This new environment will have different resources and competitors, so to be a strong competitor, the new population will require different features or transformations than before. The native population has not changed at all; they still need those original adaptations. Over time, as the new population establishes itself in its new environment, it becomes less and less like the original population. At some point in the next thousands or even millions of years, the two populations will become so different that they will no longer be the same species. The process by which new species form is called speciation. Speciation is an inevitable consequence of evolution and is a fundamental part of the evolutionary process. Plants produce the oxygen we breathe and take in the carbon dioxide we exhale. Plants make their own food using the sun, a process called photosynthesis, and also provide shade. We build our houses from plants, we make our clothes out of plants, most of the food we eat is made from plants. Without plants, animals would not be able to survive. The top of the tower was a sanctuary dedicated to the god. Because of the mild climate in the Middle East, housing was not an important issue. Most of life of the Jewish family was spent outdoors. Women cooked in the courtyard, and shops were simply open counters facing the street, and stone was used to build houses. In the land of Canaan there were no great forests, and wood was very costly. Greenland was sparsely populated. According to Norse sagas, it was named by Erik the Red, who sailed from Iceland after being banished for murder. But, regardless of its discovery, Eskimos had already been living there for some time. Although all the Scandinavian countries were very similar, the peoples, kings, customs, and history of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland were very different. Even though the document says something on the back, it is not a treasure map. The city-state was the first reality to recognize the concept of a nation. The culture of a civilization is to pass knowledge from one generation to another, to leave an indelible cultural mark through a fair distribution. Smaller cultures often leave no trace of their existence, and are thus not recognized as distinct civilizations. During the Revolutionary War, the thirteen states formed a weak central government for the first time, and Congress was the sole component of that government, per the Articles of Confederation. The Congress had no power to tax, and as there was neither a national executive nor a national judiciary, recourse had to be had to the several states for the execution of its acts. It did not have the authority to bypass taxes and trade barriers between the states. Article changes required the unanimous consent of all the states, and as a result, the central government was so powerless that its representatives were often absent. The Dutch East India Company established a base on the southwest coast of Taiwan in 1624, beginning a period of change in which the indigenous grain-producing systems were disrupted and Chinese contract laborers were brought in to work on the company's rice and sugar plantations. In 1683, the western and northern coastal areas of Taiwan were taken over by the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912); in 1885, Taiwan was declared a province of the Qing Empire. After being defeated in the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895), the Qing government signed the Shimonoseki Treaty in 1895, ceding the sovereignty of Taiwan to Japan, which governed the island until 1945. In these times, many noble families were struggling for the throne, and great wars ensued. The Three Kingdoms period is considered to be one of the most violent periods in Chinese history. Thousands of people died fighting for a place in the magnificent Xi'an Palace. The social and political effects are numerous, some of which include the use of the metric system, the switch from absolutism to republicanism, nationalism and the belief that the nation belongs to the people, not one sole king. Furthermore, after the Revolution all professions were open to men, allowing the most ambitious and successful to prosper. This also holds true for the military, as military rankings are now based on caliber, rather than class. The French Revolution was an inspiration to many other oppressed workers in other countries to start their own revolution. Muhammad had a profound interest in the afterlife. He would often meditate in a cave called "Hira" on the mountain of "noor" (light). The cave, which has been preserved to this day, provides a clear picture of the spirituality of Muhammad. The cave sits atop a mountain north of Mecca, and is completely isolated from the rest of the world. In fact, it's not an easy place to find, even if you know it exists. Once inside the cave, you are completely isolated. Inside the cave you see nothing but a beautifully clear sky, and many mountains surrounding you. From the inside of the cave you see very little of the outside world. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the World to survive to the present day. The Great Pyramid of Giza, also known as the Pyramid of Khufu, is the largest of the three pyramids in the Giza pyramid complex and the only remaining one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Giza Plateau, also known as the Giza Necropolis, is the site of the Great Pyramid of Giza, several smaller pyramids, the Great Sphinx, and various tombs and temples. The important pyramid was built in honor of King Cheops, and many of the smaller pyramids, tombs, and temples were built to honor the king's wives and other relatives. The "upward-pointing triangle" resembles a V, while the "downward-pointing triangle" looks like an inverted trapezoid. High bowing means to start at the tip and pull the bow toward you, and low bowing means to start at the frog (where the hand holds the bow) and push the bow away from you. A rising bow makes a softer sound, while a descending bow produces a louder, more definite tone. To understand the Templars, you need to know the context in which this order was created. The period in which these events took place is commonly referred to as the High Middle Ages, the period between the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries (1000–1300 CE). The High Middle Ages were followed by the Late Middle Ages, which ended around 1500. Technological determinism is a broad concept that encompasses a number of ideas ranging from technological innovation or the technological imperative to the concept of technological determinism in the strict sense that the fate of man is subject to laws of nature and their realization in technology. Most of the interpretations of technological determinism have two general ideas in common: 1) that the development of technology itself follows a course which is independent of political and cultural influence, and 2) that technology has "effects" upon society which are intrinsic rather than socially conditioned. For example, we might say that the invention of the automobile required the development of an extensive road network. However, a national network of roads for only a few cars is not economically viable, so new methods of production are developed to reduce the cost of car ownership. The large number of cars on the road also led to an increase in road accidents, and thus the invention of new techniques to treat injured people. Romanticism had a strong cultural determinism component, coming from authors like Goethe, Fichte and Schlegel. In the framework of Romanticism, geography influenced individuals, and over time customs, culture, and ways of life emerged that were in harmony with the context of the society, and were therefore more effective than arbitrary laws. Like Paris today, Constantinople was the fashion capital of the medieval world. Its prominence as a centre of luxury goods began about 400 A.D. and lasted to about 1100 A.D. By the 12th century, its prestige had declined, in part because the Crusaders returned from the East with silk and spices, which were more highly regarded than anything the Byzantine markets could provide. It was at this point that the title of a fashion capital moved from Constantinople to Paris. The period from the 10th to the 11th century, and the 14th century were the high points of the Gothic style. Initially, the clothing was greatly influenced by the Byzantine culture of the East. But due to the lag of the communication ways the spreading of the styles in the West could be delayed by 25-30 years. By