Europe to India by Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. The region borders the Sahel to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the South Atlantic Ocean to the south. Women: Tell women visiting here to say they are married, even if they are not. A wedding band (not too expensive-looking) can also be useful. Women should be aware that cultural differences may be perceived as harassment, and that they may be pursued, grabbed, etc. Stand up to men when they disrespect you, and never be afraid to speak your mind (even if it's different from theirs, it's not acceptable!). The modern city of Casablanca was founded by Berber sailors in the 10th century, and was used by Phoenicians, Romans, and Merinids as a strategic port called Anfa. The Portuguese destroyed it and rebuilt it as the White House, but eventually abandoned it after the 1755 earthquake. The Moroccan sultan rebuilt the city, naming it Daru l-Badya, and Spanish traders established a trading post there, which they called Casablanca. Casablanca is one of the least interesting places to shop in all of Morocco. In and around the old medina there are many shops selling traditional Moroccan items, such as tagines, pottery, leatherware, "hookahs" and a wide range of tourist souvenirs. Goma is a city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, near Rwanda. In 2002, lava from Nyiragongo volcano destroyed Goma and most of the city's streets, especially in the center. While Goma is relatively safe, any visiting outside the city should be researched to understand the ongoing conflict in the North Kivu province. The city is also a base for visiting Nyiragongo Volcano, and is one of the cheapest places to track mountain gorillas in Africa. Taxis (mototaxis) called boda-boda can be used to get around Goma. A normal (local) price for this short trip is around 500 Congolese francs. In addition to its relative inaccessibility, the name Timbuktu in English has become an archetype for exotic and remote places. Today, Tombouctou is a very poor city, but its reputation makes it a tourist attraction, and it has an airport. In 1990, it was placed on the World Heritage in Danger List due to the threat posed by the encroaching desert. He was featured in Henry Louis Gates's PBS special, Wonders of the African World. The city offers a dramatic contrast to the rest of the country, being more Arabic or African in atmosphere. The Kruger National Park (KNP) is located in the northwest of South Africa, and is bounded by Mozambique to the east, Zimbabwe to the north and the Crocodile River to the south. The park consists of 19,500 km2 (7,500 sq mi) and contains 14 different ecoregions, each with its own unique flora and fauna. It is one of South Africa's most popular attractions and is considered the flagship of the South African National Parks (SANParks). Like other national parks in Southern Africa, there are daily conservation and park entrance fees. A Wildcard may also be a good idea, which will give you access to either a selection of South African parks, or all of the South African National Parks. The island of Hong Kong gives its name to the entire territory, and is where most visitors go. The skyscrapers that define the Hong Kong skyline have been likened to a shimmering bar chart, thanks to the waters of Victoria Harbour. For the best views of Hong Kong, head across the harbour to Kowloon on the opposite side of the island. Most of Hong Kong's new development is taking place on land reclaimed from the sea along the north coast. British colonialists made this place their home, so if you are interested in exploring the colonial history of the land, this is a good place to start. The Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest in the world, covering 80 km (50 miles) along the coasts of Bangladesh and India. The Sundarbans is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a national park in India. The forests are not just mangrove swamps: they contain some of the last vestiges of the once-impressive jungles that clothed the Ganges-Brahmaputra basin. The Sundarbans covers an area of 3,850 km2, of which approximately one third is water, mangroves, and marshes. Since 1966, Sundarbans has been a tiger and crocodile sanctuary, and today there are estimated to be 400 Bengal tigers and 30,000 crocodiles there. Buses ply the inter-district bus station (across the river) constantly throughout the day, but most, especially those to the east (Jakar/Bumthang) leave between 06:30 and 07:30. As buses between districts are often full, it is best to book your seat in advance. Most districts are served by small Japanese Coaster buses, which are comfortable and sturdy. Taxis are a quick and comfortable way to get around, e.g. to Paro (150 Nu) and Punakha (200 Nu). The Oyapock River Bridge is dramatic. The bridge crosses the Oyapock River to connect the Brazilian town of Oiapoque with Saint-Georges de l'Oyapock, French Guiana. Both towers are 83 metres high, the bridge is 378 metres long with two 3.5 metre wide lanes. The arch beneath the bridge is 15 metres high. Its final construction was completed in August 2011, but it did not open to traffic until March 2017. The bridge is expected to be fully operational by September 2017, when Brazilian customs controls are expected to be completed. The Guarani were the most important indigenous group to inhabit what is now eastern Paraguay; they were nomadic hunter-gatherers