DISEASE: WHEAT BLAST (Gomer Blast Rog) Causal agent: Fungal disease (fungus) BACKGROUND - Wheat blast is a destructive fungal disease of wheat - Infection occurs when relatively warm and humid weather prevails from heading to flowering stage - First identified in Brazil in 1985, later spread to Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, and other South American countries - First appeared in Bangladesh in mid-February 2016, affecting about 15,000 hectares in Jashore, Kushtia, Meherpur, Jhenaidah, Chuadanga, Barisal, and Bhola districts - Infected fields can suffer 25-30% yield loss; in severe cases, entire fields can be destroyed - In the 2016-17 season, sporadic outbreaks were seen in Jashore, Meherpur, Magura, Jhenaidah, Chuadanga, Kushtia, and Faridpur, but infection was limited to 5-10% due to timely management SYMPTOMS - Wheat spikes (heads) turn white at the point of infection and spread quickly across the field under favorable weather - The fungus mainly attacks the wheat spike (head) - Blackish-grey spots appear at the point of infection on the spike, with the upper portion turning white - If infection occurs at the base of the spike, the entire spike dries up and turns white - Grains in infected spikes become shriveled and discolored - Leaves can also be infected, showing small, water-soaked, eye-shaped grey spots HOW THE DISEASE SPREADS - Spreads through infected/contaminated seeds - Infection occurs when spikes remain wet for 12-24 hours (from rain or high humidity) combined with temperatures of 18-25°C; spores then spread rapidly through the air - The fungus can survive on certain grassy weed hosts (e.g., Chapra grass, paddy grass, Angali grass) PREVENTION AND CONTROL - Collect seeds only from fields free of blast infection - Grow blast-tolerant varieties (BARI Gom 28, BARI Gom 30, BARI Gom 32) or the resistant variety (BARI Gom 33) - Sow seeds at the appropriate time — between November 15-30 (1st to 15th of Agrahayan) — to avoid rain and high temperatures during heading - Before sowing, treat seeds with a fungicide: mix 3 grams of Provax 200 WP (Carbendazim 37.5% + Thiram 37.5%) or 3 ml of Vitavax 200 FF (Carbendazim 17.5% + Thiram 17.5%) per kg of seed. Seed treatment also controls other seed-borne diseases and improves yield.