the end of the Middle Ages, Western Europe had developed its own style. One of the most significant developments from the Crusades was the invention of buttons for clothing. Subsistence farming is when farmers farm for the sole purpose of providing enough food for their family and themselves. Subsistence farming is a simple system, usually of a biological nature, using seeds from the local ecosystem in conjunction with crop rotation or other relatively simple techniques to get the most from the produce. Traditionally, most farmers were subsistence farmers, and in many developing countries, that is still the case. Subcultures are groups of people with similar views who do not feel represented by the standards of society, and thus gain a sense of identity. Subcultures can be distinguished by age, ethnicity, class, location, and/or gender. The characteristics that define a subculture may be linguistic, aesthetic, religious, political, sexual, geographic, or some combination. Members of a subculture often identify themselves through a distinctive use of style, mannerisms, and argot. One way of illustrating the importance of socialization is to look at some unhappy cases of children who, through neglect, or as a result of misfortune, or through intentional abuse, have been deprived of proper socialization by adults. These children are referred to as "feral" or "wild" children. Some of them have been isolated by people (often their own parents): in some cases, abandonment is the result of a serious intellectual or physical disability. Wild children may have experienced serious abuse or trauma before being abandoned or running away. Other children may have been raised by animals; others may have lived in the wilderness alone. When a feral child is raised entirely by non-human animals, they exhibit behavior (within the bounds of physical possibility) which is similar to that of the particular animal who cared for them, such as a fear or indifference to humans. Learning through projects should make learning itself easier and more interesting, while scaffolding goes a bit further. The scaffolding is not a learning style, but rather a way to help a learner get started on a new learning experience, such as using a new computer program or starting a new project. Scaffolding can be either virtual or real. In other words, a teacher is an example of "scaffolding", but so is the little Microsoft Office assistant. Virtual labs are integrated into the software and designed to question, prompt, and explain procedures that students may have had trouble handling alone. Children are placed in foster care for many reasons, including neglect, abuse, or extortion. No child should ever be raised in a situation from which they are denied the necessities of food, care, and education, yet this is what is happening to them. We believe that foster care is a safe place for these children. Our foster care system should provide safe homes, nurturing parents, stable education, and accessible health care. It is assumed that foster care will meet all the needs of the child that were not met in the home from which they were removed. The Internet combines some elements of mass communication with some elements of interpersonal communication. The distinctive features of the Internet lead to additional dimensions in the theory of uses and gratifications. For example, important reasons for using the Internet include "learning" and "socialization" (James et al., 1995). Eighmey and McCord's (1998) study of audience reactions to web sites identified two new aspects of motivation, namely "personal involvement" and "continuing relationships". The use of video recording has led to significant advances in the understanding of micro expressions, which are fleeting facial movements that can reveal a person's true feelings. In particular, it is said that you can tell if someone is lying by reading their micro expressions correctly. In his essay "The President's Speech," Oliver Sacks showed how people who are unable to understand spoken language because of brain damage are able to accurately judge the sincerity of others. He even suggests that these skills in understanding human behaviour could be shared with animals, such as pet dogs. In the 20th century, research showed that there were two pools of genetic variation, namely hidden and expressed. With the mutation a new gene variant is added, with selection it is removed from the pool of expressed variants. From one generation to the next, segregation and recombination redistribute the variability both forward and backward between the two pools. For a primate with a digestive system similar to that of a human, it would have been difficult to obtain essential amino acids from the vegetation available in the savanna. Further, failure to engage in these activities has serious consequences: stunted growth, malnutrition, and ultimately death. The most easily available plant foods would have been proteins in leaves and seeds, but these are hard for primates to digest unless they are cooked. Animal foods (such as ants, termites, eggs) are not only easy to digest, but provide a high amount of protein, containing all the essential amino acids. Given this, it should not be surprising that our ancient ancestors solved their "protein problem" in much the same way that today's savanna chimpanzees do. REM sleep is the stage of sleep characterized by rapid eye movement, high brain activity, and dreaming. This can easily be accomplished using a reasonably quiet alarm clock to wake you up without fully rousing you. If you would be tempted to hit the snooze button, put your alarm clock on the other side of the room so you would have to get out of bed to turn it off. Other options that focus on circadian rhythms involve drinking lots of liquids before bed, especially water or tea, which are known for their diuretic effects, which will make you wake up to urinate. A person has an inner peace which is inversely proportional to the tension in his body and spirit. The lower the tension, the higher the quality of life. Everyone has the potential to find complete peace and fulfillment. Everyone can achieve enlightenment. This is only prevented by our tension and negativity. Tibetan Buddhism is based on the teachings of the Buddha, but it has been enriched by the Mahayana path of love and various yoga techniques of India. In essence, Tibetan Buddhism is quite simple. It is based on Kundalini Yoga, meditation, and a universal love. Kundalini yoga activates the energy of Kundalini (energy of enlightenment) through yoga poses, breathing exercises, mantras, and visualization. Deity Yoga is the focus of Tibetan meditation. Through visualization of various deities, energy channels are cleansed, chakras activated, and enlightened consciousness developed. Germany was a common enemy in World War II, which led to cooperation between the USSR and the United States. With the end of the war, ideological, procedural, and cultural conflicts led to a split between the two countries. Two years after the end of the war, former allies had become enemies, and the Cold War had begun. It would last for the next 40 years, and would be fought by professional soldiers, in battlefields from Africa to Asia, in Afghanistan, Cuba, and many other countries. By September 17, 1939, the Polish defense had already been breached, and the only option was to retreat and regroup in Romania. However, these plans became obsolete when more than 800,000 Soviet Red Army soldiers advanced and created the Belarusian and Ukrainian fronts after invading eastern Poland, violating the Riga Peace Treaty, the Soviet–Polish Non-Aggression Pact, and other international, bilateral, and multilateral treaties. Using ships to transport goods is without a doubt the most efficient way of moving large amounts of people and goods across the oceans. Traditionally, the job of the Navy has been to ensure that the country has the ability to move people and goods, while denying that ability to the other side. A recent example that supports this theory and is more well-known is the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II. During the battle, the United States sought to supply Britain across the Atlantic Ocean. At the same time the German Navy, mostly using submarines, tried to interrupt this traffic. If the Allies had failed, Germany would have likely invaded and conquered Great Britain, just as they had done in the rest of Europe. Goats were first domesticated approximately 10,000 years ago in the Zagros Mountains of Iran. They were domesticated by ancient cultures and tribes for their