who also practiced some subsistence agriculture. The Chaco region was home to other Native American tribes, such as the Wichita and the Payaguá, who survived by hunting, gathering, and fishing. In the 16th century, present-day Paraguay, then known as the "Giant Province of the Indies", was a meeting place between Spanish conquerors and indigenous groups. The Spanish colonial period lasted for three centuries. Since the founding of Asunción in 1537, Paraguay has largely maintained its indigenous character and identity. Argentina is famous for having one of the best polo players, and teams, in the world. The most important tournament of the year takes place in December, at the Las Cañadas Polo Club. During other parts of the year, minor tournaments and matches can also be viewed here. For information on tournaments and where to buy tickets for polo matches, visit the Argentine Polo Association. The official currency of the Falkland Islands is the Falkland Island pound (abbreviated FKP), which is fixed at a rate of 1:1 with the British pound sterling (GBP). Money can be exchanged at one bank on the island, which is located in Stanley, across from the FIC West store. Pound sterling is widely accepted in all of the islands, and US dollars and major credit cards are also accepted in Stanley. In the outer islands, credit cards are unlikely to be accepted, even though U.S. and British money is. Check with your hosts in advance as to what is the acceptable method of payment. It is next to impossible to change money outside of the Falkland Islands, so it would be best to change your money before departing. When it is winter in the northern hemisphere, it is summer in Montevideo, which is south of the equator. Montevideo has a subtropical climate; in the summer, temperatures above 30 °C (86 °F) are common. Winter can be deceptively cold, with temperatures almost never below freezing, but wind and humidity make it feel colder than it is. There is no such thing as a "rainy" or "dry" season - precipitation remains high throughout the year. While most of the park's animals are accustomed to the presence of humans, they are still wild animals and should not be approached or fed. Park rangers recommend that you remain at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves, and 25 yards away from all other wildlife. Regardless of how docile they may appear, all large animals, including bison, bears, and wolves, can be dangerous. Every year, dozens of visitors get hurt when they get too close to the animals, which are large, wild, and potentially dangerous. Additionally, you should be aware that both bears and other wild animals are attracted to food by its smell, so food should never be left unattended, and your campsite should be kept clean. Apia is the capital of Samoa. The city is located on the island of Upolu and has an estimated population of 40,000. Apia was founded in the 1850s, and has been the official capital of Samoa since 1959. This was the site of the infamous naval standoff in 1889, when seven German, American, and British ships refused to leave. They sank every ship, including a British cruiser. Over 200 American and German lives were lost. During the Mau Mau Uprising, a peaceful demonstration in the town led to the murder of paramount chief Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III. Because Auckland is between two harbours, it has many beaches. The most popular ones are located in three areas. The beaches of the North Shore (part of the North Harbour district) are on the Pacific Ocean and stretch from Long Bay in the north to Devonport in the south. All the beaches are safe for swimming, and most are shaded by pohutukawa trees. Tamaki Drive runs along the shores of Waitemata Harbour, past the upmarket residential areas of Mission Bay and St Heliers in central Auckland. These are family-friendly beaches with plenty of shops right on the beach. Swimming is safe. The most famous local brew is "Number One"; it is not a sophisticated beer, but it is pleasant and refreshing. "Manta" is another local beer. There are many types of French wines to choose from, but the New Zealanders and Australians are probably better suited to travel. Tap water is safe to drink, but bottled water is widely available. For Australians, the idea of a "milk coffee" is strange. A coffee is just an "espresso", a cappuccino has a layer of frothed milk and tea is served without milk. Belgian chocolate meets expectations. The ice cream is expensive but good. Diving accidents are rare in reefs that are regularly visited by divers throughout the year. However, you should follow the advice of local authorities, heed the instructions of warning signs, and pay particular attention to safety notices. Medusae can be found along beaches and in river mouths from October to April north of 1770. They can be seen outside of this time. They do exist; however, they rarely attack humans. Most quolls are afraid of humans and would rather swim away. Saltwater crocodiles do not actively hunt in the ocean; their main habitat is in the mangrove-lined rivers north of Rockhampton. Booking in advance allows the traveler to have a place to stay when they arrive at their destination. Travel agents often have specialized offers for hotels, but other types of lodging, such as hostels, may also be booked through a travel agent. Travel agents often offer packages which include breakfast, transportation to and