# Critical review, sixth pass: the beta-1 sign-off The same deliberately harsh but impartial reviewer, sixth visit, here to judge whether this is actually beta-1. `REVIEW.md` (6), `REVIEW2` (7), `REVIEW3` (7.5), `REVIEW4` (8), `REVIEW5` (8.5) are the record. Since the fifth pass the deltas are polish, not systems: the last hardcoded English strings got localized, per-arc audio got verified and guarded with tests, and settings now ride in the save. The question at a gate is not "did the game get deeper" (it didn't, in one patch) but "is this a build you would put in strangers' hands and call it beta." It is. **Verdict: 8.5/10, held, and beta-ready.** Nothing since REVIEW5 moved the score, and honestly nothing since REVIEW5 was *trying* to. What it was trying to do, finish the localization to the edges, verify the audio, make the setup portable, it did, cleanly and with tests. This is the least broken this game has ever been. The reasons it is 8.5 and not higher are the same two it has been for two reviews: three arcs, and depth that hides behind a first win. Neither is a beta blocker. ## What actually got tightened (credit for a polish pass done right) - **Localization is now complete to the corners.** The "furthest" HUD marker, the hesitation lines, the alternate-ending button, and the icon-only aria-labels were the last English leaks in an otherwise eight-language game; they are gone, translated, and now guarded by the catalog-completeness test. For a game whose whole distribution thesis is "plays in eight languages", closing these is not cosmetic, it is finishing the job you said you were doing. - **The audio claim is now testable, not just asserted.** A per-arc guard proves every skin has its own builder and is routed, so a fourth arc cannot ship mute. That is the right kind of test: it defends an invariant a reviewer would otherwise have to re-check by ear every release. - **Settings travel with the save.** Small, correct, and it closes the obvious "I set it up on my phone and lost it on my laptop" gap. Good hygiene. - **Discipline held under a polish pass.** No regressions, the suite grew to cover the new surface, i18n gaps are zero. The process is clearly working. ## What is unchanged, and still true at the gate ### 1. Three arcs. Sixth review. This is now the defining limitation. Every pass I have said it and it is more true each time: the systems keep getting finished to a shine around the *same three places*. Beta-1 is a real milestone and it is a milestone for a game with roughly twenty minutes of distinct content. The single most valuable thing after this tag is a fourth arc, and it is not close. ### 2. The best mechanic is still behind a win. Hard mode remains the deepening, and remains hidden until the first escape. Fine for beta; first thing to revisit for 1.0. ### 3. The surface is large and the loop is small. Sharing, a 20-badge board, a codex, records, promo codes, a full settings panel, save-load, three difficulties, two reading registers. It is all defensible and it is a lot of frame for a two-minute picture. The polish pass added more frame (settings-in-save, more locale strings) and no picture. Watch the ratio. ### 4. Two things a stranger still trips on (carried from the cold read). The promo box still advertises a shop that is barely stocked, and the deep reset is still uncushioned. Neither blocks beta; both are on the 1.0 list. ## Gate verdict This is a legitimate beta-1: complete in eight languages to the edges, verified end to end, tested, and free of the "feels broken" traps the early reviews flagged. It is shippable to real players who will have a clean, if short, experience. Tag it. Then stop finishing the frame and paint a fourth picture. ## Pull quote > Beta-1 is the least broken this game has ever been and exactly as small as it > was two reviews ago. You finished the localization, verified the sound, and made > the save portable, all correctly. Now there is nothing left to polish that > matters more than the thing you keep not building: a fourth place to be.