milk, wool, meat, and hides. Domestic sheep were usually kept in flocks that grazed on the hills or other open land, often under the supervision of a shepherd, who was often a child or adolescent. These traditional methods of pastoral farming are still used today. The first wagonways were made in England in the 16th century. Although they were simply wooden planks laid side by side, the wagons, when compared to the slightly more rugged roads of the period, allowed horses to travel faster and carry more weight. Crossties were introduced fairly early on to hold the rails in place. Eventually it was discovered that the rails would be more efficient if they had a metal top on them. It became common practice, though it was hard on the wooden wheels of wagons. Eventually wooden wheels were replaced by iron ones. In 1767 the first all-iron wheels appeared. The first means of transportation invented by humans were legs. The first upright man, Homo erectus, appeared about two million years ago. Its predecessor, the australopithèque, did not habitually walk upright. Evidence of bipedalism in the 4.2–3.9 million year old fossils of Australopithecus is present, though Sahelanthropus may have been bipedal as early as seven million years ago. To lessen the impact of future suffering, we can start by adopting an environmentally-friendly lifestyle, join the environmental movement, and become an activist. In many cases this is only a symptomatic treatment. If we don't want just a temporary solution, we have to find the real reason and deal with it. It can't be gainsaid that the world has undergone a sea change due to the scientific and technological advancement of the human race, but problems have increased due to overpopulation and the bizarre style of living of the human beings. After Congress adopted it on July 4, a handwritten copy signed by both President of Congress John Hancock and Secretary Charles Thomson was sent to John Dunlap, a printer just a few blocks away. In the night between 150 and 200 broadsides were printed, today known as the "Dunlap broadsides". The document was read publicly for the first time on July 8 in the courtyard of Independence Hall, and the reading was performed by John Nixon. A copy was sent to George Washington on July 6 and read to his troops in New York on July 9, while a copy was sent to London on August 10. Dunlap's 25 surviving broadsides are the earliest known copies of the document. The original manuscript is lost. Today, many paleontologists believe that a group of dinosaurs survived and are still alive today. We call them birds. Many people do not consider them to be dinosaurs because of their feathers and ability to fly. Birds, however, have many features that are similar to those of the dinosaurs. Like the T. rex, they have scaly feet and claws, lay eggs, and walk on two legs. In essence, the manipulation of encoded information in the form of binary numbers is what all modern computers do. A binary number can have only one of the two values, 0 or 1, and in computer science, these numbers are called binary numbers or bits. Internal poisoning may not be immediately apparent and its symptoms, such as vomiting, are very generic, making immediate diagnosis difficult. The most common sign of an internal poisoning is when a container of poisonous chemicals or drugs is found open in the home. See if there is poison-specific first aid instructions on the label. Entomologists formally call this group of insects acari. The word is derived from the ancient familiarity with bed bugs, an insect which has become highly adapted to being a parasite of man. Both the assassin bugs and bed bugs are nest predators, meaning that they are adapted to living in the nests or homes of their hosts. In the United States, multiple sclerosis (MS) affects an estimated 400,000 people, more than any other neurological disorder in young adults and middle-aged individuals. MS is a neurological disease that affects the central nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord and optic nerve. The research showed that women were twice as likely to develop SM than men. A couple may decide that having a child is not in their best interest or the best interest of their child. These couples would be able to choose an adoption plan for their child. In an adoption, biological parents give up their parental rights so that another couple may become the legal parents of the child. The primary goal of science is understanding how the world works, and this is largely achieved through the scientific method. But it's not just experimentation, because an experiment is a test of one or more hypotheses; asking questions and making observations can also help guide scientific research. Naturalists and philosophers focused on classic texts, especially the Latin Bible. Aristotle's views on most subjects of knowledge, including psychology, were accepted. With the gradual decline of the Greek language, the West was cut off from its Greek philosophical and scientific roots. Many have noted that physiological rhythms and behavior are dependent on the presence of endogenous rhythms and their production by the biological clock. Most living things, including bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals, exhibit periodic behavior that is not just a response to periodic stimuli. Biological clocks are independent oscillators, and their free running period is unaffected by external stimuli. One of the earliest experiments to suggest that DNA was a genetic material was performed by Hershey and Chase. Hershey and Chase used bacteriophages, or viruses, to put their own DNA into a bacterium. They performed two experiments using radioactive phosphorus or sulfur to label either the bacteriophage's DNA or its protein. Mutations can have a number of different effects depending on the type of mutation, the importance of the piece of genetic material affected, and whether the mutation occurs in a germ cell or a somatic cell. The mutations that can be passed on to offspring are only those in the germinal cells; mutations elsewhere can kill the cell or cause cancer. Naturalist tourism involves people visiting areas of natural beauty, including wild flora and fauna. Some local activities include hunting, fishing, photography, birdwatching, park visits, and ecosystem learning. Perhaps by visiting, photographing, and learning about the orangutans of Borneo. Every morning, people leave the small towns for their cars to go to work, and pass other people on their way to the place they just came from. In this dynamic flow, everyone is in some way connected to the private-car-based system that simultaneously supports them. Today, science is revealing that this carbon-based economy has pushed the biosphere outside of one of its stable states that has allowed for the evolution of humans over the past two million years. Everyone participates in social life and relies on the transportation system, which most people complain about. In developed countries, you seldom hear complaints about the quality of the water or bridges collapsing. Why are so many transport systems plagued by complaints, why are they rejected every day? Is it because the engineers who designed them are incompetent, or are there deeper reasons? Traffic flow (or traffic flow) is the study of how individual drivers and vehicles move from one place to another and interact with each other. Unfortunately, traffic flow studies are complicated by the fact that driver behavior cannot be predicted with 100% certainty. Fortunately, driver behavior tends to be reasonably stable, so traffic flows can be represented reasonably well by a mathematical model. To obtain a more accurate representation of traffic flow, the three main variables (1) throughput, (2) density, and (3) velocity were correlated. These relationships are useful for planning, designing, and operating roadways. Insects were the first animals to take to the air. Their ability to fly made it harder for predators to catch them, and also made it easier to find food and mates. Most insects are able to fold their wings back over their bodies. This allows them to make use of a greater number of small crevices for hiding from predators. Of all the insects in existence today, the only ones that cannot fold their wings are the dragonflies and damselflies. About a thousand years ago, a man named Aristarchus said that the solar system went around the Sun. For some, this made sense, but many others believed that the solar system, including the Sun (and the other stars), orbited the Earth. Which makes sense, right? Because we don't feel