from the airport, or even airplane and hotel combinations. Also, if you need more time to review the offer or to gather other documents for the destination (e.g. visa). However, any changes or requests must be processed through the travel agent, and not directly with the hotel. For some festivals, most attendees either camp on site or otherwise consider it an essential part of the experience. If you want to be close to the action, you'll need to arrive early to secure a spot for your tent. Don't forget that even though the main stages may have finished for the night, there will still be music going on elsewhere on the site until the early hours. Some festivals have family-friendly camping areas. If you cross the northern Baltic Sea in winter, make sure you know where your cabin is, as the ice crushing against the hull makes an extremely unpleasant noise which some people are particularly sensitive to. St. Petersburg's cruises include time in the city. Cruise passengers do not require a visa (check conditions). Typically, casinos go to great lengths to maximize the time and money spent by their guests. Clocks and windows are often absent, and it is difficult to find the exits. They often have specialty food, beverage, and entertainment options to keep guests happy and on-site. In some places, alcoholic drinks are served for free. Intoxication, however, impairs your judgment, and all players are well aware of the importance of not getting drunk. People traveling in northern latitudes or in mountainous terrain would do well to consider the possibility of encountering snow, ice, or sub-zero temperatures. On icy or snow-covered roads, the amount of friction is reduced, so you can't drive as fast as you would on a normal road. Within a short time, several inches of snow can fall, posing the risk of being stranded. Visibility can also be reduced by snow or rain, or by condensation or frost on the windshield. On the other hand, ice and snow are normal in many countries, and traffic delays can be expected at all times of the year. Perhaps the biggest draw for tourists to Africa is the safari, and for many it is the highlight of their entire visit. The word safari is popularly used to refer to a journey through Africa to see its amazing wildlife, especially on the savannah. Some animals, such as elephants and giraffes, approach the car very closely, so a normal lens will give you a good view. Lions, leopards and cheetahs can sometimes be shy, and a pair of binoculars is a great way to see them. A foot safari (also known as trekking, hiking or walking) involves hiking for several hours or several days. The Paralympics will be held from 24 August to 5 September 2021. Some events will be held at other locations in Japan. Tokyo will be the only Asian city to have hosted both the summer and winter Olympics, after it hosted the games in 1964. If you've already booked your flights and accommodation for 2020 before the postponement was announced, this may become a problem. Travel insurance policies vary, but most coronavirus-related cancellations will be effective no later than July 2020, which is when the Olympics are scheduled to be held. Most tickets for the event are priced between ¥2,500 and ¥130,000, which is around the average of ¥7,000. Ironing a wet item of clothing can help remove wrinkles. Many hotels provide an ironing board and iron in the room, even if they are not in the actual room. If you don't have a clothes iron or don't want to iron your socks, you can try using a hair dryer. Do not overload the material (this can cause it to rip or, in extreme cases, burn). There are several ways to purify water, some effective against specific threats. In some areas, the water will be boiling for a minute, in others it will take several minutes. The effectiveness of filters varies widely, so if in doubt, consider buying bottled water from a reputable company. Travelers can get sick from animals they are unfamiliar with in a new region. Diseases can put food at risk, cause pain, or, at their worst, allergic reactions, swelling, or infections. Diseases that are not infectious in and of themselves, or animals that are not dangerous to humans by virtue of their ability to inflict injury or death, are not considered pests. Shopping at a Duty Free store is an opportunity to purchase goods tax and duty-free in certain locations. Travellers heading to countries with high taxes on things like alcohol and cigarettes can save a lot of money, especially on things like alcohol and cigarettes. The stretch from Point Marion to Fairmont is among the most challenging portions of the Buffalo-Pittsburgh Turnpike, which often plunges through deep woods in the middle of nowhere. If you are not accustomed to driving on secondary roads, take it easy: steep cliffs, narrow trails, and sharp curves are the norm. The speed limits on this section are considerably lower than those on the approach and following sections (usually 35-40 mph (56-64 km/h), and the strict enforcement of the speed limit is even more important here. Interestingly, however, cell phone coverage is better here than in other portions of the trail, such as the Pennsylvania Wilds. German pastries are quite buttery, and in Bavaria they are quite sweet and varied, similar to their southern neighbors, Austria. Pastries are ubiquitous, with year-round baked goods in seasonal flavors like strawberries and peaches in the summer. Many German baked