the Earth moving, do we? The Amazon is the largest river on Earth, and the second-longest river. It discharges about eight times as much water as the world's second-largest river. The Amazon River is also the widest river on Earth, in places reaching six miles across. Twenty percent of the world's fresh water that flows into oceans comes from the Amazon River. The main stem of the Amazon River is 6,387 kilometres (3,980 mi) long. It has more than a thousand tributaries. Stone pyramids were built right up to the end of the Old Kingdom, but the pyramids of Giza were never exceeded in size or technical excellence. The ancient Egyptians of the New Kingdom would have been in awe of the monuments of their ancestors, who had been dead for more than a thousand years. The population of the Vatican City is approximately 800 people, and it is the smallest independent state in the world by population. As the language of the Vatican City for legislation and official communications, Italian is used. In addition to being the everyday language of most people who work in the country, Italian is also the official language of the state, while Latin is often used in religious ceremonies. All the citizens of Vatican City are Roman Catholics. Humans have known the basic chemical elements such as gold, silver, and copper from antiquity: these elements can be found uncombined in nature, and can be extracted from ores using primitive tools. According to the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, everything is composed of one or more of the four elements: earth, water, air, and fire. These states actually resemble the four states of matter, namely (in order) solid, liquid, gaseous, and plasma. However, he also theorized that they would form new things. An alloy is basically a mixture of two or more metals. You will find many elements in the periodic table. Elements like calcium and potassium are considered metals. Of course there are other metals such as silver and gold. They can also contain small amounts of non-metallic elements, such as carbon. Everything in the universe - including you - is made of atoms, and all atoms are made up of even smaller particles called molecules. Atoms are incredibly small, in fact a trillion of them would fit into the period at the end of this sentence. After its invention, the pencil became a good friend to many. Unfortunately, with the introduction of new writing methods, the pencil became less important and was used more and more seldom. Today, everyone is texting on their computer screens and never has to get close to a typewriter. We can only wonder what the keyboard will be like when something newer comes along. The principle that it takes energy to assemble a nucleus of many protons and neutrons is the basis for how a fission bomb works. It's kind of like rolling a heavy car up a hill. So, by splitting the nucleus, some of that energy is released. Some atoms have unstable nuclei, meaning that they tend to break down when given a little push. The moon's surface is covered with rocks and dust, and its outer shell is called the crust. The rift is approximately 70 km (43 mi) wide at its narrowest point and 100 km (62 mi) wide at its widest point. It is thinner under the sea and thicker over land. The cones may be thicker on one side because the crust is thinner there. This allowed the lava to rise higher. Content theories focus on what people are interested in or what they find satisfying. According to these theories, people have certain needs and desires that are internalized as they become adults. These theories look at what unites people and what motivates them to do what they do, and what are the factors in their environment that lead them to do or not do certain things. Some popular theories of motivation include Maslow's hierarchy of needs and Herzberg's two-factor theory. When managers start to manage their former colleagues, two approaches can emerge. One is to try to remain "one of the boys" (or girls). A manager of this type has a hard time making unpopular decisions, implementing discipline, assessing performance, defining and assigning responsibilities. At the other extreme, the manager becomes a completely different person - someone who feels he has to change the entire approach of the team and make it his own. Ultimately, the leader is the person who is responsible for the overall success and failure of the team. This attitude often creates tension between leaders and the rest of the team. The standard of excellence for a virtual team is no different from that of a conventional team, but there are some slight differences. Members of the virtual team often serve as a point of contact for their physical team. They are often able to offer more leeway on meeting times than conventional tour groups, which may not fall within local time zones. The existence of a "virtual invisible team" (Larson and LaFasto, 1989, p. 109) is also a fundamental element of a virtual team. The "invisible team" is the management team to which every member refers, and which sets standards for every member. Why would a company want to go through the long process of building a learning organization? A good reason to embrace the concepts of organizational learning is innovation. When all resources are effectively utilized by all functional departments in an organization, creativity and innovation can flourish. Accordingly, a path to collaboration within an organization to overcome a roadblock could lead to a new innovative process to meet the customer's needs. For an organization to be innovative, leaders must create a culture of innovation, shared knowledge, and organizational learning. Angel (2006) illustrates the theory of the continuum as a method for helping organizations achieve higher levels of performance. Neurobiological results have demonstrated the physical existence of a theoretical approach to the study of cognition. The field of research becomes narrower and thus much more precise. Scientists have been looking at the link between brain abnormalities and behaviour. It is already known that certain types of brain damage, injury, lesions, and tumors can affect behavior and alter certain mental functions. The introduction of new technologies has allowed us to see and probe into brain structures and processes that were never observed before. This gives us an enormous amount of information, and materials with which to create simulation models that will help us understand our mental processes. Although AI has a strong science fiction-like connotation, AI is an important field of computer science which is concerned with the behavior, learning, and adaptation of intelligent machines. Artificial intelligence research is concerned with the creation of intelligent machines. Some examples of applications are control, planning and scheduling, being able to respond to client inquiries and diagnoses, and understanding verbal, written, and facial expressions. These things have become separate disciplines, which are focused on solving real problems. Artificial intelligence is widely used today in economic, medical, engineering, and military contexts, and is increasingly being incorporated into consumer software and computer games. Field trips are an important part of the curriculum. Teachers often wish to take their students somewhere that cannot be reached by bus. This is where the technology of the virtual tours comes in. Students can look at artifacts in museums, visit an aquarium, or admire beautiful works of art, all from their classroom. A virtual field trip can also be a great way to share travel experiences and reflections with future classes. For instance, students at Bennet School in North Carolina create a website about their trip to the capital every year; the website is redesigned every year but the old ones are kept online and become an album. Blogs can also help students become better writers. Often when students begin blogging, their grammar and spelling is poor, but the presence of an audience changes that. Since students are usually the toughest critics, the blogger made it a point to improve his writing skills. Blogs also "force students to become more aware of the moment they are in." The desire to engage the reader leads students to be creative and interesting (Toto, 2004). The blog is a tool that is designed to encourage collaboration and learning beyond normal school hours. Proper use of blogs "can help learners become more critical and analytical. By actively responding to materials on the Internet, learners can position themselves within the writings of others, and even articulate their views on specific issues" (Oravec, 2002). Ottawa is the beautiful, bilingual capital of Canada, and is filled with art galleries and museums that tell the story of the country - past and present. To the south are the Falls at Niagara, and to the north the unspoiled natural beauty of the Muskoka region. All of this, and more, makes Ontario typically Canadian in the eyes of foreigners. Much of the country's area in the north is sparsely populated, some of it being nearly uninhabited wilderness. If you compare the population as a whole, this may come as a surprise to many people: there are more African Americans in the U.S. than there are Canadian citizens. East Africa or Eastern Africa is the eastern portion of the African continent, comprising the countries of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Somalia. Madagascar is by far the largest, and its unique natural heritage makes it a world of its own. Most of the smaller islands are independent countries or French overseas collectivities. The Arabs also brought Islam to these lands, and it was a long journey to the Comoros and Mayotte. In the 15th century, the discovery of the sea route from Europe to India by Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama opened the way for European influence and colonialism. To the north, the region is bounded by the Sahel, to the south and west by the Atlantic Ocean. For women travellers: a married woman of any age should always register herself as such. A ring (but not an expensive-looking one) can also be useful. Women should be aware that cultural differences may mean that what they consider to be harassment would not be perceived as such by local men, and that being grabbed, groped, etc. is not uncommon. Have the courage to refuse men, and don't be afraid to stand up to them (cultural differences are no excuse!). The modern city of Casablanca was founded by Berber fishermen in the 10th century BCE under the name Anfa; it was a major port for the Phoenicians, Romans, and Merinids. The Portuguese destroyed it, rebuilt it as the White House, and abandoned it in 1755 after an earthquake. The Moroccan sultan rebuilt the city, which was called Daru l-Bayda, later to be called Casablanca by the Spanish traders who chose it as a base for their businesses. Compared to the rest of Morocco, Casablanca is one of the least interesting places to go shopping. In and around the old medina there are plenty of shops selling traditional Moroccan items such as tagines, pottery, leatherware, narghiles and an abundance of tourist tat. Goma is a tourist city located in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, near Rwanda. In 2002, a lava flow from Nyiragongo devastated Goma, destroying most of the city's roads, especially in the city center. While Goma is reasonably safe, you would be advised to carefully consider the ongoing conflict in the North Kivu province before heading there. The city is also a starting point for climbing the Nyiragongo volcano, and is one of the cheapest places to see mountain gorillas in Africa. Taxis (motorcycle with a sidecar) are available in Goma, and a normal fare (in local currency) is around 500 Congolese francs for a short trip. Due to its relative inaccessibility, "Timbuktu" has come to represent a distant and exotic land. Today, Timbuktu is a decaying city, but its reputation as a tourist attraction is still intact, and it has an airport. In 1990, it was placed on the World Heritage in Danger List due to threats from encroaching desert sands. It was a major stop on Henry Louis Gates's PBS series Wonders of the African World. With its more Arab than African feel, the city is distinctly different from other African countries. The Kruger National Park (Kruger National Park, KNP) is located in the northeast of South Africa and extends east along the Mozambican border, north to Zimbabwe, and south to the Crocodile River. Spanning 19,500 km2, the park contains 14 different ecosystems, each supporting its own unique wildlife. It is one of South Africa's most popular attractions, and is the country's largest national park (SANParks). As with all of South Africa's national parks, daily conservation and park admission fees are payable. Consider purchasing a Wild Card, which will give you access to a selection of South African parks, or a National Parks Pass, which will give you access to all South African national parks. Hong Kong Island, whose name the entire territory is derived from, is the main attraction for many visitors. The skyline of Hong Kong has been likened to a glittering bar chart, and is even more striking when viewed from the waters of Victoria Harbour. For the best views of Hong Kong, leave the island and head for the waterfront promenade of Kowloon across the harbour. Most of Hong Kong's urban development has taken place on reclaimed land in the north of the island, which is densely populated. This is the place the English Colonists chose to settle, so if you are interested in evidence of early colonial life, this is a good place to start. The Sundarbans is the largest contiguous mangrove forest in the world, covering 80 km (50 mi) of the coastline in Bangladesh and India. The Sundarbans are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The part which lies in India is called the Sundarbans National Park. But the forests are not just mangrove swamps: they are also home to what remains of the great jungles that once clothed the Ganges Plain. The Sundarbans has an area of 3,850 km2, of which about a third is covered by mangroves. The Sundarbans became a wildlife sanctuary in 1966, and is estimated to contain 400 Bengal tigers and 30,000 spotted deer. Buses depart from the inter-district bus station (on the other side of the river) throughout the day, though most (especially those to the east and to Jakar/Bumthang) leave between 06:30 and 07:30. Because the buses between districts are often full, it would be wise to purchase your ticket a few days in advance. Most areas are accessible by comfortable and sturdy Japanese mini-buses. Taxis are a quick and comfortable way to get to nearby locations such as Paro (150 Nu) and Punakha (200 Nu). The Oyapock River Bridge (Portuguese:Ponte sobre o Rio Oyapock) is a cable-stayed bridge that connects the Brazilian town of Oiapoque with Saint-Georges de l'Oyapock, French Guiana. Its two towers are 83 metres high, it is 378 metres long and has two lanes, each 3.5 metres wide. The vertical clearance under the bridge is 15 metres. The bridge was completed in August 2011, but opened to traffic only in March 2017. When the Brazilian customs checkpoints are completed, probably by September 2017, the bridge should be fully functional. The Guarani were the most important indigenous group in present-day eastern Paraguay. They were semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers and also practiced subsistence farming. Other indigenous groups, such as the Guaycuru and Payaguá, also lived in the Chaco region and relied on hunting, gathering, and fishing for their livelihoods. Paraguay, once called La Gran Provincia de las Indias, was established in the 16th century through the encounter between Spanish conquerors and indigenous groups. The Spanish began a three-century period of conquests. Since its founding in 1537, Paraguay has been able to preserve most of its indigenous identity and native features. Everyone knows that Argentina has one of the best polo players, and polo teams, in the world. Las Cañadas Polo Fields host the most important tournament of the year in December. There are also minor tournaments and matches at other times of the year. For information on tournaments and ticket purchases for polo matches, visit the Argentine Polo Association. The Falkland Islands have their own official currency, the Falkland Island pound (FKP), which is equivalent to the British pound sterling (GBP). The only bank on the islands, located in Stanley across from the FIC West store, offers currency exchange. British pounds are usually accepted everywhere in the islands. In Stanley, you can sometimes pay by credit card and US dollars. Credit cards may not be accepted in the outer islands, though U.S. and British money is easily exchanged. Check with your hosts in advance about an acceptable method of payment. It is next to impossible to change money in the Falklands outside of the islands, so be sure to change your money before departing. Since Montevideo is south of the equator, it is summer there when it is winter in the northern hemisphere and vice versa. Montevideo is subtropical, and in the summer months of