goods also contain nuts, raisins, and other dried fruit, and popular cookies are often filled with a strong coffee. If you're in the mood for some crispy, doughy goodness, try a Berliner (or Pfannkuchen or Krapfen, depending on where you are). A curry is a dish made from a combination of herbs and spices with meat or vegetables. A curry can be either "dry" or "wet" depending on how much liquid is used. In northern India and Pakistan, yogurt is used as a marinade for curries; in southern India and other coastal regions of the subcontinent, coconut milk is more common. With 17,000 islands to choose from, Indonesian cuisine is a broad term that encompasses an array of dishes found throughout the country. However, without any other modifiers, it is used to refer to the traditional food of the central and eastern parts of the main island. Available today throughout the archipelago, Javanese cuisine includes an array of simple condiments, with peanuts, chiles, sugar (especially coconut sugar from Java), and various aromatic spices as popular flavorings. Stirrups are leather supports for the feet on either side of the saddle. They are more stable for the rider, but can be a safety issue in case the rider's feet get trapped in them. If a rider falls off a horse and a leg is caught in the stirrup, the rider could be dragged by the horse if he or she is unable to free the leg. There are a number of safety precautions that can be taken to avoid this. For one thing, most drivers are shoehorned into boots with a high heel and a very narrow sole. Some saddles, particularly English saddles, have safety bars which allow a leather knee pad to come down over the saddle when the rider falls backwards out of the saddle. Patagonia's main attraction for climbers, Chile's Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, also known as the "Yosemite of South America," offers a variety of granite cliffs and boulders. The peaks offer impressive views. Climbers from around the world continue to establish new routes on the infinite possibilities of the cliffs. Alpine skiing, which includes skiing and snowboarding, is popular and involves going down a snow-covered mountain on skis or a snowboard. Skiing is a popular activity with many followers, occasionally pejoratively referred to as "ski bums", who travel extensively to ski at multiple ski areas. The idea of skiing is an old one: rock paintings of skiers date from as early as 5000 B.C.! Alpine skiing as a recreational sport originated at least in the 17th century, and in 1861 the first ski club outside of Norway was established in Australia. Backcountry skiing: Also called backcountry touring, backcountry skiing or ski touring. It is related to, but does not involve alpine skiing or mountaineering, which is done on steep ground and requires much stiffer boots and skis. You should think of skiing as similar to hiking. In good condition they can cover slightly more distance than a pedestrian, but will seldom approach the speed of a cross-country skier with a heavy backpack on a prepared trail. Europe is a small continent geographically, but consists of many independent countries. Normal travel between multiple countries requires multiple visas and passport controls. However, in some ways the Schengen Area is more like a single country. Whenever you enter or leave this area, you will generally not have to pass through immigration checkpoints. Also, with a Schengen visa, you do not have to apply for a separate visa for each of the Schengen member countries, thus saving time, money, and paperwork. There is no universal definition of what constitutes an antique. Some governments define antique items to be those that are 100 years old or more. The geographic variations in the definition of the Eocene are such that the Eocene in North America is likely to be younger than it would be in Europe. Handicrafts can be defined as antique, though they are more recent than similar items made in large numbers. Reindeer herding is an important livelihood for the Sami people, and the culture surrounding the trade is important to many other professions. Traditionally, not all Sami people participated in large-scale reindeer herding, but relied on fishing, hunting, and similar activities, and regarded the reindeer mostly as draft animals. Today, many Sami work in modern professions. Tourism is an important source of income for the Sami people in Lapland. Although its use is widespread, especially among non-Romance speakers, the word "gypsy" is often considered pejorative because of its associations with negative stereotypes and inaccurate perceptions of the group. If travel advisories are in effect for the country you are traveling to, your health insurance or trip cancellation coverage may be affected. Maybe you should seek advice from other governments, but your advice is directed at your citizens. For example, an American in the Middle East might face different issues than an European or an Arab. Alerts are a brief overview of the political situation in a given country. The views presented are typically superficial, general, and greatly simplified compared to what is available at other sites. Extreme weather is a general term for any event that produces a significant amount of damage, disruption, or casualties. Extreme weather conditions can happen anywhere in the world, and they come in many forms, depending on geography, topography, and atmospheric conditions. Hurricanes, typhoons, floods, and wildfires are all forms and effects of extreme weather, as are hailstorms, tornadoes, tsunamis, and cyclones. Some regional and seasonal severe weather phenomena include thunderstorms, snowstorms, hailstorms, and tornadoes. Travelers are strongly advised to check for any severe weather conditions that may affect their area, as this could impact their travel plans. Anyone planning to visit a country that is a potential conflict zone should seek professional advice. A web search for "Hostile Media Training" is likely to turn up the address of a local company. A normal course would cover everything we've talked about here in more detail, usually with practical exercises. A typical course is 2-5 days long, with role-playing, many first aid exercises, and sometimes weapons training. Books and magazines about surviving in the wilderness are common, but few deal with survival in a war zone. Travellers who undergo sex reassignment surgery overseas should ensure they have valid travel documents to return home. Government policies on gender-neutral (X) passports and updated documents to reflect a desired name and sex vary widely. The willingness of foreign governments to comply with such documents varies widely. Security checks at airports became much more intrusive after 9/11 2001. Transgender people will not be required to undergo body scans to protect their privacy and dignity. Return currents are the flow that comes back to the shore after breaking at a reef or other feature. Because of the topography of the underground waters, the return flow concentrates in a few deep sections and possibly a fast current away from the deep waters. Most deaths occur from exhaustion trying to swim back against the current, which may be impossible. As soon as you get back into the current, swimming is no more difficult than usual. Try again in a different area where you won't get trapped or, if you're able to swim and it's been seen before, wait for rescue. The readjustment phase comes before the cultural shock (the honeymoon phase is shorter), is longer-lasting, and can be more serious. For travelers who find it easy to adapt to a new culture, it can be difficult to adjust to their home culture. When you come back home after living in a foreign country, you are already adapted to a new culture and some of your habits from your home country are gone. When you travel in a foreign country for the first time, people are probably going to be patient and understanding, knowing that it takes time to adjust to a new country. People may also need patience and understanding when they return home. The light and sound show at the Pyramid is one of the most interesting things to do with kids in the area. The pyramids can be viewed at night, and it is best to do so in silence before the show starts. Traditionally, there has always been the noise of the tourists and the market traders. The story of sound and light is like a fairy tale. The Sphinx serves as the backdrop and narrator of a long story. The scenes are then projected onto the illuminated pyramids. Many countries claim the Shetland Islands, discovered in 1819, which are home to the largest number of bases with sixteen of them active in 2020. The archipelago is located 120 km (75 miles) north of the peninsula. The largest island is King George Island with the base Villa Las Estrellas. Others include the Isle of Livingstone and Deception, where an active volcano's crater lake provides a dramatic backdrop to a natural harbour. Ellsworth Land is a landmass south of the Peninsula, bounded by the Sea of Bellingshausen. The peaks of the peninsula give way to the chaotic terrain of the Ellsworth Mountains, a 360 km (220 mi) long range that contains the Minnesota Glacier. The northern part of the Sentinel Range includes the highest mountains in Antarctica, including 4,892-metre (16,050 ft) Mount Vinson in the Vinson Massif. In remote locations without cellphone coverage, a satellite phone is likely to be the only option for communications. A satellite phone is not a replacement for a mobile phone, as it can only work outdoors with a clear view of the sky. This service is often used for ship-to-shore deliveries, remote field trips, and remote data and voice communications. Your local phone service provider should be able to provide more details on how to access this service. An increasingly popular option for those taking a gap year is to travel and learn a language. This is particularly popular among school-leavers, who can take a gap year before going to university, without jeopardising their education. In many cases, matriculating in a year abroad at a foreign university can actually improve your chances of getting into university in your home country. In general, registration is required for these educational programs. Finland is an excellent choice for boat trips. The "land of a thousand lakes" has thousands of islands, in lakes and coastal archipelagos. In the islands and lakes, a boat is not necessary. While the offshore islands and larger lakes are undoubtedly great places for any size boat, smaller boats or even a canoe will allow you to experience something different. Boating is the national pastime of Finland, where there is a boat for every seven or eight people. This is also the case in Norway, Sweden and New Zealand, but it is still somewhat of an exception (in the Netherlands the ratio is 1 in 100). Most of the