December, January, and February it is not uncommon for temperatures to reach 90°F (32°C). Winter can be deceptively cold, with temperatures rarely below freezing, but the wind and humidity make it feel colder than it is. There is no such thing as a "dry season" or a "rainy season". The amount of rainfall remains more or less the same throughout the year. While most of the animals in the park are accustomed to seeing people, the wildlife there is still wild and should neither be fed nor bothered. Park officials recommend a minimum distance of 100 yards/meters from bears and wolves, and 25 yards/meters from all other wildlife. Regardless of how docile they may appear, bison, moose, deer, bears, and most other large animals can be dangerous. Every year, dozens of visitors are injured in encounters with these large, wild, and potentially dangerous animals. It is important to give these animals their space. Also, be aware that bears and other wildlife can be attracted to food with strong smells, so store and prepare food appropriately, and keep your campsite clean. Apia is the capital of Samoa. It is located on the island of Upolu and has an estimated population of 40,000. Apia was founded between 1850 and 1860, and has been the official capital of Samoa since 1959. This is the site of the infamous Naval Standoff of 1889, in which seven ships from Germany, the United States, and Great Britain refused to leave port. All ships except a British cruiser were sunk, and nearly 200 American and German lives were lost. Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III, the paramount chief, was killed during a peaceful demonstration by the pro-independence Mau movement. There are many beaches because Auckland is between two harbours. The most popular ones are in three areas. The Pacific Ocean beaches on the North Shore (part of North Harbour) run from Long Bay in the north to Devonport in the south. These are mainly sandy beaches, safe for swimming, and most are shaded by pohutukawa trees. The beaches of Tamaki Drive in Auckland Central, the sophisticated suburbs of Mission Bay and St Heliers overlook the Waitemata Harbour. These are family-friendly beaches that can get a bit crowded, but are safe for swimming. The local beer of choice is a simple, pleasant, and refreshing brew called "Number One". A second local beer is called "Manta". French wines are plentiful, but wines from Australia and New Zealand may be better suited to the journey. Tap water is safe to drink everywhere, but if you're squeamish, bottled water is easily available. According to the Australians, the "flat white" coffee was invented by a foreigner. An espresso is a short black coffee, a cappuccino is topped with milk (not foam), and tea is served without milk. Hot chocolate is as good as in Belgium. Fruit juices are expensive but good. Dive trips to the reef are common year-round, and injuries from diving on the reef are rare. Seek advice from local authorities, heed warnings, and pay particular attention to safety notices. From October to April, box jellyfish can be found along the beaches and in the rivers north of Seventeen Seventy. They are otherwise present only occasionally. Sharks do exist, but they rarely attack humans. Most sharks are scared of humans and would rather stay away. The saltwater crocodile's habitat is mostly in the rivers north of Rockhampton, and they are not active in the ocean. By booking in advance, a traveler can ensure that they have a place to stay when they arrive at their destination. Travel agencies often have agreements with certain hotels, but other types of lodging, such as hostels, can also be booked through them. Travel agencies usually offer a range of breakfast options, airport shuttles, or even flight + hotel packages. However, intoxication impairs judgment, and any good gambler will tell you how important it is to stay sober. Anyone traveling at high altitudes or in the mountains should be prepared for snow, ice, and temperatures near or below freezing. On icy or snow-covered roads, the friction is reduced and you can't drive as well as you could on a clean road. In a snowstorm, it can take only a few minutes for several inches of snow to fall. Rain, snow, sleet, or fog can also reduce visibility. However, ice and snow are normal in many countries, and traffic continues year-round. Safaris are probably the biggest tourist attraction in Africa and the focus of many a visitor's entire trip. In popular usage, the word safari refers to a land journey, often through wildlife-rich savannas, to see African big game. Some animals, like elephants and giraffes, approach the cars more closely, so regular binoculars will suffice. Lions, cheetahs, and leopards can sometimes be shy, so you're more likely to see them with binoculars. A walking safari, also called a bush walk, is an expedition that can last anywhere from a few hours to multiple days. The Paralympics will be held from 24 August to 5 September 2012, and some events will be held at other locations throughout Japan. Tokyo will be the only Asian city to have hosted both the summer and winter Olympics, having hosted the games in 1964. If your flight and/or hotel for 2020 had been booked prior to the postponement being announced, you may find yourself in a tough spot. Cancellation policies vary depending on the airline, but most coronavirus-related cancellation policies as of March 2020 were effective through July 2020, when the Olympics were scheduled. Tickets for most events will cost between ¥2,500 and ¥130,000, with regular tickets costing around ¥7,000. Hang wet clothes to dry. Many hotels provide an iron and board, even if they are not in the room. If you don't have a steam iron, or if you don't like ironing, you can try using a hair dryer. There are several ways to purify water and some methods are more effective against specific risks. In some areas, a minute of boiling makes the water safe to drink, while in others several minutes are required. Travelers can come into contact with animals that carry parasites not found in their home regions. Parasites can contaminate food, cause irritation or, at worst, allergic reactions, or transmit poison and infections. The same infectious diseases and dangerous animals that can kill or injure people by force are not usually considered dangerous animals. Duty Free shopping is a great opportunity to buy products that are exempt from taxes and duties in certain locations. The stretch of the Buffalo–Pittsburgh Turnpike between Point Marion and Fairmont is the most difficult to drive, as it often passes through isolated areas of vegetation. If you are not accustomed to driving on country roads, you should be careful, as steep hills, narrow roads, and sharp turns are prevalent. The speed limits on these roads are considerably lower than those on the approach and departure routes (usually 35-40 mph / 56-64 km/h). It is extremely important to strictly adhere to these speed limits. Strangely, however, cell phone coverage in this area is much higher than in other portions of the trail, such as the Pennsylvania Wilds. German sweets are quite nice and in Bavaria they are quite sweet and varied, similar to those of the neighboring Austria to the south. Traditional fruitcakes are a perennial favorite, from the ubiquitous apple varieties to seasonal cherry and plum cakes. German baked goods often contain nuts, such as almonds and hazelnuts, or stone fruit, such as peaches and plums. Popular cakes are often enjoyed with a strong cup of coffee. For a sweet treat try some of the local cakes, which vary by region and are variously called Berliner, Pfannkuchen or Krapfen. Curry is a dish whose flavour is achieved by the blending of herbs and spices with meat or vegetables. Curry can be either "dry" or "wet" depending on the amount of liquid in the dish. In northern India and Pakistan, inland regions use yogurt as a base for curry, while in southern India and some coastal regions of the subcontinent coconut milk is more common. With 17,000 islands to choose from, Indonesian cuisine is a broad term that encompasses the many regional cuisines found throughout the country. However, when used without further qualification, the word usually refers to food from central and eastern Java, the island's main island. Indonesian cuisine, now ubiquitous throughout the archipelago, offers a number of simple dishes whose flavours are dominated by peanuts, chilli, sugar (especially coconut sugar), and various aromatic spices. Stirrups are leather straps that go under the rider's boots and are attached to the sides of the saddle. They give the rider more