Baltic Sea cruises include an extended stay in St. Petersburg, Russia. This means that you could spend a couple of days exploring the historic town and then head back to the boat for the night. If you are only going to disembark for excursions from the ship, then no additional visa is required (effective from 2009). Some cruise lines include Berlin (Germany) in their brochures. As the map above shows, Berlin is far from the sea and cruise ship tours of the city are not included in the cruise price. Flying can be an unnerving experience for people of all ages and backgrounds, but especially those who have never flown before or have had a traumatic experience. This is not something to be embarrassed about: it is no different from the fears and prejudices people have about other things. For some, understanding some of the workings of the aircraft, and what occurs during a flight, may help overcome a fear of the unknown, or of being out of control. Delivery companies are paid a premium to deliver items quickly. Often, time is of the essence when it comes to business documents, merchandise or parts for an urgent repair. For some routes, larger companies have their own jets, but for others, and for smaller companies, this has been a problem. If you ship something by air, it may take a day or two for it to be delivered and processed by customs when it arrives at its destination. The only way to get it there sooner would be to ship it as cargo, but that is against airline policy to ship cargo without a passenger. This is where you come in. A great way to fly first class, or at least business class, is to put a big charge on your card for a privilege (or better yet, make your company pay). However, they are not cheap: expect to pay anywhere from twice to eleven times as much as you would pay for a normal business class fare, depending on the class of service. In general, it is not worth paying a premium for a business or first class ticket on a direct flight from A to B. Airlines know there is a group of passengers who are willing to pay a premium to arrive at their destination quickly and comfortably, and charged accordingly. The capital of Moldova is Chisinau. The local language is Romanian, but Russian is also widely spoken. Moldova is a multi-ethnic republic that suffered from ethnic conflicts. In 1994, this conflict gave rise to the Transnistrian "Republic" in western Moldova, which has its own government and currency but is not recognized by any UN member. Economic links have been restored between the two parts of Moldova despite the failure of political negotiations. The main religion in Moldova is Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Izmir is Turkey's third-largest city with a population of 3.7 million, the country's second-largest port after Istanbul, and a major transportation hub. The ancient city of Smyrna is now a modern, extensive, and popular shopping center, overlooking a huge bay and surrounded by mountains. Wide avenues, modern glass-fronted buildings, and glittering shopping malls mingle with traditional red-tiled roofs, 18th-century market, old mosques and churches, though the city has more of a Mediterranean European feel to it than a traditional Turkish one. The village of Haldarsvík overlooks the island of Eysturoy and has a distinctive octagonal church. Interesting marble sculptures of pigeons on tombstones can be seen in the cemetery. Take a half-hour stroll around this intriguing town. To the north and easily accessible is the romantic and fascinating town of Sintra, which was brought to the notice of foreigners by Lord Byron's enthusiastic description of its charms. Scotturb bus 403 regularly departs from Sintra and stops at Cabo da Roca. Also in the north, the huge Shrine of Our Lady of Fátima (tomb) is a world-renowned center of pilgrimage, and home to the famous apparitions of the Virgin. Remember, you're more or less standing atop a giant hole in the ground, in a place that has great significance to a large portion of the world's population. There are still many people - both Jews and non-Jews - who either survived the Holocaust or lost loved ones, who were murdered by the Nazis, and worked until they died in the camps. This place must be treated with the dignity, solemnity, and respect it deserves. There is no room for jokes about the Holocaust and the Nazis. It is prohibited to deface or vandalize the perimeter with tags or paint scribble on the structures. The official languages of Barcelona are Catalan and Castilian. About half of the population speaks Catalan, and everyone understands Castilian, and almost everyone can speak it. However, most signs are written in Catalan, as Catalan is the official language in Catalonia by law. However, Catalan: is widely used in public transportation and other services. Normal metro announcements are only in Catalan, but unexpected delays are announced by an automated system in Catalan, Spanish, French, Arabic and Japanese. Parisians have a reputation for being egocentric, ill-mannered, and arrogant. Although this is often a misconception, the best way to blend in Paris is to be polite and well mannered. This will make exploring the city much easier. Parisians may seem rude at first, but they will quickly warm up to you if you are polite. The Plitvice Lakes National Park has a dense mass of forests, mainly beeches, various types of pines, spruces, and a mixture of alpine and Mediterranean vegetation. It