stability but can be a safety issue in case the rider's feet get caught in them. If a rider is thrown from a horse but a leg is trapped in the stirrup, the horse could drag the rider off. There are some safety measures that can be taken to reduce this risk. For one thing, most riders wear boots with a heel and a fairly thin, smooth sole. Some saddles, especially English saddles, have added safety bars, which prevent the leather from coming out of the saddle when the rider is jerked backward in a fall. Cochamó Valley: the most important rock climbing destination in Chile, and is often referred to as the "Yosemite of South America" due to the many huge granite walls and cliffs. The peaks are rugged, and the views from them are spectacular. Climbers from all over the world continue to explore and establish new routes on the cliffs, and the possibilities are endless. Snowboarding and skiing are popular winter sports which involve going down a snow-covered hill on a snowboard or skis. Skiing is one of the main tourist activities, and has many enthusiasts, sometimes called "ski bums" who devote entire vacations to skiing in a particular ski area. The origins of skiing as a sport are very old. The earliest known rock carvings of people skiing date from about 5000 BCE! Skiing as a sport has its origins at least in the 17th century; in 1861, the first recreational ski club was opened in Australia by Norwegians. Backcountry skiing, also known as off-piste or backcountry skiing or ski touring. It is related to, though usually distinguished from, ski touring and ski mountaineering, which are done in steep terrain and require stiffer skis and boots. Think of the ski track as a path similar to a hiking trail. If conditions are good, you can cover more distance than on foot, but seldom as fast as a skier with a heavy pack on a trailed route. Europe is a small continent geographically, but it is comprised of many independent countries. Normally, when traveling through multiple countries, you would need a visa and your passport would be stamped multiple times. However, regarding this aspect, the Schengen area is more like a single country. If you remain in this area, you will usually be able to travel from one country to another without passing through immigration checkpoints. Also, if you already have a Schengen visa, there is no need to apply for a separate visa for each of the Schengen countries, which would save your time, money, and hassle. There is no universally accepted definition of what makes an object an antique. Some tax authorities consider an object to be antique if it is at least 100 years old. The age at which this happens varies geographically, and may be lower in one part of the world than another, such as in North America versus Europe. Crafts objects might be antique by this definition, even though they are more recent than similar items made in quantity. Reindeer herding is an important source of livelihood for the Sami people, and the culture surrounding this trade is also the basis for many other professions. Although widely used, especially by non-Roma, the word "gipsy" is often considered pejorative because of its association with negative stereotypes and misconceptions about the Roma. You may also want to consider the opinions of foreign governments, but always remember that those opinions are aimed at their citizens, not you. A "hazardous weather condition" is any event that produces a significant threat to life and property. All parts of the world experience extreme weather, and there are many types of extreme weather, depending on geography, topography, and atmospheric conditions. Heavy winds, hail, excessive precipitation, and wildfire are all signs and symptoms of adverse weather conditions, just as tornadoes, waterspouts, and cyclones. Regional and seasonal severe weather phenomena include tornadoes, blizzards, ice storms, and sand storms. Travelers would do well to check the forecast for severe weather in their area as it could affect their travel plans. Anyone planning to visit a country that is actually at war, or where war is a real possibility, would be well-advised to have some professional training. A normal course is 2 to 5 days long, and includes role-playing and many first aid and weapons training exercises. Many books and magazines are available on the subject of survival in the wilderness, but few deal with the subject of survival in a war zone. Travellers heading overseas for gender reassignment surgery should ensure they have valid travel documents for their return journey. Governments' intentions regarding the issue of sex-neutral passports, or updated documents to reflect a desired name and/or gender are mixed. The availability of foreign governments to accept such documents is also variable. Security inspections have become much more thorough since the aftermath of 9/11. Individuals who are transgender and in the pre-operative phase should not expect to go through the screening process without their privacy and dignity being compromised. Tide pools are pockets of seawater left behind when the tide recedes, and are often found next to coral reefs or similar formations. Because of the undersea topography, the return flow concentrates in some deep sections and can become strong enough to flow out to the open sea. Most deaths occur from drowning while trying to swim against the current. Once out of the current, swimming back to shore should be no more difficult than normal. Try to find a place where you won't get trapped again, or consider waiting for help if you have the skills and it's been spotted. The re-entry shock is shorter than the cultural shock (the "honeymoon" phase is shorter), lasts longer, and can be more serious. Individuals who have an easy time adjusting to a new culture may have a hard time readjusting to their home culture. When you return to your home country after living abroad, you would have become accustomed to the local culture and would have lost some of your original culture. In your first experience of a foreign country, you are likely to meet people who are patient and understanding, knowing that visitors to a new country need time to adjust. Many people could not have imagined that patience and understanding would also be necessary for those who returned to their homeland. The Pyramid of Sound and Light is the most interesting thing for children in this area. Before the show starts, you will be able to see the pyramids in total darkness and silence. There's always the sound of tourists and shoppers, and it's quite a show. It's like a storybook. The Sphinx becomes the background and the narrator of a long story. The scenes are projected onto the pyramids and each pyramid is illuminated. With the most bases of any country, the South Shetland Islands were discovered in 1819 and have sixteen active bases in 2020. The archipelago is 120 km (75 miles) north of the peninsula. King George Island is the largest island and home to the town of Villa Las Estrellas. Other islands include Livingston Island and Deception Island, where an active volcano's caldera has filled with water, creating a magnificent natural harbour. Ellsworth Land is the region south of the peninsula and west of the Bellingshausen Sea. Here the peninsula's mountains meet the plateau, re-emerging as the Ellsworth Range, a 360 km (225 mile) long chain that is bisected by the Minnesota Glacier. The northern part, called the Sentinel Range, contains the highest mountains in Antarctica, including Vinson Massif, 4,892 m high at Mount Vinson. In remote areas without cell phone coverage, a satellite phone may be the only option. A satellite phone is not a substitute for a cell phone, because you have to be out in the open with a clear view of the sky to make a call. The service is often used by recreational boaters, fishermen, and those on offshore expeditions who need remote data and voice. Your local phone service provider should be able to provide you with information on how to connect to this service. One of the most popular options for those taking a gap year is to travel and learn a new skill. It is particularly common among school-leavers, since they can take a gap year before going to university without jeopardising their education. In many cases, going to study abroad for your gap year can actually increase your chances of continuing higher education when you return to your home country. Participation in these educational programs usually requires payment of a fee. Finland is an ideal destination for those who love to navigate. In the "Land of a Thousand Lakes" there are also thousands