has an incredibly diverse array of vegetation, due to its range of microclimates, soils, and elevations. The area is also home to an incredibly diverse array of animals and birds. Here you can find unique wildlife, such as European brown bears, wolves, eagles, lynx, wild cats and mountain goats, as well as many other common species. Women must wear long skirts and have their heads covered when visiting the monasteries. Most of the monasteries will provide bedding for a fee for those who do not have their own, but if you bring your own, especially a brightly colored one, you will receive a smile from the monk or nun at the door. Men should also have trousers that come up over their heels. These can also be borrowed from the pile by the entrance, but that clothing is not washed after every use, so you may not feel comfortable or comfortable putting those robes on. One size fits all men! Mallorquin cuisine, like similar Mediterranean cuisine, is based on bread, vegetables, and meat (pork in particular), and uses olive oil for cooking. A simple popular snack, especially in the summer, is the Pa amb Oli (bread with olive oil, tomato and seasoning, e.g. cheese, tuna, etc.) All nouns, including the pronoun Sie (meaning they), are always capitalized, even in the middle of a sentence. Italian:Italian:pronunciation is relatively easy because most words are pronounced exactly as they are spelled. The main letters to watch out for are C and G, because their pronunciation depends on the following vowel. Therefore, by learning this basic grammar you will be able to understand many sentences in Persian and this will help you learn more about the Persian language. It can't be stressed enough that if you already speak a Romance language, learning Portuguese will be an easier task. Nevertheless, those who are familiar with Spanish might be tempted to think that Portuguese is similar enough to not need to be studied separately. Premodern observatories are now mostly obsolete, and are preserved either as museums or educational centres. At the time of their prime, when light pollution was not a problem as it is today, they were usually found in or near cities or college campuses, which were easier to reach than modern observatories. Most modern research telescopes are giant instruments in remote locations with excellent observing conditions. The practice of viewing cherry blossoms, known as hanami, has been part of Japanese culture since the eighth century. The Chinese concept of the vineyard, where peaches were the favorite fruit. In Japan, the first cherry blossom viewing parties were held only for the emperor and other members of the imperial court. Visiting a formal garden, picking "samples" will result in immediate expulsion, without discussion. Singapore is generally a very safe place to visit, and is easy to navigate, and almost everything can be bought once you arrive. However, while it is in the "high tropics" and only a few degrees north of the equator, expect year-round heat and intense sunshine (when the sky is unobscured, which is most of the time). There are also buses heading north to Hebron, the traditional burial place of the Biblical patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and their wives. He discovered that the bus he was thinking of taking would go to Hebron and not just to the nearby Jewish settlement of Kiryat Arba. Inland waterways can be a great theme for a vacation. For example, visit castles along the Loire, Rhine, or Danube rivers, or take a cruise along the interesting towns of the Erie Canal. They also mark routes for popular hiking or cycling tours. Christmas is one of the most important festivals of Christianity, celebrating the birth of Jesus. Many of the traditions surrounding the celebration have been adopted by non-Christians in Christian and non-Christian countries around the world. There is a tradition of spending Easter Eve outdoors at a vantage point to watch the sun rise. Of course, there are Christian theological explanations for this tradition, but it is more likely to be a pre-Christian ritual celebrating the coming of spring and fertility. Traditional churches often hold a Paschal Vigil on the Saturday night of Easter weekend, and then hold an Easter morning service to celebrate the resurrection of Christ. All the animals that are now on the islands came here either by swimming, flying, or howling. Because of the distance from the mainland, most mammals were unable to make it to the Galapagos, so the Galapagos Giant Tortoise became the first herbivore in the Galapagos. Since humans arrived in the Galapagos, many mammals have been introduced, including goats, horses, cows, rats, cats, and dogs. If you visit the Arctic or Antarctic in the winter, you can experience the polar night—when the sun never rises over the horizon. This is a great time to see the Northern Lights, as it is almost dark 24 hours a day. As these areas are lightly populated, and light pollution is not a problem, you can enjoy the stars. Japanese working culture is more hierarchical and formal than in the West. Business suits are standard business attire, and coworkers refer to each other by title or job name. Having a sense of harmony at work is important, and this includes a group effort rather than individual recognition. Employees are often required to obtain approval from supervisors for any decisions they make and are expected to comply with instructions.