of islands, both inland and along the coast. You don't need a yacht for island hopping and lake cruising. Although the coastal islands and inland lakes are large enough to accommodate any size yacht, smaller boats or even kayaks offer a different experience. Finland's national pastime is boating, with a boat for every seven or eight people. Most of the Baltic cruises call at Saint Petersburg, Russia for several days. This means that you could spend a full two days exploring the historic town, returning to the ship for sleeping at night. No separate visa is required for disembarking for a shore excursion (effective from 2009). Some brochures also offer cruises to Berlin, Germany. As the map above shows, Berlin is not by the sea, and a visit to the city is not included in the cruise price. Flying can be frightening for people of all ages and conditions, but especially those who have never flown before or have had a traumatic experience. The capital of Moldova is Chisinau, and the local language is Romanian, but Russian is also widely spoken. Moldova is a multi-ethnic republic that was once the site of an ethnic conflict. In 1994, the conflict gave rise to the Transnistrian "Republic" in the east of Moldova, with its own government and currency, but not recognized by any UN member state. Despite the failure of the political negotiations, economic relations between these two parts of Moldova have been restored. The main religion in Moldova is Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Izmir is Turkey's third-largest city with an estimated population of 3.7 million, after Istanbul and Ankara, and the country's second-largest port after Istanbul. The ancient city of Smyrna is located on a large bay, surrounded by mountains, and is now a modern, active, and developed commercial center. While the city has a distinctly Mediterranean feel to it rather than a Turkish one, its wide avenues, glass-fronted buildings, and modern shopping malls are punctuated by the ubiquitous red tiled roofs, 18th-century market, old mosques and churches. The village of Haldarsvik offers beautiful views of the neighboring island of Eysturoy and a unique octagonal church. There are some interesting marble sculptures of doves on some tombs in the churchyard. A half-hour stroll around the charming village is enough to see the sights. North of Lisbon is the romantic and enchanting town of Sintra, easily reached for a day trip. It is famous among foreigners thanks to Lord Byron's poetic account of its beauties. Scotturb bus line 403 regularly connects Sintra with Cabo da Roca. Still to the north, visit the great Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima (pilgrimage site), one of the most famous Marian pilgrimage sites in the world. Remember, more than anything else, the site you are visiting is a cesspool, and has little or no meaning to most of the world's population. There are still many survivors of these places, both Jews and non-Jews, who saw their family members murdered or worked to death. Treat it with all the dignity, seriousness, and respect it deserves. Avoid jokes about the Holocaust or the Nazis. Do not deface these places with tags or graffiti. In the city of Barcelona, Catalan and Spanish are the official languages. Approximately half of the population prefers to speak Catalan, and most are able to understand it; Spanish is known by virtually all. However, most signs are written in Catalan, which is the official first language. Spanish is also widely used in public transportation and other services. Normal announcements on the metro are in Catalan only. Unscheduled service disruptions are announced in several languages, including Spanish, English, French, Arabic and Japanese, on an automated system. Parisians have a reputation for being egocentric, boastful, and proud. Even though you will often find yourself conforming to a stereotype, the best way to feel comfortable in Paris is to be as polite and well mannered as possible, and this will certainly help you along in your travels. Parisians may seem a bit rough around the edges, but they'll warm up to you quickly if you show some basic manners. The Plitvice Lakes National Park has a rich variety of forests, mainly beech, oak, and spruce, with a mix of alpine and Mediterranean vegetation. With multiple microclimates, soils, and elevations, it has a great variety of vegetation. The area is also home to an astounding array of animal and bird life. These areas are home to rare species such as the brown bear, wolf, eagle, lynx, wild cat and capercaillie, as well as other more common animal species. When visiting a monastery, women should have their legs and shoulders covered. Most monasteries will provide robes for women who arrive unprepared, but if you have your own, especially if they are brightly colored, you are likely to get a smile from the monk or nun on duty at the entrance. Similarly, men are required to wear trousers that come all the way down to their ankles. These can also be rented from the shop at the entrance, but clothing is not washed after every use, so you may not feel comfortable in these garments. For men, a one-size-fits-all! Majorcan cuisine, like similar ones in the Mediterranean, is based on bread, vegetables, and pork (especially pork), and uses olive oil everywhere. Pa amb Oli is a popular simple summer meal: bread with olive oil, tomatoes, and all the trimmings, such as cheese, tuna, etc. All nouns, including the formal pronoun "Sie" (meaning "she" or "her"), begin with a capital letter, even when they occur in the middle of a sentence. This is an important means of distinguishing certain verbs and complements. This probably also makes it easier to read, though the need to understand whether a verb or an adjective is being used in its nominal form makes the writing a bit complicated. Italian:The Italian pronunciation is relatively easy because most words are pronounced exactly as they are spelled. The main letters to watch out for are C and G, because their pronunciation depends on the vowel that follows. Also, make sure to pronounce "r" and "rr" differently: caro means dear, while carro means car. Persian has a relatively regular and easy-to-learn grammar. Therefore, this basic Persian grammar guide will help you a lot with Persian grammar and sentence structure. Of course, if you already know a Romance language, learning Portuguese will be easier. However, those with a limited knowledge of Spanish may come to the erroneous conclusion that Portuguese is similar enough to not warrant separate study. By today's standards, premodern observatories are usually obsolete, and are either museums or educational sites. Plants do best when they are left alone in their natural habitat, so resist the temptation to pick just one example. Should you find yourself in an Italian garden, even picking some of the plants will cost you your life. Singapore is generally a safe and easy city to get around, and most things can be bought once you arrive. But it's in the "high tropics," just a few degrees north of the equator, so expect it to be hot (always) and sunny (often, when it's not raining). Some buses also go north to Hebron, the traditional burial place of the Biblical patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and their wives. Make sure the bus you want to take goes into Hebron and does not stop at the nearby Jewish settlement of Kiryat Arba. Inland waterways can be a great theme for a vacation. For example, you can visit the castles of the Loire and Rhine valleys, take a cruise along the interesting cities of the Danube, or sail the Erie Canal. They also mark popular hiking and biking trails. Christmas is one of the most important holidays in Christianity and celebrates the birth of Jesus. Most of the traditions associated with this holiday have been adopted by non-Christian countries around the world, as well as by agnostics and atheists in Christian countries. Traditionally, people would spend the night of Easter Eve outdoors, in order to watch the sunrise. There are, of course, Christian theological explanations for this tradition, but it could easily be a pagan fertility rite from before the Christian era. Traditional churches often have an Easter Vigil on the Saturday night of Easter weekend, with the service starting at midnight to celebrate the resurrection of Christ. All the animals that originally came to the islands came either by swimming, flying, or floating in. Because the distance from the mainland was so great, mammals were unable to travel there, so the Giant Tortoise became the main herbivore in the Galapagos.
